Celebrating 100 Episodes—Give or Take an Episode! Apr 03, 2025
    Show notes

This is the podcast’s 100th episode! (Give or take an ICYMI episode.) We are coming full circle with today’s guest—John Pan, MD ’70, RESD ’74, the Father of Integrative Medicine at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS), the Office’s founding medical director, and the founder of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine. Sitting in are co-hosts Dr. Leigh Frame, Dr. Misha Kogan, and Janette Rodrigues. Historically, GW was on the leading edge of the Integrative Medicine movement. Early on, the SMHS recognized the value of combining conventional and complementary medical therapies into health care. In 1998, Dr. Pan, then a clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, founded the GW Center for Integrative Medicine, one of the first of its kind to be established at an academic medical institution. Dr. Frame is now the Chief Wellness Officer of GW Medicine, Executive Director of the Office of Integrative Medicine & Health, Director/Research Director of the GW Resiliency & Well-being Center, Associate Professor in the Departments of Clinical Research & Leadership and Physician Assistant Studies and co-director of the Frame-Corr Lab here at GW. Dr. Kogan is the Chief Medical Office of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine, Associate Professor of Medicine here at GW, Founder of the nonprofit Access to Integrative Medicine Health Institute, and author of "Medical Marijuana: Dr. Kogan's Evidence-Based Guide to the Health Benefits of Cannabis and CBD." ◘ Transcript bit.ly/3JoA2mz ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Will MoCRA Make Cosmetics & Grooming Products Safer? Jan 22, 2025
    Show notes

The cosmetics and grooming products industry is like the wild wild West. Until recently, the regulatory system failed to keep consumers safe from toxicants that likely increase their offspring’s “risks of cancer, fertility issues, neurological deficits, and immune dysfunction.” And then came the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022, or MoCRA. Today, we talk about MoCRA with subject matter expert Dahlia Kelada, founder/CEO of TopicalFormulator.com and Salve Naturals & Native Earth. When Congress passed the new law, it did so with the goal to help ensure the safety of multiple cosmetic products many consumers use daily. MoCRA went into effect in late December 2024. Dahlia is a graduate of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she earned a Master of Science in Health Science with a focus in Integrative Medicine. She has 20+ years of product development/commercialization experience supporting over 80 brands. Salve Naturals is a national all-natural and organic topical medicine company that was the first to make 100% natural, plant-based topical medicines that are registered with the FDA as OTCs. MoCRA is the most significant expansion of U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s authority to regulate cosmetics since the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act was passed in 1938. But how will it effect consumers and producers? ◘ Related Links FDA Press Release: Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA) https://bit.ly/42jhyOx New Year, Same MoCRA: FDA Cosmetic Requirements as of January 1, 2025 https://bit.ly/40uc4h4 MoCRA Q&A https://bit.ly/42iTXxn MoCRA Increases FDA Oversight of the Cosmetics Industry https://bit.ly/40IFSYY Dahlia Kelada https://bit.ly/4g3CwEl ◘ Transcript https://bit.ly/3JoA2mz ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Today we’re going to talk about broccoli, sulforaphane, and combating inflammation, as well as the new research and education discipline of microbes and social equity, with Sue Ishaq, PhD, founder of the Microbes and Social Equity Working Group, Principal Investigator at the Ishaq Lab, and assistant professor of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Maine School of Food and Agriculture. Over the years, Dr. Ishaq's research has gone from wild animal gut microbiomes, to soils, to buildings, and back to the gut. Since 2019, her lab in Maine has focused on host-associated microbial communities in animals and humans, and in particular, how host and microbes interact in the gut and can be harnessed to reduce inflammation.
