    Alice at 100 Jan 06, 2022
    Show notes

My friend Kevin asked me to fly with him to Montgomery to record hours of interviews with his 100 year old grandmother, Alice Cumbus. We watched Bama Football together. We went to church (and I did not burst into flames). We talked for hours. Two years later, at age 102, Alice died. Kevin can’t think about that day without tearing up. This interview was the beginning of a whole new adventure for me: VoiceLocket.com Take a look!

War Bride: Betty McKemie Dec 30, 2021
    Show notes

Betty McKemie didn’t get to see the Statue of Liberty when she sailed into NYC. She’d rushed below to pack. They’d called her name over the ship’s loudspeaker. Her new husband was on shore waiting for her with open arms. They’d move from her native London to a very different place: Albany, Georgia.

Bunny Hop at the Lunatic Asylum: Helen Brett Schmid Dec 23, 2021
    Show notes

I didn’t meet my birth mother until I was a middle aged man. It took quite a bit of investigative experience to find her. She welcomed me with open arms. She’d hug on me and talk to me endlessly and she’d cook for me. This year she died. I miss you, my mother. Thank God you let me record your voice telling me how you met my father. Crazy story.

Tammy talks to Stuart about the desperate need for reform in the realm of treatment shortly after the announcement of more than 100,000 drug overdose deaths in a single year in the U.S. Her answers are not simple but they could save many thousands of lives.

Joan is not alone Nov 25, 2021
    Show notes

Joan lives with a couple of cats (indoors) but then there are the neighborhood squirrels and dogs and deer (who have been known to eat out of her hand). The eldest of 13 (THIRTEEN!) was valedictorian of her high school class before heading off to Notre Dame. Listen as two very different people talk about religion and politics without arguing once. There’s a lot to Joan Coggin I never knew! Bout time I just listened.

"Queen Anne" holds court Nov 18, 2021
    Show notes

Anne Churchwell Stokes never knew her mother. Adopted as an infant she became the heir to a chain of small department stores in Georgia and Florida. Learning the business at her father’s side, she travelled with him to New York, Paris, and Cuba! She also learned a keen sense of civic obligation in a town plagued by poverty, my home town of Albany, GA. The mom to two gay sons speaks directly to evolving views of LGBTQ people in the deep south.

Nancy birthed her 10 lb. son at age 47 with 0 painkillers Nov 11, 2021
    Show notes

Nancy Jones didn’t want to watch massive social change pass by as a spectator. She joined The Movement. From civil rights to the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) to The Great Speckled Bird underground newspaper in Atlanta and then on to The Farm - a commune in middle Tennessee - Nancy has seen a lot and she remembers it all. And oh BTW she gave birth to three kids - the last of whom was a whopping ten pounder she delivered in a tent with all natural methods - NOTHING for the pain! YIKES!

Mimi: Recovery from Opioid Addiction Nov 04, 2021
    Show notes

Mimi broke the law while working at a law office, using clip art to forge prescriptions for opioids.
Once upon a time she stood in line at a methadone clinic while visibly pregnant. Her husband took her to rehab and began crying. “What the f@&! are you crying about?” she demanded, livid at the circumstances she had created.
Nine years later she is a decent wife and mother - and works at a drug treatment center. In the middle of an epidemic of opioid overdoses and deaths, she wants other addicts to know a new life is possible…with help.
