    Witches' Hollow Dec 27, 2020
    Show notes

The plot involves the narrator, a teacher at a country school outside of Arkham, encountering a strange pupil, Andrew Potter, who is smart but has no desire to advance to a higher grade. He is left alone and rather feared by the other pupils. When the narrator asks Andrew if he wants to advance in school, he says the doesn’t require him to go to high school. The narrator then asks to visit Andrew’s parents about this. During the visit, the narrator finds a farmstead of menace, an obese mother, an older sister, and a father who says no to Andrew attending school beyond the legal requirement. Troubled by the Mr. Potter’s attitude and troubled by what he saw and sensed at the farm, the narrator goes to visit a newspaper editor, and we get the predictable chain of events. The editor refers him to Miskatonic University and the Necronomicon. A professor sees him reading it, and the narrator tells him of the tale of Andrew. From there, the professor tells him that a wizard Potter inhabited the farm until he died and the Potters moved to it from Michigan. They were pleasant at first but changed. The next thing you know we have stones bearing the “Seal of R’lyeh” and a plan to solve things by using them as amulets of protection for the narrator and to touch one to Andrew. When that’s done, the boy goes into a fit, and the narrator takes him to the professor’s house. They then go to the schoolhouse to wait for the inevitable attack by the Potters. The stones of R’lyeh are used against father and sister. However, they don’t have the intended effect. The professor thought the focus of evil, which turns out to be a seeming case of possession, was Mr. Potter. It turns out it’s the mother. The Potter house is sealed off with the stones of R’lyeh and set on fire.

A strange creature is seen leaving the mother’s body, an “amorphous mass . . . tentacled, shimmering, with a cold intelligence and a physical coldness”. Her body shrinks, but she lives, and a black bolt of smoke shoots from the house into the sky in a way reminiscent of the climax of Lovecraft’s “The Colour Out of Space”.

The Horror At Red Hook Dec 12, 2020
    Show notes

The story begins with Detective Malone describing an on-duty incident in Red Hook Brooklyn that gave him a phobia of large buildings. Back-tracking to where it all began, the Brooklyn waterfront slum Red Hook is described in detail, with its gangs and crime, and hinting at an occult underbelly. The "case of Robert Suydam" is then told to be the driving force behind Malone's federally ordered involvement at Red Hook. Suydam's demeanor changes suddenly. Known as a shabby recluse, he is seen around town looking younger and more radiant. News arrives of his engagement to a well-to-do woman, while, at the same time, there is an increase in local kidnappings. A police raid, involving Malone, uncovers nothing useful from Suydam's Red Hook flat save a few strange inscriptions. After Suydam's wedding, he and his bride leave on a ship. Aboard, a scream is heard and, when the crew enter Suydam's stateroom, they find him and his wife dead, with claw-marks on his wife's body. Later, some strange men from another ship come on board and lay claim to Suydam's body.

Malone enters Suydam's flat to see what he can find. In the basement, he comes across a door that breaks open and sucks him inside, revealing a hellish landscape. He witnesses human sacrifices and a ritual that reanimates Suydam's corpse. Malone is found in the basement of Suydam's flat, which has caved in inexplicably above him, killing everyone else inside. The tunnels and chambers uncovered in the raids are filled in and cemented, though, as Malone recounts, the threat in Red Hook subtly re-emerges.

Under the Pyramids Dec 03, 2020
    Show notes

After being kidnapped by a local tour guide who bears a striking resemblance to an ancient pharaoh, Harold Houdini is thrown in a deep pit next to the Great Sphinx. Whilst trying to break free, he happens across a large cave where he encounters the ancient god and inspiration for the Sphinx. Written in collaboration with Harry Houdini in February 1924, "Under the Pyramids" is an interesting short story from master of the form H. P. Lovecraft not to be missed by fans and collectors of his seminal work.
