Robert Lufkin MD: Extending Life with Rapamycin Jul 19, 2022

For this weeks episode we are going to look at a brief interview I recently did with James Strole about my upcoming presentation at the RAADFEST conference in October in San Diego. While the interview is entitled ‘Extending Life with Rapamycin’, I want to be clear that 1- the use of rapamycin is an off label use of an FDA approved prescription only drug, 2-rapamycin is a potentially dangerous drug that should only be used under the care of a physician with experience in this area, and 3- although extremely promising longevity results are present in animal models the longevity benefits of rapamycin in humans are still being determined.

Retinal Imaging for Alzheimer's Disease

The retina is actually part of the central nervous system, originating as an outgrowth of the developing brain and shares many similarities with the brain. The retina is easily accessible for direct and noninvasive imaging with high spatial resolution and sensitivity. Today we hear from one company that is focusing on that for Alzheimers disease. The presentation does contain some technical detail but provides a look at new possibilities for diagnosis and risk assessment.

Steve Verdooner serves as the CEO of NeuroVision Imaging, a company developing retinal and fluid biomarkers for neurodegenerative disease. Steve was co-founder and CEO of Ophthalmic Imaging Systems (1984-2007). OIS was a company dedicated to research, development, marketing, selling and manufacturing diagnostic medical imaging systems and informatics software for the eye care market.

We’ve heard about a number of biomarkers that can assess Alzheimers risk before the onset of cognitive impairment or memory loss. These include such tests as MR scans for hippocampal volume loss, brain glucose utilization, and genetic testing for APOE4 alleles. Another possible biomarker that is even more easily examined than any of the above is simply the person’s speech/linguistic patterns.

Elif Eyigoz has an exceptional multi-disciplinary background with degrees in Philosophy (BA), Cognitive Science (MA), Linguistics (MA), and Computer Science (MS and PhD). After she completed her education, she joined IBM in 2014 as a natural language processing (NLP) algorithms developer at Watson Labs, and later joined IBM research in 2016 as a researcher.

What to do about Mercury Dental Fillings? To be perfectly clear -Mercury is toxic-its a poison. One of the main symptoms is cognitive impairment, including memory loss. Mercury can also induce the characteristic amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles seen in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. It also damages the antioxidant glutathione which limits our ability to handle free radicals. So there are many reasons to stay away from this dangerous substance. And this isn’t really new.
The effects of mercury were known throughout history. Mercury toxicity resulted in the phrase "mad as a hatter" . Mercury was used in the manufacturing of felt hats during the 19th century, causing a high rate of mercury poisoning among those working in the hat industry. This was later immortalized in Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice’s Adventures in wonderland.
There are two forms of mercury that can harm us:
Organic or methyl mercury which can be found in fish. This will be the topic of another video.
Inorganic or metal mercury can be acquired from handling old mercury thermometers but today the greatest risk is from the metal in certain fillings in our teeth.
Now how do we know if we have mercury exposure and possible early toxicity? There is a blood test but because Mercury tends to migrate to other tissues such as bone and brain the blood test may not be positive. It is thus possible to have mercury toxicity without increased blood levels. If the blood mercury is equal to or greater than 5 mcg/L then there is mercury toxicity. If blood levels are below that there still could be toxicity for the reasons mentioned.
The current most sensitive mercury test uses a combination of blood, urine and hair to make the determination. And it reports inorganic and methyl mercury levels separately so the source can be determined. Its called the Mercury Tri-Test from Quicksilver Scientific
People of a certain age may have amalgam dental fillings.
Dental amalgam is an alloy of silver, copper, tin, and zinc combined with 50% mercury.
Look in your mouth and look for the characteristic dark appearance of the amalgam.
Note some amalgam may be hidden below a crown.
So just because you don’t see any amalgam doesn’t mean it's not there if you have crowns.
Each amalgam filling can leak up to 10 micrograms of mercury/day into circulation according to some reports

Apolipoprotein E is a protein involved in the metabolism of fats in the body of mammals. The ApoE4 subtype is the most well known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. It is also implicated in cardiovascular disease, stroke, Parkinson’s, Lewy body dementia, multiple sclerosis, and other aging-associated diseases. The underlying pathologic role of the APOE alleles may be understood in terms of its metabolic impact during aging, which has implications for optimizing our diet.

Robert Lufkin MD: Top 4 Reasons To Eat Organic Nov 05, 2021

023-What’s the deal with organic foods? They usually look a little smaller than the regular ones and are often more expensive.

So why do people put up with that to eat them? We are going to look at the 4 top reasons that you may want to consider.

First- what does organic even mean? Produce can be called ‘organic’ in the US only if it’s certified to have grown on soil that had no prohibited substances applied for three years prior to harvest. Prohibited substances include most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Products labeled “organic” must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt). Any remaining ingredients must consist of non-agricultural substances that appear on the NOP National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances.

The danger of course with nonorganic fruits and vegetables is that they are exposed to many pesticides that are toxic to humans. And unfortunately washing or peeling the produce does little to lower this exposure. Here are the 4 worst ones:

[1] First is Paraquat. It is one of the most widely used herbicides in the US for the control of weeds in many agricultural and non-agricultural settings. It is also used as a defoliant on crops, such as cotton, prior to harvest. A 2013 meta-analysis published in Neurology found that 'exposure to paraquat ... was associated with about a 2-fold increase in risk' of Parkinson's disease. Paraquat is structurally similar to MPP+, a known fast-acting inducer of Parkinson's disease in primate brains known as Cyperquat. Yikes!!

[2] A chemical called glycine methyl phosphate or for short - Glyphosate has been a key component of the widely used weedkiller Roundup from Monsanto since 1974 when it was introduced. Although still in use in the US, The WHO recently classified it as "probably carcinogenic in humans”. Glyphosate has several pathologic actions in humans. Because of its similarity to the amino acid glycine it is suggested that it can substitute for it in proteins and interfere with their action. It is reported to be found in cereals such as Cheerios although maker General Mills claims that the dose is low. While the role of glyphosate as a neurotoxin is still debated, this is another reason to eat organic.

Why Great Medical Care Doesn't Always Equal Great Health Oct 29, 2021

Why doesn’t great medical care consistently result in great health?

It’s been my privilege to work as a full professor at some truly world class medical schools. The great challenge I’m seeing is that despite the most advanced medical technologies, more and more people are becoming sick with chronic diseases. These include obesity, type two diabetes, and the resulting diseases of hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, heart disease, dementia, and even some cancers.

There’s growing evidence that these chronic diseases are all driven by a common underlying metabolic dysfunction. conventional medical tools such as drugs and surgery, can treat the immediate acute symptoms of the diseases, but usually fail to reverse the root cause. metabolic dysfunction is best addressed with overall lifestyle modification, which our medical system is not currently optimized to deliver.

Along with the breakthroughs in our understanding of metabolic disease, there have been similar advances in our understanding of longevity and aging, all appear to be driven by the same master nutrient sensing systems that are so exquisitely responsive to lifestyle changes.

I believe that lifestyle modification is a major underutilized opportunity to improve both our health and longevity. I’ve now made this my primary focus to help bring evidence based quality information to the general public through podcasts, videos, and other presentations.
