What Did Kouri Richins' Face Reveal While Her Kids Described Their Fear? Jul 12, 2026
    Show notes

The judge asked for no outward reactions. Kouri Richins couldn't manage four minutes before the faces started. This look back, with psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, reads what those visible reactions revealed about the person behind the performance during her sentencing.

The children — all under fourteen — described locked doors, threats against their pets, and a mother they no longer call "mom." Every one of them asked the judge to put her away for good. And through it, Kouri looked annoyed. Scott breaks down what that contempt and eye-rolling actually signal. As Eric's sister Amy described having urged her brother to leave, Kouri was seen mouthing "what?" to her attorneys and making faces. As her own family rose to defend her, the tears arrived. Scott reads that shift — the empathy that switches on only for her own suffering.

Then the boys spoke through their counselors. The youngest said hearing his mother's name makes him feel "hateful and ashamed." The middle son, prosecutors noted, was a material witness whose account contradicted hers about that night. The oldest wants her locked away because he's afraid she'll come for them. And the woman convicted of poisoning their father with roughly five times a lethal dose of fentanyl looked, by Scott's read, merely inconvenienced. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting. This is behavioral analysis from a licensed psychotherapist who has spent decades studying how people reveal themselves under pressure — framed as professional insight, not a diagnosis.

Can Victoria Heuermann's Forgiveness Of Rex Heuremann Coexist With The Truth? Jul 12, 2026
    Show notes

Victoria Heuermann sat across from her father in a jailhouse room, heard him admit to killing eight women in the house where she grew up, and forgave him on the spot. She asked if he ever thought about her while he was doing it. He said no — the two worlds never crossed. This look back, with psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, examines what that exchange reveals about both the daughter and the father.

Scott breaks down what happens psychologically to a child who discovers their parent is a serial killer — how the brain rewrites safe memories when the home turns out to be a crime scene, what Victoria's immediate forgiveness actually represents, and whether her statement that her father was a loving dad and a serial killer can coexist as truth or whether it's a form of the same compartmentalization that allowed Rex to kill. The documentary showed a young woman whose self-worth has been destroyed, who has cycled between depression and anger since the arrest, and who has questioned whether she should even be here.

Scott also examines what the documentary revealed about Rex himself — the sessions where he described a four-day cycle refined over years, disposals he timed with a stopwatch, and a disconnect between the person reviewing crime scene photos in his cell and the person who created them. FBI profiler John Douglas compared him to BTK. The question Scott keeps returning to: is Rex still controlling the narrative even in confession — and is Victoria's forgiveness another thing he's shaping from behind bars? Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders and admitted to an eighth. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.

What Barry Morphew Kept Hidden in His Arizona Safe Jul 11, 2026
    Show notes

Barry Morphew kept more than just cash and paperwork in his safe. When investigators searched it, they found an AR-15 and a silencer, sitting alongside the ordinary contents of a man who insists he had nothing to hide. It's one detail among several that prosecutors say points to a defendant who spent years preparing for exactly this moment. Suzanne Morphew's remains were recovered from a shallow grave near Moffat, Colorado, and an autopsy found a wildlife tranquilizer known as BAM in her bone marrow, a substance investigators say only one private citizen in that part of the state had legal access to at the time: Barry Morphew. After the first case against him fell apart and the original prosecutor was disbarred, Barry relocated to Cave Creek, Arizona, and lived under aliases that even the woman he was with didn't see through until five days before his arrest. He was eventually re-indicted, extradited, and released on three million dollars bond, and pleaded not guilty a second time to first-degree murder. Two weeks later, he allegedly tried to have Suzanne's remains cremated, a move prosecutors caught and stopped with almost no time left on the clock. This episode walks through the safe, the tranquilizer, and the timeline prosecutors have built connecting all of it, alongside the honest counterargument the defense is expected to raise about circumstantial evidence and access. Jury selection begins October 13 in Alamosa, and Suzanne's family, still in Indiana, is finally getting close to a trial six years in the making. He's pleaded not guilty and remains presumed innocent under the law, but the physical evidence stacking up in that safe and in that bone marrow report is what a jury will finally get to weigh. Decide for yourself what the evidence adds up to, and whether the timing of it all still looks like coincidence.

Why Did It Take A Year Between Celeste's Disappearance And D4VD's Arrest? Jul 11, 2026
    Show notes

Celeste Rivas Hernandez was reported missing in 2024. Her remains were found in September 2025. David Anthony Burke wasn't arrested until April 2026. Three grand juries heard testimony. The autopsy sat sealed for months. This look back takes your listener questions to retired FBI Behavioral Analysis Chief Robin Dreeke and asks the question everyone keeps coming back to: why did it take so long?

Dreeke walks through what the timeline reveals about how investigations of this complexity actually move — the condition of the remains that made determining cause of death extraordinarily difficult, the sealed medical examiner's report held under a security hold LAPD initiated over the ME's own objection, the forty terabytes of digital evidence reportedly recovered from Burke's devices, and the witnesses who fled testimony or had to be compelled to appear. He addresses the listener questions you've been sending: who failed this child, what does the pattern of three grand juries without an indictment tell us, and what does a case built on this volume of sealed evidence say about what prosecutors may still be holding.

The segment also examines the gap between what Burke's circle reportedly believed — that Celeste was an adult — and the documented reality of a fourteen-year-old who had been reported missing three times and hadn't been in school for a year. Burke faces first-degree murder with special circumstances, additional charges related to the victim's age, and a count related to the condition of her remains. He has pleaded not guilty. His defense team says the evidence will show he did not cause her death. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.

Alex Murdaugh's Shirt Evidence Wasn't What Jurors Were Told Jul 11, 2026
    Show notes

Alex Murdaugh's defense told a South Carolina judge that the accounts from first responders who reached the Moselle property the night Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed don't agree with each other. Attorney Dick Harpootlian raised the discrepancy directly with Judge Debra McCaslin at a hearing that also set the retrial date for April 5, 2027. Harpootlian told the court the defense has received tips from people claiming to have information about who else may have been at the property, forwarded those tips to SLED, and still doesn't know whether investigators followed up on any of them. The hearing wasn't just about witnesses. The defense also pushed to have unknown male DNA, found under Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and never fully analyzed, sent to Othram, the forensic genealogy lab behind the identification of Bryan Kohberger. Attorney Jim Griffin argued the technology required to trace that DNA wasn't available when SLED first collected it and exists now. Prosecutors, for their part, say the state is ready to try the case again, and Attorney General Alan Wilson hasn't taken the death penalty off the table for a man already serving multiple life sentences. Judge McCaslin has made her position on delays clear, and the next hearing is already locked in for August 14. This episode breaks down the first-responder discrepancies motion, the DNA motion, and the wrongful-conviction case the defense keeps invoking as a warning about what happens when forensic evidence isn't fully tested. Both sides are fighting over what jurors will and won't hear, and the outcome could shape the entire retrial before it even starts. This walks through every motion on the docket, who filed it, and what each side is banking on to win.

Why Can't The Reiner Siblings Heal Until This Trial Ends? Jul 11, 2026
    Show notes

There's a trap waiting for the Reiner siblings, and it's the same one that catches almost every family of a victim: the belief that healing can't begin until the case is over. This look back examines why that belief is so powerful — and why, for Jake, Romy, and Tracy, it may be the very thing keeping their lives on pause.

First, where things stood at the time of our reporting. The three siblings carry a role almost no family ever holds together: primary mourners, next of kin with legal standing, and family of the accused, all at once. Sources say they've cut their brother off entirely. Sources say they oppose the harshest penalty, though experts note a family's input is meaningful without being controlling. Years of hearings and testimony stretch ahead of them.

Then the harder question. We walk through what the research and lived experience of victims' families actually show: that the verdict, when it finally lands, often changes far less than people expect. A conviction wouldn't bring their parents back. A finding of not responsible by reason of mental illness wouldn't either. Understanding the full clinical picture — the illness, the history, the pathology — doesn't obligate anyone to be okay with what was done. This segment makes a careful, compassionate case that peace isn't something the court hands down. It's something the people left behind have to build for themselves, with or without resolution.

Heuermann's Family Heard THIS From an Impostor Jul 11, 2026
    Show notes

Asa and Victoria sat in the room while Rex Heuermann confessed to eight murders. The woman running those sessions, Allison Winter, is now the one facing prison time, charged with practicing as a clinical social worker without a license for nearly three years. Legal analyst Eric Faddis returns to dig into whether that detail gives Heuermann's defense a real opening, starting with the theory that his guilty plea itself may have been built on a fraudulent foundation.

Faddis walks through the privilege question everyone's been asking: does confidentiality still protect a conversation with someone who wasn't legally a therapist? He breaks down both sides of that fight and what it could mean if Heuermann's team tries to challenge the plea on appeal.

Then we turn to the D4VD case, where a new Hulu documentary and a fresh status conference collided in the death of fourteen-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Faddis explains why the documentary's on-camera interviews with an LAPD detective and the district attorney could become a serious liability during cross-examination, and why the defense may argue the case has already been tried publicly before it ever reaches a jury. We also cover the purchase history prosecutors have flagged and what it suggests about how many people were involved, with the preliminary hearing coming up on the twenty-first.

Three cases, three legal fights, all colliding on the same day. We break down every angle with Eric.

What D4VD Allegedly Had On His Phone Jul 10, 2026
    Show notes

A new Hulu documentary just dropped on the D4VD case, and it's raising as many questions about the investigators as it is about the singer charged in fourteen-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez's death. Legal analyst Eric Faddis joins us to unpack what came out at the latest status conference, why the documentary could complicate jury selection, and whether the defense can use its aggressive framing to their advantage.

We start with the publicity problem. Faddis explains why the defense may argue this case has already been tried in the court of public opinion, and why moving the trial out of California could genuinely be on the table. Then we get into the documentary's most striking choice: it features an LAPD detective and the district attorney speaking on camera, seemingly without any hedge or qualifier, about evidence that hasn't yet been tested in court. Faddis breaks down why that kind of certainty could become a serious liability for the prosecution during cross-examination.

We also talk through the purchase history prosecutors have pointed to, chainsaws, a burn box, bags, and why Faddis believes it strongly suggests more than one person was involved. And we dig into the evidence reportedly found on D4VD's phone, which Faddis calls some of the most damaging material in the case if it holds up. With the preliminary hearing set for the twenty-first, we look at what happens if the defense wins there, and what happens if they don't.

Heuermann's Family Heard THIS From an Impostor Jul 10, 2026
    Show notes

Asa and Victoria sat in the room while Rex Heuermann confessed to eight murders. The woman guiding those family sessions, Allison Winter, is now the one facing prison time for allegedly running the whole arrangement without a valid license. We bring back legal analyst Eric Faddis to dig deeper into what this means, starting with a theory that could actually matter on appeal: did Heuermann plead guilty specifically to protect his family from having to testify about what he confessed, and if that confession came out of a deceptive setup, does the reasoning behind his plea collapse.

From there we get into the privilege fight everyone's been asking about. Does confidentiality still cover conversations with someone who wasn't legally a therapist? Faddis breaks down how this could play out in court, government prosecutors likely arguing the protection only applies to real clinicians, defense attorneys countering that it protects the patient's expectation of privacy regardless of who was sitting across from them. We also tackle the HIPAA question directly, and whether any of these sessions could now be treated as fair game for investigators.

Then there's the fruit of the poisonous tree question, and why Faddis thinks it likely doesn't apply here since Winter was never acting on the government's behalf. This is one of those side stories that keeps threatening to reshape the entire case, and we walk through every angle of it.

Heuermann's Counselor Heard THIS Before His Confession Jul 10, 2026
    Show notes

Rex Heuermann confessed privately to his own family in a room where an unlicensed therapist was sitting in. Allison Winter counseled Heuermann and his family for nearly three years inside the Suffolk County Jail, present around the time of that confession, and she's now facing eighteen felony charges for allegedly practicing without a license and billing insurance for more than sixty thousand dollars.

We get into the legal weeds on this one with Eric Faddis, a former prosecutor and current defense attorney. First question: does therapist-patient privilege even apply if the therapist was never legitimately licensed to begin with? Faddis walks through why that confidentiality question might not be as simple as it sounds, and what it could mean for Heuermann if he ever wanted to challenge what came out of those sessions.

Then there's the plea itself. Heuermann already pled guilty, and Faddis explains why that decision makes any appeal built around Winter's lack of licensure an uphill fight — appellate courts give far less weight to complaints raised after a guilty plea than after a trial verdict. We also break down the insurance fraud angle, why prosecutors tend to treat cases involving manipulation of real people more seriously than simple paperwork fraud, and whether Winter could be exposed to civil lawsuits from anyone connected to the case.

This is one of the stranger side stories to come out of the Heuermann saga, and it raises a real question about how these institutions vet the people who get closest to their highest-profile inmates. We walk through the charges, the legal exposure, and what happens next.
