Hell in a Cellphone — Comedy
Hell in a Cellphone

Hell in a Cellphone is a wrestling podcast hosted by three comedian friends, where longtime marks Aaron Benoit and Bobby Hankinson introduce recent convert Eric Silver to the shock and awe of the Attitude Era in WWF/WWE. From “Austin 3:16” through “Ruthless Aggression,” in each episode they’ll watch a pay-per-view and dissect the rise of some of the biggest, most charismatic wrestlers of all time, and reckon with all the baggage that came along with them. There will be romance, there will be tragedy, and you know somebody is going through the Spanish announce table!

REWIND - Pacific Blue - "Seduced" (Triple H) & "Heat in the Hole" (Sable) Jun 29, 2020

Show notes

If you watched RAW in the late 90’s, you definitely saw commercials for the USA Network’s super problematic bike cop action drama Pacific Blue. And wouldn’t you know, in an act of corporate synergy, a bunch of WWF stars showed up on the beach. We look at two of these episodes: Season 4, Episode 3, “Seduced” guest starring Triple H and Season 4, Episode 8 “Heat in the Hole” guest starring Sable.

DEEP DIVE - D'Lo and the Sexual Chocolate Factory Jun 22, 2020

Show notes

Tag team Mark Henry and D’Lo Brown star in a number of crisscrossing stories featuring Chyna, the women of Pretty Mean Sisters, that check off pretty much every square in the Attitude Era bingo card: lawsuits, misogyny, ball gags, date night, transphobia, “bitches be lyin’,” hound dogs, and so much more.

DEEP DIVE - A Hawk in flight Jun 15, 2020

Show notes

The Legion of Doom is one of the most venerable tag teams of all time, but some of their last moments in the WWF dipped a little too heavily into Hawk’s real life struggles and required the acceptance that Droz was capable of machinations.

Episode 36 - WrestleMania XV - March 28, 1999 Jun 08, 2020

Show notes

From the Memphis Pyramid to the banks of the Mississippi River, the WWF ends the In Your House era with a weird one. There’s a great hardcore match, an elevation of Chyna, another classic from the Rock and Mankind and the debut of a future hall of famer during Stone Cold vs. Vince McMahon in a steel cage.

DEEP DIVE - Halftime Is Game Time May 11, 2020

Show notes

Super Bowl XXXIII was a one sided bore, but halftime gave viewers at least three options: the regular halftime show featuring Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Fox, Celebrity Deathmatch’s Deathbowl ‘99 on Fox, and Mankind vs. the Rock in an empty arena for the WWF Championship on USA. We watched all three to let you know what you should’ve watched 21 years ago. You’re welcome.

Episode 34 - Royal Rumble - January 24, 1999 May 04, 2020

Show notes

From Anaheim California, one of the most exciting years in WWF history starts with a lukewarm rumble, where most things serve to further the Austin/McMahon story. Add in a few undercard matches featuring pairings of DX and the Corporation we’ve seen repeatedly on RAW and a Championship match that you can literally pinpoint the moment it goes too far.

DEEP DIVE - Bischoff's Folly Apr 27, 2020

Show notes

We go out of our comfort zones as we tackle both recording remotely and WCW content, more specifically one of the most infamous episodes of Nitro paired with one of the best episodes of Raw and the first championships for one of our favorites. That’s gonna put some butts in seats!

Want to get caught up? This episode deals with content from the January 4th episodes of RAW and Nitro.
