Mark Klein: Connecting the Pieces in the Export World Apr 06, 2021

“It’s a really, really, really big world out there and there are a lot of customers in it.” That is among the parting shots during an engaging conversation with Mark Klein, regional director for the Export-Import Bank of the United States. Klein adds that companies, no matter their size or product line, should not be afraid to ask for help. While exporting may not be for everyone, there are more than a few businesses that would no longer be in business without the international customers. EXIM is the official export credit agency of the U.S., supplementing financing that is already out there. Through a pre-export solution to export credit insurance and foreign buyer financing, EXIM reduces risk and provides the guarantees that help keep the export chain well-oiled. Klein has 20-plus years of experience in Indiana in the banking and EXIM worlds.

Katie Jenner: Education Passion 24 Hours a Day Mar 23, 2021

Indiana’s first Secretary of Education makes it immediately clear that she is passionate about her profession. “I go to bed thinking about it. I wake up thinking about it. And sometimes, in the middle of the night, I wake up thinking about it.” Jenner outlines her experiences – both in the classroom and with community partners in administrative roles – her relationship with Gov. Eric Holcomb (her current and former boss) and the priorities she is hearing about on a current listening tour. She says there is no room for the finger pointing between K-12 education and business that took place at one point in time. Similarly, the government silos must, once and for all, be broken down. Partnerships are one of the keys – as long as they ultimately benefit students.

Phil and Brittany Moser: Fulfilling a Legacy Mar 09, 2021

Brittany Moser lived her life to the fullest before it was cut short by disease at age 32. Her father, Phil, a Steuben County resident his entire life, was along for many precious moments as his daughter’s best friend. Not only did Phil (and family/friends) complete the list of Colorado outdoor adventures that he/Brittany had begun, but he is determined to honor her in a special way. Since Brittany had majored in film production at Ball State University and dreamed of entering the movie business in California, he is working with producers in an effort to turn his book – Free and Fearless: The Amazing Impact of One Precious Life – into a movie. Phil shares his “connection” with Brittany: “What we had was special. In the toughest moments of life, that is what will carry you through.’ Brittany was grateful for the support she received from her parents. Today, Phil is grateful for the opportunity to carry on her story.

Brock Hesler: Listening … and Reacting Feb 09, 2021

From previous career roles at United Way and in health care, Brock Hesler has always been in a position to help others. That has continued during his nearly seven years at the Indiana Chamber. The game plan: Listen to current and prospective members, target the two or three ways the Chamber can best assist them and spring into action. It’s a strategy that works well, whether in “normal” times or the unprecedented circumstances of 2020. The end result is a strong partnership. Hesler says he has learned about the resiliency of the Indiana business community. That will be crucial as the Chamber and its Foundation help lead the state’s economic recovery. Boone County business success and Butler (basketball and more) are part of the discussion.

    Tyler Ludlow: ‘I Have to Make a Decision …’ Jan 26, 2021

The phrase above is how many people look at the process of making a choice. Tyler Ludlow, founder and chief decision scientist at the Decision Skills Institute, says his role is to help turn decisions from “burdens into opportunities for growth.” It’s big for businesses – Ludlow applied his trade at Unilever and Eli Lilly – and individuals. Ludlow notes that it’s also important to decouple the decision process from the outcome, in which many things are out of the decision-maker’s control. We talk about heredity vs. environment in decision making, geographic factors and more. Plus, learn from Ludlow’s own real-life example in a family dilemma that featured important decision concepts and applications. And experience it for yourself by participating in a free virtual challenge.

Steve Down: ‘Normalizing’ in a Year That Was Anything But Jan 12, 2021

Steve Down, president of Herff Jones, says he can’t imagine a business more centered on high school and colleges being open and operating as normal than his organization. But when a pandemic hits, memorializing and commemorating a school year only grow in importance. Innovation took over, with creative solutions to completing yearbooks, virtual book signings, delivery of various items and virtual graduation ceremonies – nearly 1,000 serving 250,000 students. The innovation is here to stay in the now 101-year-old business. Lydia Tremaine: Talent Shines Through in So Many Ways Dec 22, 2020

Call it an unbeatable combination. Trine University student Lydia Tremaine, 2018 Miss Indiana, won the 2019 Miss America talent competition singing Frank Sinatra’s My Life. Especially resonating with her is the lyric: “Each time you find yourself flat on your face, you pick yourself up and get back in the race.” A few minutes later, in describing the takeaways from her year on the road as the titleholder, she quotes the series finale of The Office: “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.” There are many more good days for the talented Tremaine, who talks about her own mental health struggles, the magic of music, lessons she has learned/shared and much more.

DuJuan McCoy: Going “full-tilt boogie” all the way Dec 08, 2020

That headline is a self-description for DuJuan McCoy, an Indianapolis native and owner of Circle City Broadcasting (WISH-TV and MyINDY-TV 23). He has been the standard bearer for Black ownership in the television industry. Although progress has been slower than we would prefer, he sees that evolving and progress being made. McCoy’s recent announcement of the new Multicultural News Network can ultimately shine the national and global spotlight on Indiana. He says, “I think things are syncing for change to come to America.” And if “full-tilt boogie” doesn’t grab your attention, how about another comparison when asked about down time and hobbies: “I’m like an ATM machine – never closed and easily accessible.”

Fort Wayne: PNC Community of the Year Nov 24, 2020

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry admits that for many years the three rivers flowing through the city were considered “enemies”. Now, after nearly two decades of transformation, they are embraced for a variety of recreational opportunities. Downtown has experienced a similar revival, with the Parkview Field minor league baseball stadium serving as a catalyst. Henry says people are living, working and playing downtown – which helps attract both businesses and talented individuals. The mayor, in his fourth term, talks about his stops in the private sector, other influences on his career and what he enjoys most about his current role.

Brad Bostic: Indiana Wesleyan University Dynamic Leader of the Year Nov 20, 2020

For Brad Bostic, it’s personal. In the early 2000s, he saw his mother suffer from colon cancer. And while the medical professionals worked diligently to help her, the silos and systems in place were frustrating. Bostic wants efficient, effective and personalized health care for all. His company, hc1, strives to help make that happen through accumulating and analyzing lab test data. It has 23 billion (and counting each day) results in its system. It has pioneered precision health insight networks – and Bostic won’t rest until he’s confident “all steps are being taken to give us the best possible chance for a healthy life.”

Dr. Kristina Box: Bayh-Lugar Government Leader of the Year Nov 16, 2020

The spotlight has shined brightly on Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box. She would prefer being behind the scenes working with her team and digging into the numbers but accepts the upfront role as part of dealing with COVID-19. The “overwhelming negative response to being asked to wear masks” has been surprising, she says, and the uncertainty – “the only guarantee with this pandemic is it’s going to change” – has been challenging. She talks about the team effort, the early influence that led her to a medical career and areas of progress in other important areas of health care.

Dave Ricks came to Indiana twice for family – undergraduate studies at Purdue (a tradition on his father’s side) and graduate work at Indiana University (following his now wife of 24 years). He stayed the second time, beginning his career at Eli Lilly and Company, which produces medicines for 40 million people every day. Ricks and Lilly quickly sprang into action at the start of COVID-19, creating testing capacity where none existed, immediately working on antibody therapies and more. He discusses all that, what needs to take place to “crush” this virus and the list he keeps and reviews annually to guide his efforts in the workplace and the broader community.

Laura Merrifield Wilson: 2020 Election and a Little Football Oct 13, 2020

Laura Merrifield Wilson’s fear after the “dumpster fire” first presidential debate is that those not fully engaged already will be “turned off from politics.” She shares, in her view, the one state to watch most closely on election night as well as whether the “crumbling of the blue wall” that took place in 2016 will continue. The University of Indianapolis political science professor dives into congressional and state races also, sharing her nonpartisan analysis on population trends, moderates running for governor in a polarized society, the engagement of college students and much more. With multiple degrees from the University of Alabama, we also venture into a little college football, her most memorable game as an in-person fan and a prediction or two.

Joe Comartin: Bridging the Way in Canada Sep 29, 2020

The relationship (economic and beyond) between Indiana (as well as the entire United States) and Canada is a critical one. One of the traditional partners in helping ensure continuity in that relationship is the Consul General of Canada to Detroit. Joe Comartin – a lawyer, Member of Parliament and university professor throughout his career – currently serves in that role. He talks supply chains, transportation arteries, the new USMCA (replacing NAFTA), tariffs and just what that partnership truly means. Spoiler alert (in a good way): A pilot program is dramatically reducing the wait time for trucks at the border crossing in Detroit.

Kimberly Lewis: ‘Every day is a great day’ Sep 15, 2020

Here is the Kimberly Lewis story in two quotes: Before: “My one goal back then was just to meet my need for drugs. Everything in my life surrounded my addiction.” Today: “I’m learning how to live sober for the first time in a very long time. I’m always looking at myself and being responsible for my actions – just wanting to be better each day.” Lewis went from an addiction to pain medication to heroin use in a short time. Fraud and forgery led to a 15-year prison sentence. She served a little more than one-third of that time, beginning the road to recovery in prison. On her first day in work release, she became aware of an employment opportunity at ClickGoodwill. Her career there continues to grow after two-plus years.

Brian Cuban: Sharing His Story of Recovery Sep 01, 2020

He is a strong national voice on the topic and will be detailing his story at the September 16 Indiana Employer Opioid Summit (www.wellnessindiana.org/event/indiana-opioid-summit). 2020 Snapshot: Keeping Score for Indiana Aug 04, 2020

A snapshot is defined as a brief look or summary. That’s what the Indiana Chamber has done this year with the new report Indiana Vision 2025: 2020 Snapshot. It analyzes 10 states, instead of all 50 (as in the biennial full Report Cards). It uses 32 (or about half the typical total) of the key metrics in four drivers. Chamber President Kevin Brinegar and Adam Berry, vice president of economic development and technology, break down the results – both the good news and the areas where continued improvement is essential. It’s also informative to see how our Midwest neighbors and five competitor states (Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Tennessee and Utah) are doing.

Elliott Parker: Innovation at a High Alpha Pace Jul 07, 2020

Large-scale enterprises (think big companies, leaders in their fields) are built, in Elliott Parker’s words, to execute at scale. Start-ups, he says, are designed to learn, pivot quickly and move fast. Bringing the two together is the focus of High Alpha Innovation, with the goal of launching 100 start-ups within the next five years. It’s a venture studio playbook that High Alpha has used in creating its own portfolio of successful start-ups in recent years. Now, it’s bringing the advantages of existing companies to the mix with a co-creation approach. Parker first came to Indiana for an internship with Roche and returned two-plus years ago to join the High Alpha team.

Elaine Bedel: Building Indiana’s Brand Jun 23, 2020

It began with 2019 legislation to shift tourism efforts. It’s expanded to telling Indiana’s full story – to also attract and retain businesses, students and talent. It is the Indiana Destination Development Corporation (IDDC), being led by Elaine Bedel, former Indiana Economic Development Corporation president. Bedel talks about starting with a clean slate (pointing toward a July 1, 2020 debut), seeing the world change beginning in mid-March and adjusting to meet today’s needs. It’s all about changing the external view of the state from “no perception” for too many to a predominantly positive outlook. Partnerships, funding and more are all part of the equation. The success of the IDDC will be critical to the state’s future.

Bruce Mehlman: What today’s reality means for tomorrow Jun 09, 2020

Bruce Mehlman possesses a wide variety of experiences in business and government. He uses those to help deliver insightful analysis into national and global trends in business and politics. His quarterly updates are viewed by thousands of followers – more than 110,000 for the most recent version on COVID-19 and its impacts. He talks Congress (the only thing Congress likes more than the way things are done is the way things were done), the race for president (fear of a second pandemic wave and the intersection of public health with politics), technology, disruption and much more. In the end, he gives examples, notes that our country “majors in comebacks” and states that there are reasons to be positive.

Rob Martens: “ ‘Peak’ing around the corners” of the future of business Apr 28, 2020

He’s not the first to note this, but he says it well. “We really know how to build things here. Silicon Valley is very focused on connecting things. There’s a gap in the marketplace for taking those big, complex physical things (that we build) and connecting them to the application layer, with that software layer. This is a huge opportunity for us.” Rob Martens is chief innovation and design officer, among other roles, for Allegion. His job involves taking the door and security functions that have been part of the company for more than 100 years and “futuring” their applications. Ronald Rochon (USI): ‘I Love This Place’ Mar 31, 2020

Ronald Rochon terms the University of Southern Indiana campus on the west side of Evansville as a “hidden gem.” Beyond the aesthetic beauty, he says visitors will see an “immediate approach in how people respond to one another. We are a campus of choice, a campus of care and a campus of compassion. I love this place.” Rochon notes USI is home to many first-generation students and large numbers that come from Indiana. While the goal is to prepare them to achieve on a global basis, a significant majority makes the determination to stay close to home in our state. Learn more at www.usi.edu.

Gregory Hess: Wabash College’s Focus and Ambition Mar 17, 2020

Wabash College provides what President Gregory Hess calls an “intentionally intimate liberal arts experience.” It is one of only a handful of all-male higher education institutions remaining in the country – a status it is safe to say is not going to change. Hess says a clear mission with a focus on excellence of students allows the college to make a difference. It also prompts alumni to give back at historic levels and in many ways, including a formal network for finding students/graduates a place to stay if in a new community for a job interview. Find out what class Hess loves to teach, his take on the passion for football and other sports on campus and beyond, his favorite athletic teams and his goals moving forward. (Note: After our podcast recording and before its release, Hess announced his departure from Wabash at the end of the current academic year for a position as CEO of IES Abroad, providing study abroad and internship programs). Deborah Curtis: Indiana State University’s strategic approach Mar 03, 2020

Indiana State University President Deborah Curtis doesn’t think the college residential campus will ever go away, but acknowledges that the growing “some college, no degree” market requires a pivot in serving those students. ISU boasts unique programs ranging from packaging engineering technology (the only accredited program in the nation) and construction management to insurance/risk management and RN to BSN (for nurses). Curtis discusses the large percentage of students who come from – and remain in – the state. “Our mission is to serve the workforce needs of Indiana,” she says. She focuses on enrollment, communications and fundraising and identifies her two favorite days of the year. Learn more at www.indstate.edu.

Talkin’ Trades: Reaching Out to Students Feb 18, 2020

If you’re experiencing challenges finding the workers you need – and who isn’t – you certainly realize that simply “complaining” about the lack of talent isn’t going to get the job done. Part of the longer-term play is reaching out directly to students to educate them about careers, including in the trades. Holly Ward of Irving Materials Inc. (aka the “Rock Lady”) and Jesse Johnson of Metal Supermarkets are going above the norm. They passionately advocate for career opportunities in the rock/materials industries and the welding profession. They visit with students; they donate materials; they help schools and teachers meet their needs. Most of all, they provide a path to career happiness for many – and convince a few parents along the way. Learn more:

    Kevin Brinegar: Indiana’s 20-year success story Feb 04, 2020

Modesty is a good thing – most of the time. One of the exceptions might be when it comes to “selling” Indiana to those who might not be as familiar with the many attributes the state has to offer. We’re not going to recount those many qualities today – you know what they are. Chamber President Kevin Brinegar will share the journey, however, that has propelled Indiana from economic depths in the early 2000s to a Midwest leader and national competitor as we launch into the 2020s. It’s that success that helps produce the many positive things we should be proclaiming across the country and beyond. Learn more:
