David Oyelowo: Actor, director, optimist and MMA fan Dec 23, 2020
    Show notes

David Oyelowo, perhaps best known for his role as Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, knows it's a tricky time to bring out a sci-fi drama that deals with the end of the world as we know it. But The Midnight Sky, directed by George Clooney and arriving on Netflix this December, isn't just a story about goodbyes, he says. It's about people, love, beginnings and -- in the age of COVID-19 -- a reminder of just how fragile our world is. He's also happy to share why he loves the gamesmanship of mixed martial arts.

AnnaSophia Robb: Actress in Little Fires Everywhere and Dr. Death Dec 09, 2020
    Show notes

For most of us, 2020 has been a garbage year. But for actress AnnaSophia Robb it has been huge with roles in the Hulu mini-series Little Fires Everywhere (playing a younger version of Reese Witherspoon), in the film Words on Bathroom Walls, and in the series The Expecting on the now defunct video service Quibi.

In her youth, she had a very successful career in films like Because of Winn-Dixie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Bridge To Terabithia. She even starred on the CW series The Carrie Diaries as a young Carrie Bradshaw based on the character Sarah Jessica Parker made famous on the series Sex and the City.

Dr. John Carlos: The World's Fastest humanitarian Dec 02, 2020
    Show notes

One of the most iconic examples of athletes using their visibility to protest political and social issues took place at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. After placing first and third respectively in the 200-meter event, runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists atop the medal stand as the Star Spangled banner played. The act was meant to bring attention to human rights.

52 years later Dr. John Carlos, billed as the world's fastest humanitarian, is featured in the new documentary film Ali's Comeback: The Untold Story which covers the years Muhammed Ali was banned from boxing and what it took legally, socially and politically for him to make his comeback. Carlos cites Ali as a friend and peer who would tour schools in the US talking about activism and the importance of fighting for human rights.

In his latest book, Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace, the acclaimed researcher and author examines the lives of sperm whales, chimpanzees and macaws. When we humans aren't getting in their way -- and invading their space -- the way animals live isn't so very different from how we do. It's a realization that may help enable us to save species from extinction.
