088 -- Uncontrolled Darkness -- Schizoaffective Disorder -- with Sinead from Mens Rea Jan 04, 2019

Show notes

Nobody wants a serious and persistent mental illness. Seriously, nobody. But if forced to choose, there are reasonably acceptable ones, and then there is that one really, really bad one. The worst: Schizoaffective Disorder.
Sinead, from the Mens Rea podcast, returns to parse out the possibilities of what that’s like.

”Wrongful conviction” is one of the scariest phrases in the English languages. Don’t believe me? Listen in while Sinead, from the Mens Rea podcast, and I discuss the case of Ron Williamson, arrested and convicted in Oklahoma for a crime he decidedly did not commit.

086 -- Maybe They Weren't on the Bus in the First Place -- the patriarchy Dec 28, 2018

Show notes

The patriarchy is a thing, but not always a bad thing. Unless you’re talking about the patriarchy in a small college town in the middle of nowhere, a few decades ago. Then, well… maybe it still depends on your perspective.
My friend Ted joined me to discuss our different (but not so different) experiences of the same school, around the same time. And it turns out? He’s a lot nicer than I am.

084 -- I Don't Give a Flying Duck -- Bob Berdella -- with Martinis and the Macabre Dec 19, 2018

Show notes

'Tis the season for torture and rape…. Buckle in, kids, it's a wild ride.
When you let me go play with one of my very favorite podcasting couples (Erica and Billy from Martinis and the Macabre), and it's Erica's birthday, and I'm feeling goofy even before the alcohol starts... well...
Besides, we needed a little lubrication to be able to cope with the subject matter (serial killer Bob Berdella). Please hear me when I say: LISTEN TO THE DISCLAIMER. Maybe twice. Whooo.

082 -- Going off the Rails -- Ted Bundy -- with Erin from Redrum Blonde Dec 15, 2018

Show notes

Many true crime aficionados will tell you that that don’t play favorites. They hurt for all victims, equally, and they share the same hatred for all perpetrators, equally… but, seriously??
Erin, from Redrum Blonde Redrum Blonde joined me to talk about Ted Bundy, specifically his later crimes, and why both of us could have been vulnerable to him.

081 -- Sandy Hook Dec 14, 2018

Show notes

On December 14, 2012, 20 children and 6 adults lost their lives in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, USA.
It was bad. This is not the story of the shooter, or the society, or a number of other big, bad things. This is 20-some stories of the lost, or the kids, or the small, good things.
Please note that there is NOT a disclaimer to this one, but it is the hardest episode I have created and it is even harder to listen to. Even though it's mostly happy. Even though there is no gore or threat. They deserve your time, if you can give it. And if you can't, you can't: no guilt there.

080 -- It Wasn't Easy -- ER Nursing with Megan Dec 13, 2018

Show notes

Lots of us indulge (or maybe wallow?) in dark humor, from time to time, because we're human and it's kinda funny and many of us are jerks. But there is a special flavor of humor that seems to run in the health care field.
Megan works in an ER, and she agreed to come talk to me about her experiences. And maybe share a few totally inappropriate, and completely hilarious, stories...

Show notes

When you decide it's time to make a major change, is it running away, avoiding or escaping? ...or just self-care?
