Does Metformin cause a Vitamin B12 Deficiency? MUST LISTEN IF DIABETIC! Feb 10, 2019
    Show notes

    Watch this video on youtube.com

If you or a family member have diabetes, chances are metformin is being taken, or at least has been taken in the past.

This medication is metformin, also known by the brand names Glucophage, Glumetza, Fortamet, Riomet, and Glucophage XR. The brand names may vary depending on where in the world you live.

If you or a family member is on this drug, you will want to make sure you are aware of this common vitamin deficiencies it can cause.

Although metformin does a good job lowering blood sugar, by making your insulin more efficient, it may cause various nutrient deficiencies, including a Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Ironically, vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with numbness and tingling in the lower legs, feet and toes. This is something doctors call peripheral neuropathy or diabetic neuropathy in those with diabetes.

Low vitamin B12 levels can also affect the memory so optimizing blood levels is important.

However, it is important to realize that diabetes and elevated blood sugar readings can also cause neuropathy symptoms, so don't assume your neuropathy is 100 % due to vitamin B12 deficiency. It is possible that both diabetes and the b12 deficiency are contributing to neuropathy symptoms. Likewise, diabetes can also affect memory and appears to be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.

If you are on metformin, ask your physician to measure your blood Vitamin B12 level at least once per year.

Most laboratories report vitamin B12 levels between 200 pg/mL and 1100 pg/ml being in the normal range. Many integrative medicine doctors and even many neurologists recommend blood levels of 500 pg/mL or more to optimize nerve and brain health.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can also be tested by measuring one's homocysteine level or one's methylmalonic acid level. Both will be elevated when vitamin B12 is suboptimal. Although sometimes, the vitamin B12 blood test itself may be in a normal range.

Other Nutrients depleted by metformin include

    Vitamin B6 and Co-enzyme Q10

Both of these are important for brain, heart and nerve health.

Vitamin B6 and C0Q10 also can be measured doing a blood test. However, depending on one's insurance, the costs may not be covered so one may consider simply taking the supplements without doing a lab test.

The recommend dosing for these Supplements are as follows:

    Vitamin B12 (500 mcg to 1,000 mcg daily )

Vitamin B6 (25 mg to 100 mg daily)

    Co-enzyme Q10 (50 mg minimum)

These nutrients may be present in a quality multivitamin but chances are, not at the doses advised so a separate supplement may need to be taken.

DISCLAIMER: If you have diabetes, do not stop taking your medication. The information in this video is for informational purposes only. Consult with your own personal physician before stopping any medications.

    Show notes

Dr. Madrid discusses 9 signs and symptoms of a magnesium deficiency and which common medications may be the cause. Doctors estimate up to 4 in 5 people have low magnesium levels. You can also watch the video version of this on www.youtube.com

    These symptoms include:

    -Eyelid twitches

    -Leg cramps

    -Heart Palpitations

    -Menstrual Cramps

    -Overactive Bladder

    -Constipation

    -Tension Headaches

    -Migraine Headaches

    -Esophageal Spasms (?Chest pain)

Many supplement with magnesium chelate (ie magnesium citrate, mag malate, mag fumarate, etc.) at a dose ranging from 125 to 400 mg per day. Magnesium oxide is not usually advised most of the time due to it's overall low absorption. Although, magnesium oxide is helpful for many with constipation.

    Embrace Failure

“Doubt Kills More Dreams than Failure Ever will”

Dr. Madrid discusses how many people are living their lives fearful of failure. Dr. Madrid explains the importance of failure and how without failure once will never succeed. The most successful people all have stories of failure. However, doubt and fear of failure keep millions from achieving their dreams. Failure is not negative! Failure is excellent!

    NBA Game Winning Shots:

Michael Jordan has 19 game winning shots, he is second to Kobe Bryants 25. Kobe Bryant actually has more MISSED game winning shots than Michael Jordan. In either case, both players are amongst the greatest because they were willing to fail in front of millions.

Major League Baseball Home Run Leaders:

Barry Bonds holds the Major League Baseball home run record with 762 but is Number 23 with on the list of strike outs.

Hank Aaron is currently second with 755. I misspoke in the podcast, he is not in the top 100 in strikeouts! However, the lesson does not change. Reggie Jackson actually has more strikeouts than any other MLB player, despite this, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

Interview with Mushroom Expert, Jeff Chilton Dec 16, 2018
    Show notes

Dr. Madrid interviews Jeff Chilton, mushroom expert and “Fun guy”. They discuss the health benefits of specific mushrooms and how they can help enrich your life, lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation.

In 1983, after 10 years of commercial mushroom growing experience, Jeff co-authored and published the classic, bestselling book on small-scale mushroom cultivation, The Mushroom Cultivator. That same year he moved his family to British Columbia to start a mushroom spawn laboratory and small speciality mushroom growing facility. By 1989, after much research, it became clear that many of the specialty mushrooms had medicinal properties and this was the wave of the future.

In 1989 Jeff made his first trip to China to attend the International Society for Mushroom Science’s (ISMS) conference in Nanjing and he discovered the depth of mushroom knowledge and production capacity that China offered.

The relationships Jeff built over the next 10 years laid the foundation that made Nammex (www.nammex.com) a leader in the new category of medicinal mushrooms. This same year, 1989, Nammex was founded. His products can also be purchased retail at www.realmushrooms.com

Control your emotions, it can be the difference between life and death! Dec 01, 2018
    Show notes

Controlling one’s emotions can be difficult at times. As the saying goes, 10% of life is what happens to you while 90% of life is how you react. We can choose the 90%. Many people spend their life blaming others for their problems. If you blame someone else for your problems, you are in essence giving them the power and expecting them to fix your problems. You are now a powerless. Take responsibility for your life, take the “power to fix” back, make smart but frequently hard choices and you’ll see your life will improve. We each have one life to live, create the life you want. Don’t expect somebody else to create your life for you.
