Today, we are honored to talk to Jayd Henricks who worked for the USCCB for over 11 years, including six years as the executive director of government relations. He joins Andrew Petiprin to talk about some of these experiences. The two talk about the institution of the Church, the USCCB, the state of our priests and bishops today, and the “liturgy wars” we are starting to see unfold in our communities. His inciteful commentary is refreshing both for his honesty and realism, but also for his insights and hope for the future of the Church. In short, he encourages the institution of the Church and her leaders to turn more to Christ in His fullness for as Pope Leo XIV states “unless we give Christ in his fullness, we give very little.”

Dr. Christopher Kaczor is the president of the American Catholic Philosophical Association, professor of philosophy at Loyola Marymount University, and author of the new book “Vital Conflicts,” which explores three of the most controversial issues in bioethics—abortion, transgender, and claims of conscience. He joins Andrew Petiprin today to discuss this new book and the bioethical issues it covers. In particular, Dr. Kaczor discusses how to have a fruitful conversation with people on these topics, and he highlights one of his favorite arguments against abortion that came from an atheist. He and Andrew also dive deeper into the mind/body problem that plagues these issues of human sexuality. This conversation and corresponding book are a great resource for people who are interested in the Catholic position on these matters and for Catholics who want to know more about the arguments behind the Church’s teachings.

But his personal life and upbringing are often overlooked. So today, Dr. Hughes talks about the personal side of Fulton Sheen—his childhood, education, and daily life. She details how he got his name, his life as a farmer, what he ate, his time as an altar server, and much more. In many ways, he is an example of an ordinary man that God worked through to do extraordinary things for Christ, His Church, and even America at large.

A repeat visitor to the Ignatius Press Podcast, Dr. Bruchalski is a well-known doctor who serves women of all ages through Tepeyac OBGYN. He has written an amazing book “Two Patients” where he describes his history as an OBGYN who performed abortions, but then later reverted to Catholicism and her authentic teachings on faith and morals.

However, today we will focus less on his own personal story which was the subject of our last episode with him, and instead zero in on what he learned from his conversion and years in the medical field. He and Ben Eriksen discuss his reasons for joining the medical field and how the devil slowly tempted him and misinformed him. They also discuss what parents should do when their children fall astray and what doctors should do when their patients seek immoral treatments. Finally, they examine the future of the prolife movement after the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. This is an enlightening discussion which demonstrates the mercy God offers to all of us.

We are truly living through an Augustinian moment, and so we are delighted to have Mike Aquilina back on the podcast to discuss this Father of the Church as we celebrate his feast day and the end of August.

In this episode. Mike and Andrew discuss why everyone should read St. Augustine, where to begin with his works, and why his writings are so relevant for us today. Mike beautifully captures the heart of St. Augustine, and Mike’s passion for this great saint is infectious to all who listen. We highly recommend this episode and Mike’s books for those who know little about St. Augustine or for those who are lifelong devotees and want to learn more.

The most recent ecumenical council was the Second Vatican Council. Our guest today, Paul Senz, has written a book about the councils and joins Andrew Peteprin to talk about what a council is and why they are important.
