A Pod of Their Own, Episode 101: Five wins and three buckets of garbage Sep 08, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we begin by discussing what feels like at LEAST a month’s worth of Mets crammed into one week—soon after Javy Báez’s post “thumbs down” storybook ending, the Mets went on a winning streak. But amidst all of that, acting GM Zack Scott was arrested and charged with a DUI and subsequently placed on administrative leave by the Mets.

In his media availability yesterday, Sandy Alderson characterized all of the “unbecoming” behavior on the part of Mets front office personnel as “unrelated” incidents, not necessarily indicative of a single flaw in the Mets’ hiring process. We discuss the wrongheadedness of this characterization and the fact that even when Alderson knew about bad behavior on the part of his employees in the past, he chose not to act.

We also talk about Alderson’s update on Jacob deGrom’s injury, in which apparently deGrom’s elbow magically healed itself!

In our baseball segment this week, we talk about speculation around the industry that Trevor Bauer will be suspended for “at least one year” by the league under its domestic violence policy, which would at least match the longest suspension ever handed down under the policy.

We also discuss an ill-advised tweet on the part of former MLB (and Mets) reliever Kyle Farnsworth about Trey Mancini and how it reflects the toxic masculinity ubiquitous in the game.

A reminder that Dollars4Dingers has begun! You can make your pledge here.

Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! And you can find us on the Stitcher app, Spotify, or listen wherever you get podcasts.

With a few weeks left in the minor league season, the team takes a look at each affiliate and plots a course for them for the rest of 2021.

Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), Episode 76: Crisis, Catharsis, Crisis, Repeat Sep 02, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), the new/old favorite from Amazin’ Avenue editors Chris McShane and Brian Salvatore.

When Brian and Chris last podcasted, things looked incredibly different for the Mets than they did when they recorded on Wednesday night. After a four-game winning streak (three if you’re being pedantic and don’t consider the suspended game victory as part of the win streak), the Mets looked poised to capitalize on a big win. The ‘thumbs’ scandal was behind them, and despite a rainout, things looked sunnier than they have in weeks.

And then, Interim General Manager Zack Scott was arrested for a DUI early on Wednesday morning, and the reality of the Mets’ management situation came back into clear display. Chris and Brian attempt to make sense of all of this, how it will affect this season and who, if any, of these folks will be around in 2022.

    Chris’s Music Pick:

    Steve Gunn - Other You

    Brian’s Music Pick:

    The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies

    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we begin by discussing the Mets’ “thumbs down” gesture and the ensuing media circus and what it says about the relationship between players and fans.

Next, we tell our Mets origin stories—how we all became Mets fans, how we started at Amazin’ Avenue, and the story of how the podcast was born.

Then, we answer questions from our listeners about the future of the Mets, our ideal Citi Field experience, favorite away ballparks, and more.

Finally, we launch #Dollars4Dingers2021! Our in-person #Dollars4Dingers raffle event will be on September 25th at 5:00pm at Katch in Astoria, Queens. We hope to see you all there! In the meantime, we will be raising money to benefit the National Domestic Violence Hotline for every Mets home run hit from September 3 through the end of the season on October 3. You can make your #Dollars4Dingers2021 pledge here.

We wrap things up like we always do with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

UnforMETable, Episode 67: Randy Milligan Aug 31, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past.

Randy Milligan spent parts of seven seasons working his way up through the Mets minor league system. Buried on the depth chart behind the powerful, star-studded 1980s Mets, Milligan had an MVP season in AAA Tidewater and was a personal favorite of a very young Norfolk child named David Wright.

Milligan would go on to have a solid and unappreciated MLB career, toiling mostly for some poor teams and flashing one particular skill—an incredible batting eye—that wasn’t quite as appreciated in the pre-Moneyball era.

Milligan would make his most important contribution to the Mets’ organization after his playing days were over, as his path would intersect again with Wright when Milligan became the scout to help sign Wright for the Mets.

If you’ve got an idea for a player to be featured on UnforMETable, let us know in the comments.

Make sure to follow Rob on Twitter (@WolffRR), and you can now follow the show, too (@unformetable). Tune in next week for another tale from the Mets’ past.

From Complex To Queens, Episode 131: The future’s so bright, we need to wear rose colored shades (Part 2) Aug 30, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to From Complex to Queens, the Amazin’ Avenue podcast focusing on the Mets’ minor league system.

Starting things off, Steve discusses how the Mets’ minor league system did last week.

After, following up on our conversation from Episode 130, the team takes a look at a few specific players and highlights in detail how they have improved in 2021 and how those improvements will cause them to be more highly ranked on our 2022 Top 25 Mets Prospect list.

Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), Episode 75: Celebrating 36 and Lamenting 2021 Aug 26, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), the new/old favorite from Amazin’ Avenue editors Chris McShane and Brian Salvatore.

Things have not looked good for the Mets all month, and things continue to be bleak around the team. Brian and Chris (unsuccessfully) search for reasons for optimism, beyond players returning from the IL, before, essentially, declaring the season lost. Prove us wrong, Mets!

The topic of Jerry Koosman’s long overdue number retirement comes up, and the question of what other number(s) the Mets should retire is posed.

    Chris’s Music Pick:

Mavis Staples - Live in London

    Brian’s Music Pick:

    The Durutti Column - LC

A Pod of Their Own, Episode 99: Forget meaningful. Can we get watchable games in September? Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we begin by talking about the Mets’ horrible West Coast road trip, which furthered their demise and whether there is any reason at all for optimism now that Javy Báez and Francisco Lindor are back in the lineup.

Next, we have a discussion about retired numbers. Should the Mets be more inclusive when it comes to number retirement? And how should off the field matters factor into the decision when it comes to some members of the 1986 team?

On our baseball segment this week, we talk about the outcome of Trevor Bauer’s hearing and what might happen moving forward. We also point out that the Mets have “spoken with” the founder of Driveline Baseball, which infamously counts Bauer and Luke Heimlich among its clients.

Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

UnforMETable, Episode 66: Jack Fisher Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past.

Jack Fisher had already established a reputation as a workhorse before the Mets acquired him in a special draft for the recent expansion teams prior to the 1964 season. His tenure in Baltimore was solid, even if he is primarily remembered there for surrendering historic home runs to Ted Williams and Roger Maris.

With the Mets, Fisher would make 133 starts over four seasons—most notably taking the hill and throwing the first pitch in Shea Stadium history. Fisher’s tenure as a Met would draw to a close as the Mets young rotation featuring Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman would begin to take shape.

If you’ve got an idea for a player to be featured on UnforMETable, let us know in the comments.

Make sure to follow Rob on Twitter (@WolffRR), and you can now follow the show, too (@unformetable). Tune in next week for another tale from the Mets’ past.
