Ep. 11: Lobbying for Advocacy (feat. Courtney Snowden) Jan 27, 2021
    Show notes

For many progressives, the thought of hiring a lobbyist may have never even crossed the mind once. And it’s not a surprise. Lobbying has a stigma and its association with certain unscrupulous actors hasn’t done the industry any favors. That’s why Joe and Martín spend this episode shedding some light on what is often seen as a profession operating in the shadows. Learn what lobbyists do, how lobbyists can work with advocacy organizations, and whether you might need different lobbyists for different sides of the aisle. Also learn what and who are more important than any lobbyist ever will be. Tune in to hear from Courtney Snowden, a lobbyist who shakes up what you think of when you picture who a lobbyist is and what they do.

Ep. 10: When Advocacy Goes Wrong (feat. Katie Belanger) Jan 20, 2021
    Show notes

Advocacy work often means dealing with sensitive or personal issues for vulnerable communities on a daily basis. That’s why we need to be extra cautious that we’re doing advocacy right, and not inadvertently causing extra burdens or difficulties to arise for the very communities we’re fighting for. Tune in to learn how to know whether your advocacy is going in the right or wrong direction, and what you can do to recover if you’ve gone off the rails. Joe and Martín also dispel some myths about advocacy that might be pushing you in the wrong direction and they explain how planning and goal setting can keep you from going off track in the first place. Martín chats with Katie Belanger, an advocacy pro who will discuss the importance of recognizing your biases and how your advocacy should be upsetting people (the right way).

    Show notes

Fundraising is the lifeblood of advocacy work. Without steady, diversified revenue streams, nonprofits would not be able to fight the good fight day in and day out. In this episode, Joe and Martín share important lessons they’ve learned from years of advocacy work and training that will help you improve your quarterly reports. Tune in to learn how to connect your ask to a potential donor’s daily life, what materials you must have on hand in case a donor asks for them, and how using the RAT method will change your fundraising for good. Martín chats with professional fundraiser Joe Sangirardi of the Human Rights Campaign, who will explain how he’s adapted to fundraising during COVID and how you should reframe your thinking about fundraising as a science and a profession.
