Forman Memorial Lecture OCT 28, 2021 - 10:00 AM TO 11:30 AM EDT In this year’s Martin J. Forman lecture, UNICEF’s Executive Director Henrietta H. Fore, an avid champion of children and young people’s rights, will reflect on the children and young people who have inspired her. She will recount their struggles with the food choices they are making and the food environments in which they are making these choices, and will share how young people are contributing to the transformation of global and local food systems. Ms. Fore will offer concrete next steps on how to ensure that children and young people are at the center of discussions on food systems transformation. Participants at the lecture will also have an opportunity to listen to youth representatives about their experiences and perspectives. The annual lecture commemorates the significant impact on international nutrition by Martin J. Forman, who headed the Office of Nutrition at USAID for more than 20 years. The Road Towards the WTO MC12: A Latin America and the Caribbean Perspective Oct 26, 2021
    Show notes

BOOK LAUNCH The Road Towards the WTO MC12: A Latin America and the Caribbean Perspective Co-Organized by IFPRI and Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA) OCT 27, 2021 - 12:00 PM TO 01:00 PM EDT In the run-up to the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference, major challenges face the governance of agricultural and food trade. In today’s context of change and uncertainty, the relative importance and urgency of traditional agricultural trade issues (including domestic support and market access) and the possibilities to progress with a multilateral strategy seem to have diminished. With the growing global focus on the environmental and nutritional dimensions of food systems and the global responsibility of all countries to contribute to food system transformation, attention must be paid to new agricultural trade issues that have gained greater urgency. The WTO, as the primary institution overseeing multilateral negotiations and trade, must identify the main elements and issues that can define its new roles, functions, and institutional organization. The papers in this new publication from IFPRI and IICA look at these challenges and what they mean for Latin America. Join us to hear from the book’s authors and discussants on the main agricultural trade negotiation issues for the next WTO Ministerial Conference from a Latin American perspective. Some of the underlying work for this presentation was funded by the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM). PIM Webinar: Innovations in agricultural insurance Oct 26, 2021
    Show notes

PIM Webinar Innovations in agricultural insurance: Lessons learnt about managing smallholder farmer risks October 26, 2021 Market and weather-related risks pose significant challenges to smallholder producers. These risks can make production and incomes volatile from year to year, reduce food security, threaten assets and financial security, and make farmers hesitant to invest in new technologies or practices to increase long-term productivity and welfare. Agricultural insurance (https://www.ifpri.org/publication/building-resilience-through-climate-risk-insurance-insights-agricultural-research) has the potential to help farmers manage these risks. However, insurance markets in many developing countries are either weak or inaccessible to most smallholders. Innovative forms of agricultural insurance, such as index-based insurance (IBI), have gained attention in recent years as a way of overcoming many of the limitations of traditional forms of agricultural insurance, but questions remain regarding these tools’ effectiveness and scalability. Since 2012, the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM) has helped fund a program of action-oriented research on tools for improving smallholder farmers’ resilience to climate risks, including agricultural insurance. The work has resulted in more flexible forms of IBI, as well as an innovative Picture-Based Insurance (PBI) scheme. This webinar will present an evaluation of how these tools have spawned further interest by academic, development, government, and private sector actors, as well as recommendations for future research on risk management. Opening remarks and moderator: Nicholas Minot (https://www.ifpri.org/profile/nicholas-minot) , Deputy Division Director, Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Speakers: Peter Hazell (http://tools4valuechains.org/peter-hazell-0) , Research Fellow Emeritus, IFPRI Anne G.Timu (https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-gesare-timu-36220759/?originalSubdomain=ke), Economist, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Berber Kramer (https://www.ifpri.org/profile/berber-kramer), Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI Closing remarks: Frank Place (https://www.ifpri.org/profile/frank-place), Director, CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM) If you wish to receive alerts about future PIM webinars, please subscribe here: https://pim.cgiar.org/subscribe/ For more information about this webinar, visit the event page: https://pim.cgiar.org/2021/10/01/innovations-in-agricultural-insurance-lessons-learnt-about-managing-smallholder-farmer-risks/ Recordings of all previous PIM Webinars are available at https://pim.cgiar.org/knowledge-center/webinars/ If you wish to receive alerts about future PIM webinars, please subscribe here: https://pim.cgiar.org/subscribe/

Global Food 50/50 Report: Inaugural report on gender, diversity and power in the global food system Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

POLICY SEMINAR Global Food 50/50 Report: Inaugural report on gender, diversity and power in the global food system Co-Organized by IFPRI and Global Health 50/50 OCT 5, 2021 - 08:00 AM TO 09:15 AM EDT In the lead up to the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit, tens of thousands of people participated in a global civic experience to produce a shared framework of collective action. Gender equality and women’s empowerment were amplified as a lever of change and embraced as an area of work with the potential to contribute wide-ranging positive change in the transformation of food systems in the coming decade. The establishment of the Global Food 50/50 initiative is a response to broad stakeholder demands for a global food system that is accountable for progress towards gender equality. This event marks the launch of the inaugural Global Food 50/50 Report, which reviews the gender- and equity-related policies and practices of 52 global food system organizations as they relate to two interlinked dimensions of inequality: inequality of opportunity in careers inside organizations and inequality in who benefits from the global food system. The Report shows that organizational commitment to gender equality is high, and that over half of organizations are transparent about their policies on shaping diverse, inclusive, and equitable working environments for people. The latest data also suggest, however, that rhetoric may be used as a substitute for action. Leadership remains disproportionately male and dominated by nationals of Europe and North America. The report asserts that the skewed distribution of power and privilege is undermining global efforts to reach the Sustainable Development Goals. This policy seminar will present the findings of the report and explore how this new accountability mechanism can power a broader movement to demand more equitable and inclusive organizations across the global food system. Introductory Remarks: Johan Swinnen, Director General, CGIAR-IFPRI Kent Buse, Co-Founder and Co-Director, Global Health 50/50 Results of 2021 Global Food 50/50 Report: Jemimah Njuki, Director for Africa, CGIAR-IFPRI Sonja Tanaka, Coordinator, Global Health 50/50 Keynote Address: Agnes Kalibata, UN Special Envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit Panelists: Jamille Bigio, Senior Coordinator for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, USAID Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Rick White, Chair of the Private Sector Mechanism of the United Nation Committee on World Food Security (CFS) Vicki Wilde, Senior Program Officer, Gender and Agriculture Development, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Closing Remarks: Sarah Hawkes, Co-Founder and Co-Director, Global Health 50/50 Moderator: Katarlah Taylor, Events Manager, CGIAR-IFPRI LINKS: Global Health 50/50: https://globalhealth5050.org/ 2021 Global Food 50/50 Report: https://www.ifpri.org/publication/2021-global-food-5050-report IFPRI And UN Food Systems Summit 2021: https://www.ifpri.org/ifpri-unfss-2021 More on the seminar: https://www.ifpri.org/event/making-most-intra-african-trade-2021-africa-agriculture-trade-monitor Subscribe IFPRI Insights newsletter and event announcements at www.ifpri.org/content/newsletter-subscription

PIM Webinar: Myths About the Feminization of Agriculture Sep 14, 2021
    Show notes

PIM Webinar Myths About the Feminization of Agriculture: Implications for Global Food Security September 14, 2021 The feminization of agriculture is a term used to describe women’s increased roles in agriculture in many parts of the world. However, the changes occurring in the agricultural sector are more complex than this term suggests. In this webinar, we will present and discuss findings of a new paper on myths about the feminization of agriculture, which resulted from the PIM-supported project on Feminization of Agriculture: Building evidence to debunk myths on current challenges and opportunities. ( https://pim.cgiar.org/2018/10/11/feminization-of-agriculture-call-for-proposals-five-projects-selected/) Drawing on a wide range of literature, this paper debunks four common myths: 1) feminization of agriculture is the predominant global trend; 2) feminization is bad for agriculture; 3) the women remaining in agriculture are passive victims and not farmers; and 4) women farmers everywhere face similar challenges as the rural sector transforms. We argue that there are a wide range of changes happening regarding rural labor, for both men and women. Women’s increased roles in agriculture may offer opportunities for gender transformation under certain conditions but maybe disempowering under other conditions. We discuss implications of these changes for global food security agenda toward gender equity and equality in the agricultural sector. Presenters: Cheryl Doss (https://www.qeh.ox.ac.uk/people/cheryl-doss), Associate Professor and Senior Departmental Lecturer in development economics at the Oxford Department of International Development, University of Oxford, and leader of the Cross-Cutting Gender Research and Coordination (https://pim.cgiar.org/research/f6/) flagship in PIM. Using Big Data & Machine Learning to Predict Poverty & Malnutrition Aug 03, 2021
    Show notes

Food Security Portal Virtual Seminar Using Big Data and Machine Learning to Predict Poverty and Malnutrition for Targeting, Mapping, Monitoring, and Early Warning July 28, 2021, 08:00 am EDT Increasingly plentiful data and powerful predictive algorithms have heightened the promise of data science for humanitarian and development programming. As agencies increasingly embrace and invest in machine learning methods for poverty and malnutrition targeting, mapping, monitoring, and early warning, it is essential to recognize that different objectives require distinct data and methods. In this webinar, we highlight the differences between poverty and malnutrition targeting and mapping, the differences between structural and stochastic deprivation, and the modeling and data challenges of early warning systems development based on machine learning methods. We also present two studies that apply machine learning methods to predict poverty and malnutrition. This webinar is the second of a two-part webinar to present new data and findings from ongoing research under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) (http://www.usaid.gov/)-funded project "Harnessing Big Data and Machine Learning to Feed the Future" (http://barrett.dyson.cornell.edu/research/innovations.html), based at Cornell University. Researchers and analysts from operational agencies are invited to join these events for a presentation and discussion of key principles, data sources, methods, and applications. Linden McBride, St Mary’s College of Maryland, discussed a number of conceptual issues in this research area. Yanyan Liu, IFPRI, presented a study that uses publicly available, moderate-resolution vegetation index (normalized difference vegetation index, or NDVI) data and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to produce accurate poverty estimates at the community level in low-income, rural economies. Chris Browne, Cornell University, presented a second study that demonstrates how interpretable multivariate random forest models can produce estimates of a set of (potentially correlated) malnutrition and poverty prevalence measures using free, open access, regularly updated, georeferenced data. Finally, Medha Bulumulla, Cornell University, briefly introduced the USAID project web site where data, papers, presentations, and code are freely available and walk participants through an annotated code that can be adapted and replicated for other applications. Presenters: Linden McBride (http://lindenmcbride.com/index.html), Assistant Professor, St Mary’s College of Maryland, US Yanyan Liu (https://www.ifpri.org/profile/yanyan-liu), Senior Research Fellow, Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, IFPRI, USA Chris Browne (https://www.cam.cornell.edu/research/grad-students/chris-browne), PhD Candidate, Center for Applied Mathematics, Cornell University, USA Medha Bulumulla, Research Assistant, Cornell University, USA Moderator: Christopher B. Barrett (https://dyson.cornell.edu/faculty-research/faculty/cbb2/) , SB&JG Ashley Professor, Cornell University, USA Discussant: Rob Vos (https://www.ifpri.org/profile/rob-vos), Director of Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, IFPRI, USA For more information and other webinar materials, visit https://www.foodsecurityportal.org/node/1765 Other Food Security Portal (FSP) Events: https://www.foodsecurityportal.org/events
