S13E4 - Inspiring TED Talks - Secrets of Success in 8 Words, 3 Minutes, with Richard St. John Jan 23, 2021
    Show notes

In this 'Inspiring TED Talks" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) explores Richard St. John's famous 2007 TED Talk, "Secrets of Success in 8 Words, 3 Minutes." See the full video here: https://youtu.be/Y6bbMQXQ180. Overview of video: "Analyst and bestselling author, Richard St. John, managed to condense 7 years of interviews into an unforgettable 3-minute presentation about what it takes to be truly successful. Believe us, nobody is as cognizant of your time as St. John. This 3-minute talk is normally presented as a 2-hour presentation to high school students." Richard St. John's (https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-st-john-02845b/) first career was at Nortel Networks Research and Development labs where he spent ten years as a member of scientific staff doing Design, Research, Writing, Photography, Advertising, Videos, and Marketing for innovative telecom products. He couldn’t decide which title to put on his business card so he just left it off. An appropriate title would have been “de-mystic.” Because he loved to research and analyze the complex technology products scientists were inventing and then communicate them in ways that everyone could understand. In his second career as an entrepreneur he started a successful marketing company and won top awards, including best corporate video in the world and an IABC Gold Quill, the most prestigious award in business communications. He stumbled into his third career as a Success Analyst by accident. He had been going to TED for years and was on a plane looking forward to it again. In the seat next to him was a teenage girl and she asked him a question that changed the course of his life: “What really leads to success?” Even though he had achieved some success he couldn’t tell her how he did it. So to answer her question he started interviewing a few successful people. Then every year a few more, and the little project he thought would take a month turned into a 15-year passion and obsession. His research grew to over 1,000 face-to-face interviews with extraordinarily successful people, including Bill Gates, Martha Stewart, Richard Branson, the Google founders, Rupert Murdoch, Jane Goodall, Nobel Prize winners, and the list goes on... He analyzed every word they said and built one of the largest, most organized databases on success. And from that he wrote a bestseller "The 8 Traits Successful People Have in Common: 8 to Be Great." S13E1 - Servant Leadership Series - The Selfish/Unselfish Mindset and Servant Leadership, with Dr. Eric Russell Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) and Dr. Eric Russell continue their servant leadership discussions and explore the connection between a selfish/unselfish mindset and servant leadership. See the video here: https://youtu.be/hCLhh8ASMus. Overview: It’s not about you. It never was and it never will be. It’s about the people who make it all work. Ask yourself: Where would you be without the cogs that make the engine run? One common mistake leaders make is thinking that profits and people are to be seen as separate entities, when they should go hand-in-hand. You can’t have one without the other, so why keep them separate? Great hero leaders help facilitate the success of others and make everyone feel value and their contributions matter to the overall success of the company. According to Survey Monkey, 43 percent of respondents said that feeling appreciated makes them more confident. More so, 78 percent felt happy after receiving gratitude. Great leaders drive change in many ways, but unselfishness is what ultimately allows them to scale their businesses and create a long-lasting legacy. Dr. Eric J. Russell is an Associate Professor in the Emergency Services department at UVU. His writings and research involve the influence of homeland security education on responders, as well as the impact of servant leadership on organizations and individuals. He is the author of more than 60 peer reviewed and trade publications as well as two books: The Desire to Serve: Servant Leadership for the Fire and Emergency Services (Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership) and In Command of Guardians: Executive Servant Leadership for the Community of Responders (Springer). In addition, Eric speaks nationally on the subjects of servant leadership and homeland security education. Dr. Russell retired early as a Captain from the Department of Defense/USAF Fire and Emergency Services with combined active duty military and DoD service. He is a Department of Defense Rescue Technician, Hazardous Materials Technician/IC, and a Dive Master. Dr. Russell is also a Certified Homeland Protection Professional (CHPP) from the National Sheriff's Association and the Global Society of Homeland and National Security Professionals (GSHNSP) and was awarded a Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security Studies from Michigan State University. Speech overview: "The 'I Have a Dream' speech, delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. before a crowd of some 250,000 people at the 1963 March on Washington, remains one of the most famous speeches in history. Weaving in references to the country’s Founding Fathers and the Bible, King used universal themes to depict the struggles of African Americans before closing with an improvised riff on his dreams of equality. S12E26 - Inspiring TED Talks - Tribal Leadership, with David Logan Jan 16, 2021
    Show notes

In this 'Inspiring TED Talks" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover explores David Logan's famous 2009 TED Talk, "Tribal leadership." Check out the video here: https://www.ted.com/talks/david_logan_tribal_leadership. Video Overview: "It’s easy to think that as a species we have evolved far beyond the days of tribalism, but management consultant David Logan argues that effective leaders understand the 5 kinds of tribes that still crop up naturally in nearly any setting. Logan’s talk takes you through the 5 tribes, or stages, beginning with “Life sucks” and ending with “Life is great." David Logan (https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidlogan/) studies how people communicate within a company -- and how to harness our natural gifts to make change within organizations. He looks at emerging patterns of corporate leadership, organizational transformation, generational differences in the workplace, and team building for high-potential managers and executives. He's the co-founder and senior partner at CultureSync, a management consulting firm, and works with Fortune 500 companies, governments, and nonprofits. Much of CultureSync's work is derived from a ten-year study of over 24,000 people published at Tribal Leadership (2008), which shows how organizational culture evolves over time and how leaders can nudge it forward. He teaches management and leadership in the USC Executive MBA, and is also on the faculty at the International Centre for Leadership in Finance (ICLIF), endowed by the former prime minister of Malaysia, and on the Foundation for Medical Excellence in Portland. From 2001-2004, he served as Associate Dean of Executive Education at USC. During that time, he started the Master of Medical Management (MMM), a business degree for midcareer medical doctors. He also initiated new executive education programs (often, in concert with the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development) with organizations as diverse as the Sierra Health Foundation, Northrop Grumman, and the City of Los Angeles. He continued to oversee many programs, including one of USC's first distance learning education courses for managers in Japan and a senior executive program at Toyota. Logan is co-author of four books including Tribal Leadership and The Three Laws of Performance.
