In Legal Terms: In the News 2026 Sep 10, 2026
    Show notes

We like to schedule an “In the News” episode every so often so Liz can get her questions answered. Have you listened to the news or read a phrase and wondered – “what’s that about”? Liz will get her questions answered and so will listeners from our guest: attorney Francis Springer from Springer Law Firm.

Do you think it’s too early to start thinking about the next election? Voting starts in eleven days. Absentee voting begins Monday, September 21st. Monday, October 5th is the voter registration deadline. Absentee ballots that are returned by mail must be postmarked on or before election day: November 3rd 2026.

According to NPR as heard on our station this morning:

At the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, President Trump made a stunning and implausible pledge: to send every American adult a $5,000 cash dividend. But only if his party maintains control of the House and the Senate in November's midterms. . . .

Quick math puts the bill for this proposed "dividend" at more than $1 trillion. Plus, it's illegal to pay or be paid to influence voting.

Francis was an inspiration for a segment of our show! One day on social media, Francis mentioned: the Posse Commitatus Act. Liz had no idea what that was. No clue. So, we started: Legal Terms on In Legal Terms. And we made a little YouTube short when Francis was on the show when we talked about “what’s in the news” That is the most watched short video on MPB’s YouTube Channel.

Today’s guest, Martin Edward, doesn’t just know about firearms law. In Legal Terms: Legal Protests Aug 06, 2026
    Show notes

We treasure our right to protest, but where is the line between protest and harassment? When does your right to speak your mind turn into a criminal offence? We’ll learn with Joshua Tom, Legal Director, ACLU of Mississippi.

    • Today’s Legal Terms on In Legal Terms are: First Amendment, Public Forum, Time, Place, and Manner Restrictions
    • ACLU.org has a Know your rights: protesters rights page. There’s a PDF for organizing a protest or attending one. There’s information about taking pictures or videos, sharing information on social media, and if you get stopped by the police while protesting.
    • I love our show because we try to stay topical. I’ve come across two news articles with information about cars - that In Legal Terms has already covered. I read about a theft of two guns from an unlocked vehicle in the Tupelo area. If you listened to our show about Gun Rights, you would have known what a problem that is. I’ve also come across a notification about the Touch Law – 30 states now have laws against touching your phone while you drive – these 30 states include Alabama, Tennessee, and Louisiana. But if you were an In Legal Terms listener you already knew about this law.
