How Should We Teach English Accents? With Bianca and Andy – S03E08 May 06, 2022
    Show notes

Is there a “standard” English accent, and do learners need to sound like "native" speakers?

Gav and Em explore what an accent is and why speaking fluently does not mean losing the sounds of your first language. Bianca from Unpuzzled English joins them to discuss English as a lingua franca, the difference between being understood and changing your identity, and why learners need to hear more than Received Pronunciation (RP) and General American (GA).

They also look at how teachers can bring a wider range of voices into listening lessons and use pronunciation practice, including minimal pairs, when a sound causes confusion. To finish, Andy from Parlour Language Room shares practical ways to learn phrasal verbs: choose the ones you need, notice particles and group expressions by topic.

How Can Teachers Use EdTech in English Lessons? With Charlie’s Lessons and LaDoris – S03E07 Apr 22, 2022
    Show notes

What is EdTech, and which digital tools are useful in an English lesson? Gav and Em explore educational technology with Charlie from Charlie’s Lessons, a teacher who shares practical ways to use it in the classroom.

Charlie explains how tools such as Padlet and Canva can help learners collaborate, while quizzes can check understanding and inform the next lesson. He also discusses interactive lesson platforms, including Nearpod, and makes the case for choosing technology that serves the class.

Em puts one idea into practice with a Nearpod lesson about memes. Gav tries the activities as a learner, describing images, answering questions and creating a meme of his own. Their experiment offers a glimpse of what an interactive online lesson can feel like from both sides of the screen.

In Teacher, Teach Me, American pronunciation coach LaDoris guides listeners through the long and short “e” sounds, with mouth-position tips and listening practice.

How Do Reporting Verbs Shape the News? Reported Speech and Ukraine Headlines – S03E06 Apr 08, 2022
    Show notes

Why does a headline say someone warned, denied or ordered something instead of simply saying they said it?

Gav and Em use news coverage of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine to explore reported speech and the meaning carried by reporting verbs. They dedicate this episode to people affected by the war, including their friends, students and followers in Ukraine.

The conversation begins at a bus stop: when we tell someone what happened, do we quote the speaker’s exact words or report the message in our own words? Gav and Em then look at verbs including denied, warned, accused, announced and ordered, and how each changes the way we understand a news report.

Em puts Gav through a reported speech quiz covering tense changes, questions, commands and modal verbs. They also discuss when a tense can stay the same, especially when the information is still true. It’s a practical episode for teachers explaining the grammar and learners meeting it in conversation and the news.

How Can You Teach English Pronunciation Clearly? With Rasoul and Toktam – S03E05 Mar 25, 2022
    Show notes

How do you help learners speak more clearly without making them afraid to speak?

Gav and Em explore practical ways to teach English pronunciation, joined by Rasoul, known as Mr Pronunciation, and Toktam from Morning English. Rasoul explains why learners need regular opportunities to use spoken English, even when they already know plenty of grammar and vocabulary. Gav and Em then discuss how teachers can build a new learner’s confidence before focusing on sounds that need work.

Try Gav’s British and American pronunciation quiz, then explore word stress, words whose stress changes between noun and verb forms, and the effect of a final silent e on words such as tap and tape. Em brings in words that sound alike but have different spellings or meanings. Toktam closes the episode with a short lesson on her, hair, here and hear.

How Do English Teachers Keep Developing? Carolina Cunha & Kamlesh Thakkar – S03E04 Mar 11, 2022
    Show notes

How do you keep growing as an English teacher once you’ve earned your qualifications? Can years of experience ever make you feel overqualified for the classroom?

Gav and Em welcome Brazil-based teacher and trainer Carolina Cunha. After years in language schools and further study, including the TKT and CELTA, Carolina felt stuck in a repetitive role. She explains how becoming a freelance teacher gave her room to design personalised lessons and rethink what success meant to her.

Gav and Em compare their own teaching comfort zones too. Em discusses moving online and researching unfamiliar industries for Business English lessons. Gav shares how he follows students’ interests and uses personalised questions to turn worksheets into conversations. They also explore workshops, lesson observations, five-minute mini-lessons and course design based on learners’ real jobs.

To finish, Kamlesh Thakkar explains the present simple through habits, facts and permanent situations.

How Can English Teachers Support Students Experiencing Grief and Loss? With Brittany Collins – S03E03 Feb 25, 2022
    Show notes

What should you say when a student tells you someone has died? How can English teachers support grieving learners without becoming counsellors?

In this episode of the How to English TEFL Podcast, Gav and Em discuss grief, bereavement and other forms of loss in the classroom.

Em reflects on times when learners have spoken about losing family members and pets, including an activity that unexpectedly reminded a child of his father’s death. Gav and Em consider whether teachers should ask questions, quietly express sympathy, leave space for the learner to continue or simply return to the lesson. They also ask whether correcting a learner’s English during an emotional conversation could feel insensitive.

Author and educator Brittany Collins introduces grief-responsive teaching and shares ideas from Learning from Loss: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Supporting Grieving Students.

Brittany explains how grief can affect concentration, memory, emotional regulation and behaviour. A grieving learner may become angry, withdrawn or unusually dependent on others. Rather than seeing these changes only as bad behaviour, teachers can consider the unmet needs behind them.

She suggests creating supportive classrooms through predictable routines, meaningful choices, caring relationships, free writing and carefully chosen reading activities. Learners should always be able to decide whether to discuss difficult experiences or choose an alternative task.

The episode ends with Cassandra Ormachea explaining the idiom “burning the candle at both ends”.

Content note: This episode discusses death, bereavement and grief. Teachers are not mental-health professionals, and learners needing specialist help should be directed towards appropriate support.

What Types of TEFL Teaching Jobs Are Available? With Kat from Teach Travel Tribe – S03E02 Feb 11, 2022
    Show notes

What types of TEFL teaching jobs are available, and how can you find the right role for you?

Gav and Em explore the varied world of teaching English as a foreign language. They begin by explaining the differences between TEFL, TESL and TESOL before discussing training, qualifications and ways to find trustworthy teaching opportunities.

Drawing on their own classroom experience, they compare working in government schools, private language schools and large international organisations. What are the benefits of joining a small school? Can a bigger company offer more support and independence? And what should you check before accepting a teaching job abroad?

You’ll also discover career paths beyond classroom teaching, including working with refugees, becoming a director of studies, creating teaching materials, proofreading, publishing and freelancing.

Special guest Kat from Teach Travel Tribe shares her journey through five countries and three continents. She explains how she progressed from teaching in a Thai primary school to working for a language school in Indonesia, managing an English department in Taiwan, opening a tutoring business in the Middle East and becoming a governess for a VIP family in Russia.

Finally, Reyhaneh and Rezvaneh join Teacher, Teach Me to explain the difference between will and going to.

How Can Teachers and Learners Return to English After a Break? – S03E01 Jan 28, 2022
    Show notes

How can teachers and learners regain their motivation after taking a break from English?

Gav and Em return for Season 3 with an honest conversation about going back to school and work after the holidays. They compare the excitement of seeing students again with the lethargy that can make the first few days difficult. They also consider whether learners return refreshed, lose momentum or decide they no longer need lessons.

Is taking a complete break from English beneficial? Gav and Em discuss how time away can help learners process what they have studied and give teachers space to reflect on their lessons. However, they also explore how longer breaks may affect progress and why many learners continue encountering English through films and television.

The conversation moves on to New Year’s resolutions, manageable goals and their own plans for more focused group lessons. Drawing on their classroom experience, Gav and Em discuss lesson structure, pace, preparation and the changing relationship between online and face-to-face teaching.

The episode also introduces Teacher, Teach Me, a new feature inviting teachers and learners to contribute a short, engaging language lesson. Gav begins with a practical explanation of used to, didn’t use to, get used to and be used to, using Em’s move from classroom teaching to online lessons as the context.

What Makes an English Lesson Memorable? Teachers & Learners – Music by Whizbusters – S02E19 Dec 24, 2021
    Show notes

What stays with you long after an English lesson ends?

For the Season 2 finale, Gav and Em invite nine teachers and learners to share memorable moments from inside and outside the classroom. Some are funny, some are moving, and all show how much the people in a lesson can matter.

LaDoris remembers helping a child master a difficult pronunciation sound. Cyndi shares the moment a learner realised she had begun thinking in English, while Taravat recalls a Halloween classroom surprise during a power cut. Monifa and Ivana reflect on the relationships and fresh perspectives that teaching brings.

Milena meets a returning learner who insists she cannot speak English—while speaking it. Una sees a student’s confidence grow so much that her young daughter wants to join the lesson. Wanda’s students create music and perform in English, and Helen describes a classroom disruption that changed how she thought about behaviour management.

Em shares why being welcomed into a student’s life means so much to her. Gav recalls the unlikely moment a word from his Business English lesson appeared in a student’s meeting. To close the show, Whizbusters perform their version of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

What Makes Teaching English Memorable? Classroom Stories - Music by Shaisan Devasia – S02E18 Dec 17, 2021
    Show notes

Which moments stay with English teachers and learners long after a lesson ends? In the first part of their end-of-year special, Gav and Em invite educators to share the classroom experiences they still remember.

Gav recalls a one-to-one student who trusted him with news of a planned marriage proposal. Vitor Hugo tells the story of a shy teenager who found the confidence to present a project to her school. Carla describes helping a student who had nearly given up on English pass her remaining subjects and graduate.

There are moments of connection, too: Barbara sees students lose themselves in singing together; Ely hears children use an expression they picked up months earlier; and Fatemeh remembers the teacher who inspired her own career. Hedreich Nichols, Mariana and Sanja share stories of student creativity, a successful job interview and learning to express personal beliefs in English.

Em finishes with a lesson from her first teaching job. With no plan and only a pack of letter cards, she asked her teenage students to invent a game. What they created changed how she thought about giving learners room to lead.
