ChatGPT Asks the Questions - Healthcare IT Today Podcast Episode 108
Feb 20, 2023
For the 108th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we decided to mix things up. Regular listeners will know that last episode we talked about Generative AI (ChatGPT being one example) in healthcare. With that context in mind, we thought it would be fun for this episode to let ChatGPT take over and asks us the questions. We asked ChatGPT the following question “Can you come up with 4 questions for a podcast on healthcare IT (technology)?” and it generated the following questions:
How is healthcare technology impacting the delivery of patient care?
What are some of the most promising advancements in healthcare IT currently under development?
How is the healthcare industry addressing concerns about data privacy and security with the increasing use of technology?
What role do you see technology playing in the future of the healthcare industry?
As you can see from the questions, they were pretty generic and not that good. We almost did the episode on these questions and figured we could make it interesting using our responses since the questions were so generic. However, then we decided to see if ChatGPT could do better. So, we asked ChatGPT to make the questions more specific and interesting. Here’s a look at the 2nd set of questions that ChatGPT provided us after this extra prompt:
How is the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) changing the way doctors and nurses document patient care?
Can you discuss the use of telemedicine and how it’s being used to reach underserved communities?
How is the healthcare industry using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to improve patient outcomes?
Can you discuss the challenges of implementing and maintaining a successful healthcare IT infrastructure, and what solutions are being proposed to address these challenges?
As you can see, much more specific and interesting. We used these four questions as the framework for this episode. We’ll let you decide after listening to the episode if this was a good idea of bad. We look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments and on social media.
Now, without further ado, we’re excited to share with you the next episode of the Healthcare IT Today podcast.

Health IT Topics We Want to Stop and Start Talking About - Healthcare IT Today Podcast Episode 68
Aug 09, 2021
For the 68th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about Health IT Topics We Want to Stop and Start Talking About. It’s reasonable to say that we live, breathe, eat and sleep healthcare. Maybe this makes us biased and tired of talking about a number of topics which others still enjoy. However, my guess is that many of you are tired of talking about a number of topics as well. Plus, there are plenty of topics that don’t get talked about enough that should get more attention. That’s the basis of this episode where we share how we feel about a number of topics. A number of them we’re sick of hearing about. Others we hope will get talked about more. We hope you’ll share how you feel about these topics and which ones you’d add to the list and where.
Here’s a look at the areas of health IT we want to start and stop talking about (you’ll have to listen to which topic we want more of and which we want less):
HIPAA and vaccines/HIPAA and healthcare questions
Price transparency
Patient access to data

Is Health IT a Contributor or a Solution to Staff Burnout - Episode 58
Mar 22, 2021
For the 58th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about burnout and health IT’s role in staff burnout. We all know that burnout has become a major issue in healthcare. Far too often we’re hearing of physician suicides and many doctors leaving their jobs because they’re burnt out. Plus, COVID has added another layer of complexity to the discussion.
Many people point at health IT when it comes to the topic of burnout. The ironic part is that some point to health IT as the problem (ie. I hate my EMR) and others point to health IT as the potential solution (ie. EHR auto documentation). There’s little doubt that health IT likely plays a role in both sides of the spectrum. In this episode we dive into those details. Plus, we talk about how burnout has been impacted by COVID.
Here’s a look at the topic and questions we discuss on this episode:
Nurse Shortage/Physician Shortage – Is burnout causing them to leave?
How does health IT contribute to burnout?
How does health IT help avoid burnout?
Has a COVID made burnout a universal problem?
For this episode, we want to take a minute to recognize 2 members of the community who are working hard on the problem of burnout. First is Gabe Charbonneau. You’ve probably seen his awesome Fight Burnout t-shirts that recognize Burnout Warriors. John and I are wearing them in the video version of the podcsat. Gabe is working hard to improve the doctor-patient relationship so that more doctors stay in the industry. Learn more and get your t-shirt at FightBurnout.org
Next is Janae Sharp and the Sharp Index. Having suffered the tragedy of physician suicide in her life, the Sharp Index is working to reduce stigma around physician suicide and burnout and improve physician wellness. Learn more at SharpIndex.org

Stop Information Blocking - Episode 57
Mar 08, 2021
For the 57th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about information blocking. No doubt the healthcare industry knows that the 21st Century Cures Act includes a number of provisions and requirements around information blocking or more aptly said requirements to share data and not block patients from access to that data. Information blocking enforcement was delayed until April 5, 2021, but that deadline is approaching very quickly and I see no signs from ONC of more delays.
In this episode, we dive into the topic of information blocking including why it’s so controversial. Plus, we talk about the impact the information blocking regulation is going to have on the health IT industry and how we think organizations are responding to it. Here’s a look at the major topics we discuss on this episode:
What is Information Blocking?
Why is Information Blocking so controversial? Do we even need it?
What impact will Information Blocking have on patients? Providers? Vendors?
What do we expect to see from the vendor community?

Why Isn't RPM Exploding Like Telehealth Video Visits?
Feb 08, 2021
For the 55th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re going asking the question “Why Isn’t RPM (Remote Patient Monitoring) exploding like telehealth video visits? Everyone loves to talk about the explosion of telehealth that has occurred in healthcare thanks to COVID-19. In fact, we’ve highlighted the growth of telehealth ourselves. The problem is that telehealth is too broad of a term since it includes a wide variety of things including live video telehealth visits, remote patient monitoring (RPM), specialty specific acute care telehealth, direct to consumer telehealth, telequarantine, virtual sitters, and much more. Plus, even this might be too simplistic, but you get the point.
With these different versions of telehealth in mind, it would be more accurate to say that live video telehealth visits have exploded thanks to COVID. Is the same true for other areas of telehealth? How have they been impacted? In this episode, we dive into RPM (remote patient monitoring) and how RPM has been impacted during COVID. Here are the main RPM questions we discuss:
Where are we at with RPM Adoption?
Where are we seeing RPM success?
What companies stand out in the RPM space?
What does an enterprise RPM approach look like?
And a big thank you to our sponsor for this episode, Carium. Carium’s telehealth and remote patient monitoring platform enables providers to deliver relationship-based, digital care across multiple clinical specialties. They partner with health systems and practices on their glide path to digital transformation — starting with one use case at a time and expanding across the entire enterprise. Interoperability We Don't Talk About - Episode 54
Jan 25, 2021
For the 54th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re going shed some light on the areas of healthcare interoperability that don’t get talked about enough. Many people in healthcare talk ad nauseum about clinical healthcare interoperability. While that’s an extremely important topic of discussion, there are a lot of other areas of healthcare interoperability that don’t get talked about nearly enough.
Here’s a look at some of the healthcare interoperability topics we discuss on this episode:
What do you think of the new healthcare pricing transparency rule?
Will available data on healthcare pricing transparency change patient behavior? Will this rule change patient behavior?
What new operational data do we need to be interoperable thanks to COVID?
What’s happening with interoperability of SDoH Data?

For the 53rd episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’ll be making predictions on what we can expect from health IT in 2021. As we put 2020 in the rear view mirror, it’s time to look ahead to 2021. No doubt, 2021 will be dealing with many of the things that happened in 2020, but it also highlighted a lot of great opportunities for healthcare.
To look at our predictions in a little different light, we’re actually going to consider what won’t happen in health IT in 2021. Then, we dive into what we expect from healthcare conferences in 2021 and what we expect to see from health IT in 2021. Here’s a quick rundown of the questions we discuss:
Health IT as a whole, what do you think will happen in 2021?
When will we next see each other?

Dec 28, 2020
For the 52nd episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about the The Good, the Bad, and the Messy in 2020. That’s right! We’re taking a look back at the year that was 2020 in healthcare IT. What a year it’s been. One that I’m sure none of us will forget and healthcare IT has played a crucial role in so many ways. Plus, in many ways the industry has been pushed forward in ways that would have taken decades to accomplish previously.
On this episode we dive into the following questions as we look back at healthcare IT in 2020:
What was the most surprising Health IT thing in 2020?
Which non-traditional healthcare company was most in-the-news in 2020?
What was the best non COVID-19 thing that happened in Health IT?
When we look back at 2020 what will we point to that shaped the future?

COVID-19 Vaccine Tech Tracking and Marketing - Episode 51
Dec 14, 2020
For the 51st episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about the COVID-19 Vaccine. Obviously, being a healthcare IT publication, we’re not going to dive into any of the clinical details of the vaccine. Instead, we’ll focus on the areas of healthcare IT and healthcare marketing that are impacted by the vaccine.
To open this episode, we dive into how health IT systems are going to track the COVID-19 vaccine. We talk about topics like patient identification and healthcare interoperability when it relates to sharing information on who has gotten the COVID-19 vaccine. Plus, we dive into the health IT communication systems that will be needed to let patients know when the COVID-19 is available. We also talk about some of the ways IT solutions can be used to predict how much vaccine is needed in a given area.
Then, we shift gears a little and talk about the challenge of marketing the COVID-19 vaccine. In this case, it’s not about creating demand for the vaccine which no doubt is already high. Instead, we talk about what’s going to be needed from healthcare marketers to ensure that patients are getting the messaging needed so they trust the vaccine. That’s going to be a challenge. We even include a reference to Elvis that many will enjoy.
Now, without further ado, we’re excited to share with you the next episode of the Healthcare IT Today podcast.
NOTE: We recorded this episode before the COVID-19 vaccine was even approved. Thankfully, the first vaccinations are happening today.

Thanksgiving Gratitude - Episode 50
Nov 30, 2020
For the 50th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re sharing gratitude with the healthcare IT community. While this year has been a massively hectic and challenging year for pretty much everyone, there’s also still a lot to be grateful for in the world.
This is particularly true in the world of healthcare and health IT. We all know there are still massive challenges, but in this episode of the podcast, we look at some of the things that have us most excited about health IT. We share some of the things we’re grateful for both professionally and personally.
While this topic seemed especially appropriate so close to Thanksgiving and the holidays, it also felt very appropriate to give thanks on our 50th Healthcare IT Today episode. It’s hard to believe we’ve recorded 50 episodes, but time flies when you’re having fun. We thank each of you who have listened into each episode and we appreciate all your support through the years.
Let us know what you’re thankful for. Share your thoughts in the comments or on social media with the hashtag #HITsm and mention the account @hcittoday. It’s amazing how many things there are to be grateful for once we slow down and recognize all the good.

Insights from Recent Health IT Virtual Events - Episode 49
Nov 16, 2020
For the 49th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about a number of virtual events we’ve attended and some of the insights coming out of those events. One of the advantages of virtual health IT conferences is that we can easily attend all of them. We don’t have to necessarily choose which ones we want to travel to in order to attend. One of the disadvantages of virtual conferences is that we can travel to all of them and so we only attend pieces of each event. That said, there was still a lot of great knowledge and perspectives dropped at these events.
In this episode we share the things that stood out to us. We share some of the unique presentations and announcements we saw and heard. You’ll hear about the trends we see. Plus, we share some of the shocking and insightful quotes we heard at the events.
Here’s a quick preview of the topics and questions we discuss in this episode:

2020 Presidential Election and Its Impact on Health IT- Episode 48
Nov 02, 2020
For the 48th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about the 2020 Presidential Election and Its Impact on Health IT. Tomorrow is election day in the US and with every presidential election, there’s an impact on healthcare. Whether it’s new legislation or other changes, the one reality with a US presidential election is that healthcare is impacted.
Just so it’s clear, in this episode, we don’t talk about what we’d like to have happen or who we’d like to be president or those types of questions. Instead, we talk about what we think is going to happen if either Trump or Biden get elected and what impact that will have on healthcare and health IT. We also dive into when we might see changes. Plus, Colin offers some interesting insights into universal healthcare (Medicare for All if you will) and how that happened in Canada.
Here’s a quick preview of the topics and questions we discuss in this episode:
What if Biden wins the US presidential election?
What if Trump wins the US presidential election?
What policy and regulations could be impacted?
What will be the impact of either on health IT?

Which EHR Phase Are We In? - Episode 47
Oct 19, 2020
For the 47th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about the various phases of EHR (or EMR if you prefer). In a recent article by Colin Hung, he identified 4 phases of EMR. As we look at the current EMR and EHR market, we see healthcare organizations across nearly all 4 phases. However, we’re also seeing a maturity to the EMR market that we hadn’t really seen previously.
In this episode we dive into all 4 EMR phases. We discuss what we see happening in each phase and we talk about which EMR phase we think most healthcare organizations are at today. Plus, we give a preview of what the next EMR phase is going to be.
Here’s a quick preview of the EMR phases we discuss in this episode:

The Battle for Telehealth - EHR vs Third Party - Episode 46
Oct 05, 2020
For the 46th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about the battle for telehealth. More specifically, we’re talking about EHR vendors entrance into telehealth and third party telehealth vendors. For those that have been following our EHR Telehealth vendor series, you know that EHR vendors are all diving into the live video telehealth space. No doubt they see an opportunity to be the telehealth provider for their EHR users.
While EHR vendors are offering their own telehealth solution, many third party telehealth vendors have been working in the space for a long time and have really compelling offerings as well. Plus, many of them are expanding beyond the live video telehealth visits to other areas of telehealth like RPM (remote patient monitoring).
In this episode we dive into the telehealth battle between EHR vendors and 3rd party telehealth vendors. Plus, we talk about telehealth investment and whether we think it will continue. Then, we also talk about what we see happening with consolidation in the telehealth space.
Here’s a quick preview of the topics and questions we discuss in this episode:
EHR Telehealth vs Third-Party Telehealth

For the 45th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about the financial impact of COVID-19 on healthcare organizations. Plus, in this episode, we’re excited to welcome a special guest host, Jon Kimerle, Head of Epic Solutions at Pure Storage. Jon was a great guest host that brought a lot of knowledge and experience on how to handle these challenging times.
Needless to say, healthcare has taken a big financial hit from COVID-19 and the shutdown of elective procedures. In this episode, Jon Kimerle and I dive into the new financial constraints that healthcare organizations face and how it’s impacting health IT leaders. Then, we share how organizations can still drive innovation despite tightened budgets. Finally, we look ahead to what’s going to happen next as COVID-19 has forced healthcare’s digital transformation.

COVID-19 + Return to Work - Episode 44
Sep 08, 2020
For the 44th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about the return to work amidst COVID-19. This topic is literally ripped from the headlines as Epic’s decision to return to work hit mainstream media. They’ve since dialed it back a little, but they are still pushing to have their employees return to the office in Madison.
While Epic feels strongly that their employees need to return to the office, many other companies are still embracing remote work. Leading this is many of the large tech companies. Many of them are wondering if they’ll ever return to the office. As we dive into this somewhat controversial topic, we also talk about the technologies that will enable the return to work and how this is going to impact healthcare.

Healthcare Beefs - Episode 43
Aug 24, 2020
For the 43rd episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re getting a few things off our chest in an episode we’re calling “Healthcare Beefs.” We all have plenty of things that annoy us about healthcare, so we thought we’d take a minute to share a few (no doubt there are many) things that are bothering us. Ok, this is one part therapy and another part informative, but hopefully you can join in and commiserate with us.
Plus, after sharing some of our Healthcare Beefs, we ask each other a few surprise questions. The first is a Health IT question and then we ask an off topic question as well. It’s always fun to put our co-host on the spot and see how they respond to some surprise questions.

Aug 10, 2020
For the 42nd episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re asking the question, “Is Healthcare Social Media Dead?” There’s certainly a lot of things that have been going on with social media and a lot of people complaining about what social media has become. As Colin and I spend way too much time on social media, we talk about what all these changes mean and if anything good is accomplished on social media.
Plus, we dive into healthcare social media specifically and what we’re seeing and experiencing with social media. We also make a prediction on where social media is going from here and offer some tips and strategies for those who may need some help making the most of social media.

Needless to say, we think this is a really important topic to be discussing and ensuring we each understand as the healthcare digital world continues to evolve.
In this episode we dive into more details and perspectives on these two new digital front doors: Triaging Patients and Virtual Waiting Rooms / Check-in. If you want to better understand the importance of each of these and what we think is going to happen with each, you’ll enjoy this episode and you’ll be better prepared to lead your organization through these changes.
