Has the Music Industry Jaded Hip Hop Artists? Sep 15, 2017
    Show notes

In an interview on DJ Booth about a year ago (http://djbooth.net/news/entry/2016-09-27-phonte-interview), Phonte discussed how his time in the industry really ruined his aspirations as a rapper and the advice he would give to younger artists tryingt to make a name for themselves in this hip hop thing. We dive into many of his comments and explore how Phonte's experience in the industry can (or does) impact the future of other hip hop artists. In addition, there's an unexpected visit from the lady of the house. Be sure to comment and let us know your thoughts. And if you want to watch this episode, you can cath it over at https://youtu.be/cPAK1r8N3o4. Enjoy!

    Show notes

On this one, we start by discussing some of the most compelling episodes from Viceland's "The Therapist," where prominent hip hop figures sit down for therapy with a licensed professional. This of course moves into a larger discussion about how therapy is viewed in hip hop in general and what impact this show might have on hip hop as a whole. So press play and let us know your thoughts on any of the topics discussed. And if you prefer, you can also watch this episode on YouTube at https://youtu.be/cpaweJX0dmE.

    4:44 Album Review Jul 25, 2017
    Show notes

Yes, we know it's been out for a minute now. But if you follow the podcast, you know we still had to do the review and post it because, between the three of us, feelings about Jay-Z span everywhere from almost no respect (Milan), to appreciation (Dev), to one of the greatest of all time (Landon). This was definitely a different Jay we got on this album, so we had to discuss. We also had our friend and special guest, Mike Waller, join us for this one, so it was a fun one to record. Be sure to comment and let us know what your thoughts are on the album. Enjoy!

Does Battle Rapping Lower the Standard for MCs? Jun 06, 2017
    Show notes

On this episode, we have two guests: longtime friend to the podcast David Johnson and first time guest,
Dev's MC, Lars Phontaine. Lars actually brought this topic to us and wanted to discuss, so here it is! And you know Dave has to join anytime we talk battle raps. Basically, we discuss whether or not the skill of MCing is dimished due to the battle rap scene. In typical hip hop debate fashion, we end up talking about other stuff, but that's the main focus. Listen and then make sure you give us your opinion in the comments section. Pull up a chain and join us at HHRT!

Is Longevity Overrated? Apr 25, 2017
    Show notes

People love to use longevity as one of the main reasons for claiming somebody is one of the greatest rappers all time. It's also used to justify not putting younger artists in the conversation. But in this episode, we question whether or not longevity is often overrated. Not that it shouldn't be factored in at all, but do we overstate how important it is when so many artists' legacy are really based on their first 2-3 albums? We discuss here, but we also want to hear from you! So press play, but don't forget to comment with your thgouths, as well.

Let us know if you feel Kendrick has cracked the top 10 and what it would take for him to become the GOAT.

DAMN Album Review (Pt. 1) Apr 15, 2017
    Show notes

Here's our initial review of Kendrick's latest work. This got us talking so much, we had to break it up into two parts. In this, we focus mainly on the album, but then vere into ranking him among the greats. Part 2 is the extension of that. Press play and be sure to share your thoughts on the album that has everybody talking.
