165 | Where to Shop and When to Invest In Higher Quality Pieces Aug 08, 2024
    Show notes

As I approach my 40th birthday this fall, I'm noticing a shift in myself and other women my age. At some point in our 30s and 40s, we seem to start losing our love of chasing trends and develop a deep desire to have a quality wardrobe that lasts. We want to feel mature and look more polished. We want to look stylish in an effortless way without sacrificing our comfort. And as working women and moms, we want outfits that meet the demands of our lives — our real lives — not the Instagram highlight reel or the galavanting versions of ourselves we were a decade or so ago in college and early adulthood.

We're growing up and we want our wardrobes to reflect who we are today. So, if you're anything like me or our friend, Tomi, who sent in today's Q&A Thursday topics, you want to know where you're supposed to shop and when to invest in higher quality pieces. It can feel intimidating to start thinking about your wardrobe with purpose and intention. But in this episode, we're going to make it easy to find what you want and to know exactly what you need to build a wardrobe you love, and that will last.

164 | How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe That Feels Right for You Aug 05, 2024
    Show notes

We need to talk about pre-assembled, done-for-you capsule wardrobes for a minute. I love the idea of keeping things simple and eliminating the guesswork as much as the next gal. Sure, you can follow one of these guides or checklists each season and wind up with a few great pieces you love. The colors might coordinate effortlessly. It might land perfectly within your budget. But can you ever truly feel like yourself when you're trying to look like somebody else?

I ran a Google search on "2024 capsule wardrobe" and the results were astounding. 9 out of 10 images that came up were comprised of classic pieces. They all had: basic white tees, denim button down blouses, quintessential khaki trench coats, some kind of black cardigan or blazer, the same exact ivory, beige, medium wash denim, and black assortment of pants, and —if we're getting wild— maybe a piece or two in olive green or pure red for a much needed splash of color. Friend, they're all the same!

Now, I'm sure there are some outliers and you're welcome to enlighten me with your favorite capsule finds. But why are we all curating our closets in the exact same cookie-cutter way? We're all unique! Our tastes vary! Our bodies and coloring are one-of-a-kind! Our calendars consist of so many different activities! And I think this is why we're feeling bored, frustrated, and confused when it comes to getting dressed.

So today, let's stop defaulting to what everyone else is doing and take a personalized approach at creating our capsule wardrobes. I want you to have clothing and accessories that mix and match effortlessly AND that feel right for you. If that sounds good, then you've come to the right place. Let's go, friend!

163 | What to Do if Your Color Palette Doesn't Align With Your Personal Style Aug 01, 2024
    Show notes

We've been talking a lot about colors recently, and I, for one, am pretty excited about that! It's such an important component in your wardrobe, but it's not the only factor to keep in mind when choosing your clothing and accessories. In fact, sometimes, your best colors can be a deterrent when it comes to building a wardrobe you love. Say what now?

Well, we know most color analysts only consider your personal coloring when putting together their recommendations for your best hues, so what do you do if your palette doesn't align with your personal style or preferences? Should you throw your tastes out the window and prioritize your most flattering colors over the aesthetics that light you up?

Our friend, Lisa, submitted a question on this exact challenge recently. The short answer is: You do NOT need to compromise your personal taste for your personal colors. There is a way to have both. In today's episode, I'm offering up a ton of advice to help you align the colors that look best on you with the styles you like to wear most. Stick around as I walk you through all the ways to make your personal colors and your personal preferences work perfectly together.

162 | The Power of Color Psychology and How to Use It to Make the Best Impression Jul 29, 2024
    Show notes

I don't know how long you've been listening to HER Style Podcast, whether this is the first episode you're exploring or if you've been following the show consistently for the past year and a half. But I don't think it'll take you long to pick up on the fact that I am pretty obsessed with color. I think it's one of the most underrated aspects of our wardrobes and it's what I've studied the most extensively in my last 17 years as an image consultant.

I've shared the statistic that between 62-90% of someone's initial judgment about a person, a product, or an environment is based on color ALONE. So it's not just my opinion that the colors you wear make a massive difference in your overall presentation and the impression that you leave behind you.

If you own a business and you need to show up on social media or on your website, if you are out on the dating scene, or if you're a work from home mom trying to juggle all the things, what you wear communicates something about you and the colors you put on play, arguably, the biggest part in that.

So today, I want to talk about the power of color psychology — what it is, the difference between general and personal color psychology, what your favorite colors say about you, and how you can use colors to make the best impression. This is going to be a fun and eye-opening conversation and will help you recognize the importance of the colors you wear and surround yourself with. I can't wait to share this one with you!

    161 | Best Packing Practices for Worry-Free Travel Jul 25, 2024
    Show notes

I LOVE traveling. There's something wonderful about escaping from your routine and something just as lovely about returning to it at the end of a trip. I find being away from home, no matter how incredible, always makes me grateful to get back. I haven't done too many excursions from my real life lately, with a young child and buying a new home this year. We're enjoying being in our happy place and getting settled in this particular season of life. But I have traveled a ton throughout my adult years and I've learned a lot about how to plan and pack a travel wardrobe — worry-free.

Because yes, I tend to worry. I think of all the worst case scenarios. I deal with anxiety and I hate to feel out of control when things don't go according to plan. So I know, firsthand, how hard it can be to find the delicate balance between planning for a trip and obsessively stressing over a trip.

In today's episode, I'm answering a whole series of questions from our friend, Eden, about how to get ready for a multi-purpose getaway with less stress and anxiety, so you can ensure you have what you need to enjoy yourself and leave your worries at home. If you have more travel plans coming up this summer or in the months ahead, you're going to want to turn up the volume and get ready to take some notes! Let's plan your perfect travel wardrobe, completely stress-free.

    Show notes

Let me tell you about the time I completely transformed my closet in ONE afternoon. What did I do, you ask? First, let me tell you what I didn't do.

I didn't go on a wild shopping spree. I didn't pile everything I own onto my bed in an effort to eliminate the excess. And I didn't spend a small fortune. (I actually didn't spend a penny.)

    Instead, I reorganized.

I implemented five items I already own ─and that you can pick up yourself for less than $15 each─ to change everything about the way I saw my wardrobe, both literally and figuratively. In today's episode, I'm revealing 5 closet organization essentials that will help you keep your pieces neat, tidy, and pleasing to the eye. Let's dive in and discuss!

159 | What I Would Choose If I Had $500 to Build My Wardrobe From Scratch Jul 18, 2024
    Show notes

It's happened. I'm pretty sure I've received the juiciest Q&A Thursday question yet! Our friend, Lyndsay, emailed me and asked, "If you were to do a completely fresh start with your wardrobe. With let's say $500 or less, what would you choose?"

Well, Lyndsay, you'd better believe I used every penny of that $500 limit you gave me, but I did it! I sat down with the simple budget planning template I provide inside HER Style Collective and in less than an hour, I mapped out a strategic shopping list of what I would buy if I had $500 to rebuild my entire wardrobe from scratch.

These are actual, concrete numbers and I verified that I could find options I would be excited to purchase at each of these price points. In today's episode, I'm breaking it all down for you about what I would buy, how I figured out what I would buy, and why I say —with confidence— that you can build a wardrobe you love no matter your budget.
