Dinosaur Trace Fossils and Dr. Anthony Martin on Tracks, Nests, Burrows, and Coprolites Jan 26, 2015
    Show notes

How do scientists study dinosaurs without bones? Dr. Anthony Martin explains how tracks, nests, burrows, coprolites, and other trace fossils reveal dinosaur behavior and prehistoric life.

Most dinosaur discoveries focus on skeletons, but trace fossils can reveal how dinosaurs actually lived. In this episode, ichnologist Dr. Anthony J. Martin explains how dinosaur tracks, nests, burrows, coprolites (fossilized dung), gastroliths, and other trace fossils help scientists reconstruct dinosaur behavior that bones alone cannot show.

We explore what trace fossils reveal about dinosaur parenting, herd movement, hunting, swimming, migration, feeding, and nesting, along with the discovery of the first known burrowing dinosaur, Oryctodromeus. Dr. Martin also discusses how paleontologists test hypotheses, why modern birds help explain dinosaur behavior, and how new fossil discoveries continue to reshape dinosaur science.

The conversation also covers famous dinosaur track sites, the challenges of identifying fossil evidence in the field, and how dinosaur research is changing our understanding of prehistoric ecosystems and ancient landscapes.

Interview with Dr. Anthony J. Martin, author of Dinosaurs Without Bones, which details the day to day lives of dinosaurs by studying ichnology (the study of traces such as footprints or burrows rather than fossilized bones).

Also, dinosaur of the day Oryctodromeus, a dinosaur that burrowed.

Tyrannosaurus rex and Pete Larson on Sue, T. rex Behavior, and Dinosaur Science Jan 22, 2015
    Show notes

What does the fossil evidence really tell us about Tyrannosaurus rex? Pete Larson explains T. rex research, behavior, hunting, parenting, fossils, and the science behind one of history's most famous dinosaurs.

Tyrannosaurus rex is one of the best-known dinosaurs, but new dinosaur research continues to reshape what scientists know about how it lived. In this episode, paleontologist Pete Larson, president of the Black Hills Institute and leader of the famous Sue excavation, explains what decades of fossil discoveries have revealed about T. rex.

We discuss the evidence behind the predator-versus-scavenger debate, whether Tyrannosaurus rex may have hunted in family groups, how scientists study dinosaur behavior from fossils, and what discoveries suggest about parenting, feathers, biomechanics, growth, and sexual differences. Pete also shares how new paleontology research changes long-held ideas as additional fossils are discovered and studied.

Interview with Pete Larson from the Black Hills Institute and a discussion of the new movie "Dinosaur 13" which details the discovery and legal battle over the T. rex Sue.
