55. Beneath the Cross of Jesus mini-episode Apr 18, 2022

Show notes

Happy Resurrection Day to our Hymn Talk Twin Talk family!

We are so excited for you to hear this episode. How much do you know about this hymn and its author, Elizabeth Clephane? You will notice that this is a shorter episode than what we usually do. We actually presented this episode LIVE to our church family on Sunday, April 10, 2022. You will hear us singing in a trio with one of our church family members, Stephanie Pothier. We love her alto voice! You will also hear a dear friend, Diane Waddell, on violin. You will hear it exactly the way our church family saw it. If you would like to see this episode on video, please head on over to our Youtube channel: Hymn Talk Twin Talk.

Because it's a shorter episode, you won't hear anything about the hymn's composer Frederick Maker We will definitely be revisiting Beneath the Cross of Jesus in a future episode.

Thank you for listening. Thank you for supporting Hymn Talk Twin Talk.

May your hearts and voices be lifted in praise this Easter. He is risen! He is risen indeed!

54. O Sacred Head Now Wounded Apr 11, 2022

Show notes

O Sacred Head Now Wounded....

Originally a Latin poem from the 1200's, a tune was added, then translated to German, re-harmonized by a famous Baroque composer, and eventually translated to English... we finally see this poem in American hymnals after the year 1829.

This hymn took quite the journey to get to us and it's all focused on Jesus's crucifixion. His journey to the cross was the greatest event in human history and his resurrection is the greatest miracle in history! We are so happy to be talking about this hymn this week.

We are so grateful that we got to dive into this one, learning about a female text writer who is NEW to us and remembering a much-loved composer.

52. Faith Is The Victory Mar 07, 2022

Show notes

Taken right from the Bible, these words are powerful, encouraging, and TRUE! The poet, John Yates, had such a way with words that when our composer, Ira Sankey, read his poems, he immediately recruited him to write gospel songs for the tent meetings that he and Dwight Moody were running all over the United States and abroad.

These two men were quite a pair writing many gospel hymns together, but Faith Is The Victory is arguably their most well-known.

Thank you for listening! Please sing along! We are sharing lots of music today!

48. Be Thou My Vision Jan 10, 2022

Show notes

What a way to start 2022! Our first episode of the new year is all about praying for wisdom, guidance, and strength, and promising to put God first in all things.

Our friend Emily requested this hymn and we are so thankful we got to learn about it. From St. Patrick in the year 433 to the churches of Ireland in 2020, we see that this hymn has a timeless message. Many hymn that utilize the old-fashioned language such as thee and thou have been lost or updated with contemporary language. We are so impressed that this hymn has been preserved all this time. God has a message for us all with this hymn. What is this hymn saying to you today?

If you're curious about some of the things we talked about today, please visit these sites:

Tonia Evans Cianculli

Hymns of the Heart

The Heart's Obsession

Tosca by Puccini

Alexandra College in Dublin

Dominican Sisters in Ireland

Visit Slane Hill

The Irish Blessing from Ireland churches

We hope you enjoy learning about this old hymn. This old hymn that was forgotten about for centuries... God took what was dead and made it alive again; God took what was ancient and made it new; God took what the world ignored and made it into something beautiful.

God bless you as you listen today!

Please find us on social media so you can participate in our GIVEAWAY. You can WIN a copy of Tonia's CD! All our info is below.
