The '95-96 UMass Minutemen clued the nation in on their secret at the beginning of the season when they defeated #1 Kentucky 92-82 to start a run of 26 consecutive wins. The secret? John Calipari's squad was really, really good. So was Marcus Camby. The junior center poured in 32 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. It would remain a theme as the season went on with Camby leading the Minutemen to a #1 ranking, a #1 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament.

Once there the Minutemen survived a scare from Stanford to reach the Sweet 16 where they destroyed 12-seed Arkansas to set up an Elite 8 showdown with Allen Iverson and the 2-seed Georgetown Hoyas. As it turns out it was only a showdown on paper as UMass cruised to a 14 point win and a trip to the schools first Final Four.

Camby won several National Player of the Year awards for averaging 21ppg, 8rpg, and nearly 4 blocks before declaring for the NBA Draft where he was selected 2nd overall.

“He was the difference on the team. Marcus is the one that got us to that other level. If anybody turned this program around, it was Marcus.”

-Carmelo Travieso, Starting Guard

Founded in 1966 Five Star for generations was known to basketball insiders, people involved with the game, as one of the showcases for outstanding players of the future. Stories from the Starters (The Chucker interviews former WCC POY Casey Calvary) Dec 02, 2020

Show notes

Send us Fan Mail

Guest: Casey Calvary

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/casey-calvary-1.html

Host(s): The Chucker

Around the turn of the century, Casey teamed with the likes of Richie Frahm, Matt Santangelo, and Dan Dickau in leading the Zags to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. That streak continues today, as Gonzaga has made 21 straight trips to the Big Dance, a mark only bested by Kansas, Duke, and fellow 19nine school Michigan State.
Casey was the 2001 West Coast Conference Player of the Year and followed that up with a professional career in Japan, France, Australia, and Spain.
19nine excited to have Casey here to reflect on that run and Gonzaga’s ascent as a premier college basketball program.
Take The Kennel, your home court, off the table. What’s the coolest gym you played in?
Team you least enjoyed playing?
Team you took great pride in beating?
Most impressive opponent? (a specific player who impressed)
Most overhyped guy you played against?
Guy you’re most surprised didn’t carve out a more successful professional career?
One Gonzaga teammate described you as a mellow dude off the court, but a guy who would run through his own mother to get a rebound. How accurate is that assessment?
Coach Izzo at Michigan State plays the accordion. What’s something people would be surprised to know about Coach Few?
At 19nine, we recently released the Gonzaga’s 1999 shorts as well as the Zags’ 2001 joints. Which did you prefer?
