Part 2 of Stress, human behaviour and self-regulation with Dr Stuart Shanker May 13, 2022
    Show notes

This is part 2 of the episode with Dr Stuart Shanker - part 1 was episode 87 released last week.
Dr Stuart Shanker is the visionary founder of the MEHRIT Centre, an organisation dedicated to understanding how stress affects human behaviour and to help both kids and adults self-regulate how they respond to stress in order to improve their lives. This turned out to be an absolutely fascinating conversation that was so good I broke it into 2 parts.
Stuart is the author of the Self-Reg trilogy: Calm, Alert and Learning: Classroom Strategies for Self-Regulation (Pearson 2012), Self-Reg: How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Successfully Engage with Life (Penguin 2016); Reframed: Self-Reg for a Just Society (UofT Press 2020). And with Susan Hopkins, Self-Reg Schools: A Handbook for Educators (Pearson 2019).
Here is a link to the MEHRIT centre - make sure you check out their resources section and blog. Here is also a link to self-reg global, which is the international work that they do.

The impact of Omega-3 fatty acids on brain structure and function and overall metabolic health May 10, 2022
    Show notes

This episode looks at a recent randomised controlled trial in humans on the impact of Omega-3 fatty acids on brain structure and function and overall metabolic health. It was a beautifully designed study which, for me, absolutely puts an end to the debate on whether we should be supplementing with Omega 3 fatty acids.

Hippocracy - how Doctors are betraying their Hippocratic Oath with Professor Rachelle Buchbinder Apr 29, 2022
    Show notes

Professor Rachelle Buchbinder is an Australian NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow. She has been the Director of the Monash Department of Clinical Epidemiology since its inception in 2001 and a Professor in the Monash University Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine since 2007. She is a rheumatologist and clinical epidemiologist who combines clinical practice with research in a wide range of multidisciplinary projects relating to arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.
Rachelle and her colleague Ian Harris have written a brilliant book called Hippocrasy, which reveals the true state of modern medicine and how doctors are letting their patients down.
This powerful exposé reveals the tests, drugs and treatments that provide little or no benefit for patients and the inherent problem of a medical system based on treating rather than preventing illness. The book also provides tips to empower patients – do I really need this treatment? What are the risks? Are there simpler, safer options? What happens if I do nothing? Plus solutions to help restructure how medicine is delivered to help doctors live up to their Hippocratic Oath.
Make sure you buy this brilliant book.

Finding Your Purpose with Nick Lee, OAM Apr 22, 2022
    Show notes

With a beautiful family and working as a director of multi-national consumer goods company, Nick Lee had good reason to be happy and optimistic about his future. That changed in an instant when his wife Jodi was diagnosed with stage IV bowel cancer at the age of 39. After battling with the disease for 2 years, Jodi passed away in 2010.
After Jodi’s death Nick made the brave decision to leave his job and use his experience to do all he could to stop others suffering a similar experience. He established The Jodi Lee Foundation to inspire others to protect themselves against bowel cancer and make positive choices to improve their health. The work of the Foundation has saved many Australian lives.
In today's podcast, we talk about Nick's experiences and zero in on the role of purpose in getting through tough times.
If you'd like to get involved in the foundation, you can find it here.
