But when the armies marched away, they left behind far more than broken fences and shattered lives. Hospitals overflowed with the dying. Mass graves disappeared beneath the earth. Today, visitors still report phantom soldiers, silent field hospitals, mysterious figures among the rocks of Devil's Den, and an elevator that seems to open onto the summer of 1863.
