Jeanne Hall boarded the plane with MLK when someone said, "BOMB!" Mar 17, 2022
    Show notes

Jeanne Hall grew up in my hometown of Albany, Georgia. She was almost 18 when an “outside agitator” named Martin Luther King, Jr. launched the small southern town into the nation’s headlines with his non-violent protests. Our conversation takes any number of fascinating twists and turns from Ray Charles and “genteel racism” to NYC theater to Stella Adler and Judy Garland and NBC’s Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson (also first person experiences) and on to her triumphant book A LEGACY OF LIES. (This episode may be Producer Liz’s favorite of our first 115.) TRIGGER WARNING: CANDID DISCUSSION OF SEXUAL ABUSE.

Tara Brown needed faith when her mom was shot Mar 03, 2022
    Show notes

Tara Brown can laugh about it now. The “Godmother of QC Comedy” is a “family friendly” standup comic after all. But when her mom was hit by a stray bullet in NYC, she was not laughing. She was praying. How Tara learned to lean into her faith just when she needed it most.

    Bee's Truth at 17 Feb 24, 2022
    Show notes

There’s that lyric from the Janis Ian song “I learned the truth at 17.” Little bit of angsty teen drama. That is NOT Bee the intern at age 17. She is remarkably dialed in and self assured so we wade right into the heavy stuff - her open adoption, feminist and lesbian views, ADHD, anxiety, a great relationship with ALL FOUR PARENTS (bio + adopted), all that plus Jesus’ personality and learning to speak up for herself. Wisdom way beyond her years. That’s Bee!

Why are women better listeners? Jan 27, 2022
    Show notes

Stuart gets interviewed by a class at the historically all-women Hollins University in Virginia. Here’s the deal: BOTH women and men typically acknowledge that women are better listeners than men. The big questions this class addresses: why? And what if anything is changing for the better? Jointly recorded with Emma Thomas (she/her), Keegan Clark (she/her) and Mars Titus (they/them) for their podcast LISTENING FOR LIFE as a part of Professor Heather Toro Derrick’s class LISTENING IN THE MODERN WORLD. Their episodes drop next month. This episode in their podcast will be #5: “Gendered Socialization and Listening.”

Lily from Jersey, Age 9 Jan 20, 2022
    Show notes

I have three daughters and only one son. So I know girls need to be heard as well as women. And I know I don’t do the best job of listening to my own daughters, now very capable young women all. So I practiced listening to my niece Lily at age 9. I discovered she could hold her own in a conversation of more than an hour. It was really quite remarkable. We talked about her mom’s profession with the NJ state police and her dad’s work as a marine biologist. And we see how Lily came to connect with animals including blue crabs!

Aunt Lucy Jane Jan 13, 2022
    Show notes

My kids would call some of the things my Aunt says #CRINGE. My 24 year old son would call it a #HotTake to say the least. I just say she’s from a completely different place and time. Specifically, Anniston, Alabama and the first half of the 20th century. So when I ask her about the Freedom Riders bus burning, look out. I’m more interested in understanding her life and times, than I am calling her out. Listening is about hearing hard things.
