Then Shawn discusses the launch of John Jennings' Megascope imprint for Abrams, as well as DC Comics' Superman Heroes #1, before Keith and Dominic enter an extended discussion about Toy Fair, which Dominic attended last year, and Keith's unhealthy action figure habit. Also, Cassandra Cain's return as Batgirl in DCeased: Unkillables, as well as Daniel Pemberton's Birds of Prey original score, because this is now a Birds of Prey podcast.

This week on Hard NOC Life, Dominic and Keith continue their discussion of Birds of Prey and share their thoughts on Robert Pattinson as Batman. Later, Friend of the NOC Preeti Chhibber returns to the show to talk about a couple of new Dev Patel movie trailers.

The hosts continue to heap praise upon Cathy Yan's sort of retitled Birds of Prey while digging in to some of the criticisms levied against the film, including its depiction of Cassandra Cain. Then, they break down Matt Reeves' The Batman tease allowing Keith to explain his favorite moments in the Batman movie news cycle. Later in the show, Keith chats with author and Desi Geek Girls co-host Preeti Chhibber about Dev Patel's forthcoming movies, The Green Knight and The Personal History of David Copperfield.

    180. 'Birds of Prey' and a Fantabulous Night at the Oscars Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

On a brand new episode of Hard NOC Life, Dominic and Keith celebrate the best DC movie ever made, Birds of Prey (that's right, we said it!)

Dominic explains why BoP is the Asian American superhero movie he's always wanted while Keith battles against many of the criticisms against the film. They also try to understand why the movie didn't resonate with the moviegoing audience and why that's fueling some bad faith arguments on the internet. They also celebrate Parasite's historic Oscar wins.

With Birds of Prey ready to break box office records, and a brand new YA graphic novel from DC Comics, the shadow of Cassandra Cain descends upon a brand new episode of Hard NOC Life!

Dominic and Keith share their excitement for this weekend's premiere of Birds of Prey in theaters by recounting their favorite Asian Batgirl stories. Then, Keith sits down with novelist Sarah Kuhn, author of the Heroine Complex series, to discuss writing Shadow of the Batgirl, and realizing her dream to write a Cassandra Cain Batgirl story.

    178. Engaging with 'Star Trek: Picard' Jan 28, 2020
    Show notes

On a new episode of Hard NOC Life, Dominic, Shawn, and Keith return to the Final Frontier and review the CBS All Access Original Series, Star Trek: Picard.

Before they dive into their thoughts on Picard, the crew share some news -- Shawn just completed the sixth annual Black Comix Arts Festival in San Francisco, while Dominic gives an update on the podcast, Occupy Me. Then they get into more info about the leaked details from Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX script, including the concept art. This naturally leads to a discussion about JJ Abrams and his film-making style, including the 2009 Star Trek. They also get in to what's wrong with R-rated Trek and why Discovery isn't everyone's cup of tea. When they get to Star Trek: Picard, though the consensus is that it's a good show, its racial dynamics/politics could use some work. Still, it's nice to have Trek back firmly in the 24th century! So grab a cup of Earl Grey, decaf and "make it so!"

What's #NerdPoppin this week: For Shawn, it's the Afrofuturist horror-comedy graphic novel, BTTM FDRS by Ezra Clayton Daniels and Ben Passmore. Meanwhile, Dominic is wrapped up in the Senate impeachment trial, and Keith enjoyed the Green Arrow and the Canaries backdoor pilot more than he thought he would.

    177. Podcast on Infinite Earths Jan 20, 2020
    Show notes

It's a Post-Crisis Hard NOC Life this week as Dominic and Keith break down the epic, five-episode crossover on The CW.

Last week, The CW pulled off one of the most improbable events in recent memory. Mashing up five different superhero shows (six, counting Black Lightning), the annual crossover event not only tied all of the CW-verse shows into a single universe, it also canonized nearly every live action incarnation of DC Comics characters from across the decades. The CW was basically able to pull off the DC Cinematic Multiverse that Keith has been championing for years! Now if only they'd #ReleaseTheCrisisCut!

Tune in for Keith and Dominic's favorite moments from Crisis on Infinite Earths as well as some discussion of the leaked details from Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX script.

    176. Oscar Snubs and Super Villains Jan 14, 2020
    Show notes

On Hard NOC Life this week, Dominic and Keith share their thoughts on the Academy Award nominations and break down the latest superhero movie trailers.

Since Hollywood is obsessed with reboots, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to reboot "Oscars So White" after a couple years of progress. And while Black Panther broke the superhero glass ceiling last year, the Academy's love for Joker feels a little retrograde. Still, if you were an actor of color or a female director, chances are you weren't invited to the Oscar party. After the awards talk, the hosts break down the latest superhero movie trailers -- namely, Birds of Prey and the Is-It-In-The-MCU-Or-Not Morbius movie. Then, they attempt to figure out the Doctor Strange director shakeup and why Jessica Henwick was passed over for the role of Rey in Star Wars.

Speaking of Jessica, what's Nerd Poppin for Dominic is the filming of Matrix 4 in the Bay Area. Meanwhile, Keith has been binge-watching Terrace House on Netflix.

    175. Star Wars Endgame Jan 07, 2020
    Show notes

Hard NOC Life is back and all-new for 2020! Dominic and Keith return to wrap up their tour through the galaxy far, far away by sharing their thoughts on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Instead of breaking down the film's plotholes and shortcomings, they decide to compare and contrast Rise of Skywalker to other 2019 pop cultural landmarks. Jumping off a recent post by Keith, they examine how TROS and Watchmen on HBO share a lot of overlap in approach, if not execution. Similarly, Rise is the culmination of a nine-movie saga, but was it as effective as Avengers: Endgame as the culmination of a ten-year run of box office dominance? Also, how did The Mandalorian on Disney+ capture the Star Wars zeitgeist and seemingly eclipse the franchise's capper in the public imagination?

Plus what's Nerd Poppin: for Dominic, it's the New Mutants trailer and for Keith it's the Golden Globes and the beginning of Award Season in Hollywood -- which allows him to add to his Superhero Oscar catalog.

    173. The Last Rogue Force Awakens One Solo Jedi Dec 16, 2019
    Show notes

With Rise of Skywalker and the end of the Skywalker Saga at the end of the month to look forward to, Hard NOC Life is going to be a Star Wars podcast for the month of December. Because there aren't enough Star Wars podcasts on the internet! Each week, Dominic and Keith will be breaking down a different trilogy that make up the beloved Star Wars franchise.

This week, they are joined by Britney Monae to break down the Star Wars films in the Disney canon. Well, that's what they were going to do. Instead, the episode is mainly a debate about the merits of The Last Jedi because of course it is. Still, tune in to hear our hosts share their thoughts about the current era of Star Wars, plus each of their Top Ten rankings of the movies heading into The Rise of Skywalker this weekend.
