Jody Hadlock - Lives of Diamond Bessie Apr 13, 2022
    Show notes

Pregnant out of wedlock, sixteen-year-old Annie Moore is sent to live at a convent for fallen women. When the nuns take her baby, Annie escapes, determined to find a way to be reunited with her daughter. But few rights or opportunities are available to a woman in the 1860s, and after failing to find a respectable job, Annie resorts to prostitution in order to survive.

As a highly sought-after demi-mondaine, Annie—now Bessie—garners many expensive gifts from her admirers, and eventually meets and marries the son of a wealthy jeweller. With her marriage, she believes her dream of returning to proper society has finally come true. She’s proven wrong when she suffers the ultimate betrayal at the hands of the man she thought would be her salvation. But Bessie doesn’t let her story end there.

Inspired by a true story and set amid the burgeoning women’s rights movement, The Lives of Diamond Bessie is a haunting tale of betrayal and redemption that explores whether seeking revenge is worth the price you might pay.

Robert Crawford - The River Never Speaks Apr 12, 2022
    Show notes

In 1999, 13 year-old Meghan McNamara was abducted from her home, her parents and younger brother brutally slain. The intense search for her would eventually dwindle down to a cold case and local legend and Meghan was presumed dead. Then five years later, an 18 year-old woman emerges from the Wisconsin woods, dazed, undernourished and announces she’s Meghan and doesn’t know what year it is. She tells the police where to find her captor. He is found and pleads guilty to the felonies.

She's ostensibly the only survivor in the Fox River series of murders and is given the mystique of The One That Got Away. Meghan struggles to put her life together and reinsert herself back into a world that had left her for dead. Laboring under a psychiatric malady she calls “voice deafness,” she can hear and understand words but all voices are indistinct and sound alike.

15 years later, she's a detective in the same small Wisconsin town in which she was raised and she's obsessed with the case that was supposedly solved when the alleged killer confessed. But when a single mother is murdered and her 12 year-old daughter goes missing, Meghan is more convinced than ever that the killer is still on the loose. And McNamara’s efforts are getting resistance not just from the real killer but also her own department that had arrested him and the DA's office that may have put away an innocent man for life.

Wayne Hoffman - The End of Her Mar 26, 2022
    Show notes

Who was behind the brutal murder of my great-grandmother? wondered Wayne Hoffman, a New York City-based journalist and novelist. The crime wasn’t just a family legend—it made headlines across Canada in 1913—but her killer had never been found. In The End of Her, Hoffman meticulously researches this century-old tragedy, while facing another: his mother’s decline from Alzheimer’s. Weaving back and forth between past and present, Hoffman invokes in dramatic detail the life and death of his immigrant great-grandmother in Winnipeg's North End, and his mother’s downward spiral. In the process, he discovers an extended family that has been scattered across thousands of miles for a hundred years.

Molly MacRae - Argyles and Arsenic Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

After 93 well-lived years, Violet MacAskill is ready to simplify her life. Her eccentric solution? She’ll throw a decanting and decluttering party at her family home—a Scottish Baronial manor near the seaside town of Inversgail, Scotland. Violet sets aside everything she wants or needs, then she invites her many friends in to sip sherry and help themselves to whatever they want from all that’s left.

Janet Marsh and Christine Robertson, two of the women who own Yon Bonnie Books in Inversgail, enjoy themselves at the party. Not everyone who attends has a good time, though. Wendy Erskine, director of the Inversgail museum, is found dead, and rumors swirl about food poisoning from a local food truck. Then Violet tells Constable Hobbs that a tin of rat poison is missing. And when Hobbs’ own grandmother comes under suspicion for murder, he enlists the women from Yon Bonnie Books, and the race is on to find the murderer.

But where do they begin? Are there clues in the “Shocking Stockings” exhibit at the museum? Will the antique scrapbook pasted full of trivia about arsenic and bygone poisoners offer a solution? Or does the answer lie closer to home—is one of Violet’s friends truly toxic? Poisonous games are afoot in Inversgail and the women of Yon Bonnie Books are playing to win.

    Robert J. Sawyer - Oppenheimer Alternative Mar 18, 2022
    Show notes

On the 75th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb, Hugo and Nebula-winning author Robert J. Sawyer takes us back in time to revisit history…with a twist.

While J. Robert Oppenheimer and his Manhattan Project team struggle to develop the A-bomb, Edward Teller wants something even more devastating: a bomb based on nuclear fusion―the mechanism that powers the sun.

Teller’s research leads to a terrifying discovery: by the year 2030, the sun will eject its outermost layer, destroying the entire inner solar system―including Earth.

As the war ends with the use of fission bombs against Japan, Oppenheimer's team, plus Albert Einstein and Wernher von Braun, stay together―the greatest scientific geniuses from the last century racing against time to save our future.

Meticulously researched and replete with real-life characters and events, The Oppenheimer Alternative is a breathtaking adventure through both real and alternate history.
