    Zombeavers (2014) Feb 26, 2020
    Show notes

In honor of Trace's 31st birthday, we're closing out February with a discussion of one of his favorite movies: Zombeavers! That's right, a movie that gifts us John Mayer in his feature film debut and one of the most salacious games of "Would You Rather" ever committed to film sends Trace into a non-stop flurry of giggle fits throughout the entire episode.

Join us as we discuss this 77-minute-long film that features a plethora of beaver puns, Millennials scissoring each other to Lady Gaga, were-zombeaver people (and bears) and some very impressive zombeaver puppets. It's about as ridiculous (and entertaining!) as it sounds.

Also up for discussion: severe penile trauma, a crazy faux Oscar campaign, a Frank Sinatra-style theme song and a delightful animated opening credits sequence!

Look, this should be a one-joke movie that doesn't work, but it's actually a film with lots of jokes and it does work! That this admittedly juvenile film is non-homophobic and has equal amounts of nudity between its male and female characters is just an added bonus! If you've never seen it: give it a chance!

    Martyrs (2008) Feb 19, 2020
    Show notes

You asked for it (well, at least one of you did), and so we are finally covering the listeners' choice that was selected from our 2019 Listener Survey! That's right, we're discussing Pascal Laugier's controversial 2008 film Martyrs (aka the most anti-spoiler film ever made)! Big thanks to listener Brian Conmy for helping us pull the trigger on covering this masterful and deeply upsetting film.

Major trigger warnings for anyone who has never seen Martyrs, because this film is one of the most disturbing films ever made. That's not hyperbole!

Join us as we discuss what might be the most extreme example of white privilege ever put on screen (seriously, these people are so rich that they seemingly have all the time in the world to torture young women just so they can find out what happens after we die) and assign a few different readings to the film, including a very positive queer reading that might turn a few people around on it.

We'll also try to answer questions that have followed the film since its 2008 release, including but not limited to: Is it torture porn? Is it misogynistic? Does it have a purpose? Why would someone make this endurance test of a film?

Oh! And as an added bonus, both of us secretly watched the 2015 American remake without telling the other one, so we spend a little bit of time comparing the two films (hint: the original is better).

Lastly, here are all of the articles we reference in the episode:

Single White Female (1992) feat. Double A Horror Highway Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

We're kicking off Women in Horror Month with a confusing and frankly boring erotic thriller about a threatening lesbian roommate, written by a gay man, for straight male audiences. Joining us for the ride are the two Amys (Kasio and Ketchum) of Double A Horror Highway, who help to unpack the film's mushroom cut hairstyles, portable computing devices and why neither Bridget Fonda or Jennifer Jason Leigh's characters own any furniture.

Also up for discussion: un-sexy sex clubs, showing (but not using) the incinerator, whether Heddy is a true lesbian or mentally ill (or a mentally ill lesbian) and speculation about why the film tries to redeem every terrible character, including the rapist played by Stephen Tobolowsky!

So little of Single White Female makes sense that we struggled to retain even the most basic plot points. Toss this film out the window like a puppy!

    Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) Feb 05, 2020
    Show notes

Anniversary month is dead! Long live Birthday month!

To get the ball rolling, Joe has selected a terrible (read: great) film from his beloved Hellraiser franchise. Of course he opted for the fourth film - the one in space! - directed by none other than fake DGA moniker Alan Smithee (actually FX master Kevin Yagher).

Folks, we have yet another super complicated production timeline, including a rumoured 112 min cut, multiple directors and reshoots that completely alter the film's meaning. And yet...there's still so much fascinating stuff mixed in with the hot garbage, including a compelling battle of the sexes, a bizarre (immediately discarded) trans mention and an actress that Trace is CONVINCED is secretly Noomi Rapace.

Strap in for Pinhead quips, the return of Meryl (Kim Myers) and Joe's impassioned defence of the film and, by extension, the Hellraiser franchise. It's a birthday miracle!

The Boy Next Door (2015) feat. Matt Donato Jan 29, 2020
    Show notes

Grab your first edition copy of The Iliad, because we're closing out our anniversary month by covering Rob Cohen's (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) The Boy Next Door, an erotic thriller that is neither erotic nor thrilling! Joining us for this riff-fest is noted The Boy Next Door defender (and fellow Bloody Disgusting columnist) Matt Donato, and he's brought along a raw chicken for all of us to share!

Join us as we commend Lopez for using her own clothes to cut down on production costs, but lament how the film completely wastes Kristin Chenoweth (despite her awesome "Can I Speak to Your Manager?" haircut).

Also on the docket: we try to figure out why people hate Lopez and why all of the male characters in the film going through crazy mood swings. Trace goes to bat for one of the film's deleted scenes, Joe is confused by the concept of a penis purse and Matt can't get over all of the references to The Wiz.

Finally, we attempt to list off the multitude of Chekhov's items in the film (EpiPen, Engine, cookies, etc.).

All Cheerleaders Die (2013) feat. PRIMO the ALIEN Jan 22, 2020
    Show notes

Anniversary month continues as the boys head back to high school, bitches! Along with special guest PRIMO the ALIEN, we're digging into co-directors Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson's remake of their own film, which is itself a franchise non-starter (Part One, you say? Show us the receipts!)

Despite a killer opening, this film certainly did not "blue our balls" with its mish-mash of tones, weird pacing and poor editing. Thankfully there's jokes to be made about butt plugs, vagina freezers and Trace's improv skills.

Plus: is this film part of the Eli Roth dude bro school of lesbianic filmmaking, or is it subverting the male gaze and offering up a pro-queer reading? We're honestly not sure!

    Hostel: Part II (2007) Jan 15, 2020
    Show notes

The boys are making a return trip to Slovakia to discuss a film that no one wanted to guest on! That's right, they're discussing Eli Roth's controversial and (dare they say it?) feminist sequel Hostel: Part II!

Join them as they discuss the rapid decline of the torture porn sub-genre between 2006 and 2007, the accusations of misogyny lodged against the film, and Roth's progressive decision to make the protagonist of his sequel a lesbian (whom he doesn't objectify!) while casting out-and-proud lesbian Heather Matarazzo as the character who gets the film's most brutal death (in a scene that got the film banned in several countries).

Also, Trace tries to come up with a synonym for the word "castration," Joe gives a brief oral history of the word "cunt" and they both try to figure out why Jordan Ladd needs so much sleep.
