February 12th is the Primary Election Voter Registration Deadline: Applicants who register in-person in the Circuit Clerk’s office on that day and those who mail registration applications postmarked no later than February 12th are eligible to vote in the March 12, 2024 Primary Elections. If you want to have a say in who is nominated by ONE party or THE OTHER for president, or the 4 House of Representatives seats or Senator Rodger Wicker’s Senate seat you have less than a week to get registered. https://www.sos.ms.gov/index.php/elections-voting/voter-registration-information

On Thursday, February 8, the United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case of Trump vs. Anderson. Former President Trump and his attorneys are challenging a Colorado Supreme Court ruling that prevents his name from appearing on the ballot in that state.

The arguments themselves are expected to be one-hour in length. Attorneys for each side receive 30 minutes to make their case and answer questions from the Justices. We do not how exactly how long the Special Coverage will last - it depends on the precise start and end time of the court session itself, followed by analysis.

In Legal Terms: Property Distribution Jan 23, 2024
    Show notes

Laws are not the same from place to place in America. What might be legal in Louisiana or California isn’t necessarily the law here in Mississippi. Let’s learn about some of those differences today with our guest Professor Cal Peeler a guest professor at Ole Miss Law School. https://law.olemiss.edu/faculty-directory/calvin-peeler/

What courts handle the distribution of property in a divorce?

Chancery Courts have jurisdiction over disputes in matters involving equity; domestic matters including adoptions, custody disputes and divorces; guardianships; sanity hearings; wills; and challenges to constitutionality of state laws. Land records are filed in Chancery Court.

We’ve talked about domestic law a few times here on In Legal Terms. Most recently August 22nd of 2023 our guest was Chancery Court Judge Troy Odum and Child Support

Is internet gambling legal? No. Internet gambling is illegal under state law. Online sites may advertise they are “legal” and “licensed” forms of gaming. They may be legal or licensed where the bets are received, but it is illegal to place bets from Mississippi with these businesses.

Do you know what all sports you can bet on? Some are:

    • In Yacht Racing, the International Sailing Federation sanctioned events
    • The Olympics - Approved List to be sent from MS Gaming Commission
    • Japan Nippon Professional Baseball and Korean Baseball League

    https://www.msgamingcommission.com/images/uploads/MGC_Approved_Sports_Wagering_Catalog.pdf

The MS Gaming Commission has a form:

“REQUEST TO OFFER WAGERS ON EVENT OTHER THAN A HORSE RACE, GREYHOUND RACE, OR ATHLETIC SPORTING EVENT “

What would you like to bet on? I wonder what has been approved and what’s been disallowed!
