Do You Want To Take A Sabbatical? Jun 14, 2022
    Show notes

I've craved this sabbatical for years. My sister is a public school teacher and sometimes she takes several weeks off during the summer.

I've always envied her weeks off. As my sister went on long road trips with her family or just slowed down at home, I'd find myself thinking…"must be nice."

Then immediately I'd feel ashamed about my envy.

My sis overworks all year long. As educators, she and her colleagues are expected to pick up the slack of a ridiculously underfunded educational system. They've clearly gone beyond earning many many weeks off. And often they spend some of those weeks cleaning their classrooms and prepping for the next year.

I just heard that about 60% of teachers are thinking about or wishing they could leave the classroom.

And then there's everyone I know who's an overworked therapist. I know a lot of therapists working too many hours for not enough pay, either in private practice or in agencies.

    Me on the other hand...

I make good money. As a micro business owner I create my own hours, wages and working conditions. Regardless of my envy, I never thought I should or even could take two months off.

Of course sometimes I'm stressed. Of course sometimes I create ridiculous working conditions for myself...but I also have the freedom to get back out of those situations.

I'm taking these two months off because I want to, not because I need to.

Are you thinking "must be nice"?

Yes, I believe it will be.

Let's plan your sabbatical too, whether you are overworked or burned out or just because you want one.

In this episode I share what I've done well in prepping for this time off as well as what I've messed up so far.

An Honest Launch Story With Bari Tessler May 31, 2022
    Show notes

We're gonna take a very honest look at what it's like to run a robust, successful online program. Bari Tessler has been running the Art Of Money for over 10 years now. It's a fabulous program, which I've been through myself.

Here's a little more about her:

Bari Tessler, M.A., is a Financial Therapist and the Founder of The Art of Money, a year-long money school. She's a pioneer in the Financial Therapy field and the Author of The Art of Money: A Life-Changing Guide to Financial Happiness.

In this episode, she shares the journey she's been through with the marketing of this course over the last two years, including some really tough moments. You'll hear about the financial decisions, the marketing strategy, and the emotional side of this journey.

Here's some of what we talked about:

    • Why her program is one-year long
    • Realizing she hated the intensity of launching
    • Changing her overall launch strategy to evergreen in 2020
    • Running Facebook ads that worked remarkably well...until they didn't because of IOS 14
    • Going through perimenopause while her business was in a transition
    • When she opens up private sessions
    • Returning to a deadline launch strategy this year
    • Running a simple, less stressful, very successful launch

Ask Annie: What if someone asks for a refund? May 17, 2022
    Show notes

So let's say you've created a wonderful signature program, and people sign up. Fabulous!

Then someone asks for a refund.

    😕

    What should you do?

That's the question I answer in this week's episode.

I walk you through how to get through the initial moment, then to make a decision, create a solid refund policy moving forward, and finally to make moves that will help you have less refund requests and more happy participants.

Here's some of what I talk about:

    • Working through your initial feelings, especially if you take the request personally
    • Making a decision about whether or not to give a refund
    • Some different approaches to designing your refund policy from now on
    • Why you might or might NOT want to have a super-liberal refund policy
    • A bunch of ways to get less refund requests and more happy participants

Write Your First Book With Laura Mae Northrup May 03, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode you're going to hear how my guest wrote a book that matters. For a full year, she sat herself down and focused in on this project which is now a significant part of her legacy. If you're considering writing a book or taking on any big and important project, you'll want to hear this.

Laura Mae Northrup is an author, educator, somatic psychotherapist, and podcaster. Her book Radical Healership which came out in February is a spiritually-informed and anticapitalist guide for healing practitioners who seek to build a values-driven healing practice. She is the host and creator of the podcast Inside Eyes, an audio series about people using entheogens and psychedelics to heal from sexual trauma. Her work focuses on defining sexual violence through a spiritual and politicized lens, mentoring healing practitioners in creating a meaningful path, and supporting the spiritual integrity of our collective humanity.

Here's some of what we talked about:

    • Her reaction when people told her not to make a podcast about people using psychedelics and entheogens to heal sexual trauma
    • How she got offered a book contract to write Radical Healership
    • Writing the book during the pandemic
    • Developing her writing rituals and building those muscles
    • Having brutally honest people read her drafts
    • How she found the time to write her book in a year
    • Maintaining her writing practice now that the book is out
    • Why we sometimes don't write the book or create our work: it's an emotional and spiritual issue

Ask Annie: Do I have to do a webinar? Apr 19, 2022
    Show notes

Lots of my clients are afraid to do webinars. Like I can't think about anything else, I just want to cancel it kind of afraid. Like I'm convinced I will make a total fool of myself kind of afraid. Like can I just get under the covers instead kind of afraid. Like sweaty-as-hell-armpits kind of afraid.

I used to be afraid to do webinars too. In this episode I talk about why it might be worth it to move through that fear, and I share 23 ways to make webinars go better for you and your attendees.

The short answer to the question "Do I have to do a webinar?" is, of course, no. You are the boss of you.

Here's why I think you should try it even if you're as uncomfortable with the idea as I used to be:

    • There's pretty much nothing like a webinar to allow you to interact and connect with the people you're here to serve.
    • You get to see people's questions and their reactions to what you're sharing, which is valuable market research.
    • You're able to provide value to your attendees in real time.
    • Your future participants get a sense of you that they can't get just by reading your emails, and that helps them decide whether you're a good fit for each other.
    • You grow your email list every time you do a webinar, and that's key to making money. (Listen to my recent episode on growing your email list to hear all about this.)

Here's some of what I talked about in the episode:

    • The difference between doing a webinar and going live on social media
    • The awkward pain that was my first webinar
    • Why it's gotten so much easier and more pleasant for me
    • Why you won't be as bad at webinars as you think you will
    • 23 ways to make webinars go better for you and your attendees
