Raw (2016) feat. Dede Crimmins Jul 07, 2021
    Show notes

Pull that gravy-soaked cafeteria meat patty out of your pocket and get ready for a cannibalistic coming-of-age tale because we're doing a deep dive into Julia Ducournau's debut film Raw! Joining us for the discussion is film critic Dede Crimmins (just in time for her birthday today!).

Tag along as we endure what looks like one of the most intense and horrific hazing rituals ever put on film before lamenting the film's unfortunate vomit bag festival buzz that no doubt set up unrealistic expectations for viewers. We'll then pick apart the many, many metaphors contained within the film.

We'll also share a plethora of anecdotes, including but not limited to: bedbug experiences, public urination, hair-chewing, mirror-fucking, bikini waxes and Ducournau's secret trick to directing a dance scene

Plus, are the parents in the film the worst film parents ever? Is 7-Eleven pizza secretly amazing? And does Trace hate women? Tune in and find out!

Micro Queers: Play. Pause. Kill. (2020) Jul 02, 2021
    Show notes

This week on Micro Queers, we're discussing David Teixeira's Play. Pause. Kill (click the link to view the 13-minute short), in which a woman (Anasthasia Hilda) spends her Saturday off at home trying to write a new screenplay. She keeps receiving messages from H (Lucas Dutilleul) before finally succumbing to his charm and inviting him over. After all, we all need some contact now and then, right?

Sorority Row (2009) feat. Adrian Rodriguez Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

It's Theta Pi time, bitches! We're throwing a massive party to celebrate Stewart Handler's 2009 slasher comedy Sorority Row and along for all of the modified tire iron fun is Adrian Rodriguez of the Slash Her podcast, who loves the film as much as Trace.

Joe notoriously hated the film 4 years ago (Trace has the receipts!), but has come around on it. Still, expect plenty of debate about the balance between comedy and horror, particularly when it comes to the killer's reveal & motivation. We also worship at the altar of Jessica (Leah Pipes), comment on the film's very non-PC approach to sisterhood and sexual assault, and theorise why audiences hate Rumer Willis' Ellie.

Plus: why Carrie Fisher should have been the star, Adrian's Halloween QVC obsession and Joe elaborates why Chugs is the best

    Show notes

Here's a sneak peek at our all new full-length Patreon bonus episode on Ilana Glazer and John Lee's pregnancy thriller, False Positive. It's a bit of a mixed bag that we wish had gone for it a little harder, despite being really visually captivating.

Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954) Jun 23, 2021
    Show notes

Pray you didn't forget your bug spray, because we're heading deep into the Amazon to hang with our favorite queer villain the Gill-Man in Jack Arnold's contribution to the Universal monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954)!

Join us as we do an in-depth production history of this classic film before going on a brief tour of what it was like to be queer in the '50s (hint: it wasn't fun!). We'll then analyze the obviously queer relationship between Mark (Richard Denning) and David (Richard Carlson) while giving a queer reading to the Gill-Man himself.

Plus, a rundown of the many cancelled remakes, ass-squeezing swimsuits, underwater facials with creamy white goo and did Anaconda just completely rip off this movie (we have the receipts!)?

    Show notes

This week on Micro Queers, we're discussing Jackie Perez's Dryer Lint (click the link to view the 10-minute short), in which a man (Donzell Lewis) is obsessed with the disappearance of his socks after a colleague (Bella Silverstein) tells him the story of the sock monster.

Bones (2001) feat. Carolyn Mauricette Jun 16, 2021
    Show notes

Prep your dogg jokes and don't go into the derelict old house because we're checking out Ernest R Dickerson's 2001 blaxploitation / slasher / Italian Gothic horror film Bones. Joining us is Carolyn Mauricette, Development Coordinator & Programmer of the Blood In The Snow film festival, who has a deep affection for both Pam Grier and Snoop Dogg.

This episode is, first and foremost, an apology for sleeping on the film, which is a ton of fun. We heap praise on Dickerson's direction, the film's litany of homages and its many visually stunning sequences. Bones has characters we actually care about, doesn't make a big deal about a mixed race relationship and invests a ton of screen time on Snoop & Grier's romance that other films would have cut out.

Plus: the agelessness of Grier and Bianca Lawson, undead decapitated heads, the film's questionable marketing, the lack of studio confidence in black horror and, finally, Carolyn's hilarious edible story.

Excision (2012) feat. Wren Crain Jun 09, 2021
    Show notes

Prep your dream fantasies and your give no fuck attitude because we're checking out Richard Bates Jr's Excision (2012). Joining us to talk about Traci Lords and AnnaLynne McCord's powerhouse performances is Transploitation author and Sick Sad Monsters co-host Wren Crain, who contributes a candid and personal reading about mental illness in the film. CW: Necrophilia, Abortion

Up for discussion: why McCord's Pauline is a queer icon, the film's rude and crude comedy (hint: it's tied to abjection!), and age appropriate crushes on Jeremy Sumpter.

Plus: comparisons to May and Ginger Snaps, tangents about Gilmore Girls AND Monster-In-Law (?!), another sexually charged locker room scene and *a lot* of feelings about the ending.

Reading: Matheney, Emily. The Monstrous-Feminine and the Politics of Trash in the Film Excision. MA Thesis
