BONUS EPISODE |The Fundamentals of Vitamin E Jan 15, 2022
    Show notes

Today we’re going to talk about all things vitamin E. And there’s no better person to address that question than the Linus Pauling Institute’s own “goddess” of vitamin E, Dr. Maret Traber. Like me, Dr. Traber is also a professor in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She is also a principal investigator and the Ava Helen Pauling Endowed Professor at the Linus Pauling Institute. Dr. Traber’s research focuses on understanding how best to define vitamin E requirements. This includes some fundamental as seemingly basic questions like why do we need it and how much do we need to stay in good health? GW Integrative Medicine podcast co-host Leigh Frame, PhD, MHS, executive director of the GW Office of Integrative Medicine & Health, is joined by guest co-host Emily Ho, PhD, Director of the Linus Pauling Institute and a professor in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. GW and LPI is doing a series of podcasts on nutrition topics LPI is a world leader in the study of micronutrients, phytochemicals, and other dietary factors, and the role these compounds can play in promoting optimum health or preventing and treating disease. Major areas of research include approaches to combat aging, metabolic dysfunction, and neurodegenerative disease. ◘ Related Content Linus Pauling Institute lpi.oregonstate.edu/ Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Information Center https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic Dr. Traber's bio and Google Scholar profile https://bit.ly/3tu2AUc ◘ Transcript https://bit.ly/3rixRs5 ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. What Docs Do When They Get Sick Dec 30, 2021
    Show notes

All working parents know that “all kids get sick” is the mother of all truisms. But what do doctors and other health care providers do when they or their loved ones come down with a cold, tummy ache, or something more serious? Today, we get to be a fly on the wall for a free-wheeling conversation between physicians Marianna Shimelfarb, MD, who specializes in Integrative Family Medicine, and Mikhail “Misha” Kogan, medical director of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine and geriatrician with GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW University Hospital. These long-time friends let loose on everything, from kids with bloody head injuries requiring sutures to one of them being recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. They talk about conventional modalities vs. integrative; and why physicians fear losing their own agency when they get sick, being subject to someone else making decisions, and more. Dr. Shimmelfarb has a passion for providing quality care with an integrative approach. She practices patient-centered care and uses her knowledge of evidence-based complementary medicine treatments in combination with her training as an allopathic physician. Dr. Shimmelfarb is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. She is the recipient of several teaching awards, including Preceptor of the Year Award at the NYU College of Nursing. ◘ Transcript bit.ly/3zelyiw ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Helping Health Care Workers Cope with Burnout Oct 29, 2021
    Show notes

Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, those working in the health care field were found to be more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and job dissatisfaction, which can lead to adverse outcomes for healthcare workers as well as the patients and communities they serve. Some experts increasingly regard suicide as an “occupational hazard” of practicing medicine or nursing. We talk about the Resiliency & Well-being Center recently launched by the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences to educate health-care workers, trainees, and staff about stress management, provide behavioral health services, and restructure SMHS’ wellness initiatives from top to bottom. Our guest is Lorenzo Norris, MD, the center’s medical director and Chief Wellness Officer for the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences, GW Medical Faculty Associates, and GWU Hospital. ◘ Related content GW Resiliency & Well-being Center https://rwc.smhs.gwu.edu/ Article: GW Launches Resiliency & Well-Being Center https://rwc.smhs.gwu.edu/news/gw-launches-resiliency-well-being-center-0 KFF/The Washington Post Frontline Health Care Workers Survey https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/poll-finding/kff-washington-post-health-care-workers/ Medical burnout: Breaking bad https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/medical-burnout-breaking-bad ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-helping-health-care-workers-cope-burnout-gw-office-of/?published=t ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Demystifing Medical Cannabis & CBD for Clinicians & Consumers Sep 30, 2021
    Show notes

Marijuana (cannabis) has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, but it has been illegal in the United States for most of our lives. Almost all states have now legalized its medical use, and many consumers and health professionals are exploring it as an alternative to conventional treatments. There’s substantial evidence that marijuana is a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain, chemo side effects, sleep and mood disorders, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, among others. But there’s also misinformation about marijuana on social media. And most clinicians have limited knowledge on the subject, while dispensary staff (aka “budtenders”) lack medical training. GW Integrative Medicine co-host Mikhail Kogan, MD, a renowned expert on Integrative Medicine, medical cannabis, and CBD, along with Joan Liebmann-Smith, PhD, hope to change that with their new book—“Medical Marijuana: Dr. Kogan's Evidence-based Guide to the Health Benefits of Cannabis and CBD” with forward by Dr. Andrew Weil. Dr. Liebmann-Smith is an award-winning medical writer, medical editor, and medical sociologist. She’s written 5 books on various healthcare topics, and her articles have appeared in numerous national print and online publications, including AARP Bulletin, Newsweek, and the Huffington Post. She is also a consulting editor for Memorial Sloan Kettering’s dermatology service. ◘ Related content Medical Marijuana: Dr. Kogan's Evidence-based Guide to the Health Benefits of Cannabis and CBD by Mikhail Kogan, MD, and Joan Liebmann-Smith, PhD https://bit.ly/3D8rIBR 2017 National Academy of Sciences report on "The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research." bit.ly/2H0DnJa The International Cannabinoid Research Society, (ICRS), is a source for impartial information on cannabis and the cannabinoids that provides an open forum for researchers to meet and discuss their research. icrs.co/ Dr. Kogan's interview with Dr. Donald Abrams, internationally known medical cannabis expert bit.ly/38NllWQ Dr. Kogan's interview on Medical Cannabis for Chronic Pain Guidelines https://bit.ly/3F2n4Xx ◘ Transcript https://bit.ly/3F2huVh ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
