Breaking the Cycle of Physician Burnout Feb 29, 2020
    Show notes

Burnout is more prevalent among healthcare and health sciences workers, professionals, and trainees than among the general U.S. population. Those working in the healthcare field are more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and job dissatisfaction, which can lead to adverse outcomes for healthcare workers as well as the patients and communities they serve. Evidence shows, however, that effective wellness programming and strong institutional leadership committed to a culture of wellness can make a difference. That's why GW launched the GWell Center for Healthcare Professionals, which is led by Kaylan Baban, MD, MPH, the inaugural chief wellness officer for GW Hospital, GW Medical Faculty Associates, and the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. An assistant professor of Medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr. Baban is also the director, Lifestyle Medicine Program, at GW Medical Faculty Associates. She joined us on the latest episode of the GW Integrative Medicine podcast to talk about the GWell Center, the need nationally for initiatives that support those working in health care in all capacities, and why this is so personal for her. ◘ Related content 3rd Annual Sung Symposium: Wellness & Longevity http://bit.ly/sung2020 Kaylan Baban, MD, MPH, Tapped to Serve as Chief Wellness Officer for GW’s Medical Enterprise http://bit.ly/2TcHw29 The GWell Center for Healthcare Professionals https://smhs.gwu.edu/wellness/ Wellness Resources for GW Students, Residents, Fellows, Faculty, Staff, & Alumni https://smhs.gwu.edu/wellness/wellness/resources List of Wellness Books, Podcasts, Websites, Courses & Conferences (Curated by Dr. Kaylan Baban) https://guides.himmelfarb.gwu.edu/mindfulness/booksandmore Clinician Well-Being Knowledge Hub https://nam.edu/clinicianwellbeing/ ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-breaking-cycle-physician-burnout-gw-office-of/?published=t ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Beyond the Calories—Is the Problem in the Processing? Jan 30, 2020
    Show notes

In the United States, six in 10 Americans live with at least one chronic disease, like heart disease and stroke, cancer, or diabetes. These and other chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in America, and they are also a leading driver of health care costs. Today, we talk to nutrition scientist Leigh A. Frame, PhD, MHS, and gastroenterologist Janese Laster, MD, about their review of trends in dietary patterns, ultra-processed foods, chronic disease, and mortality in the U.S. Drs. Laster and Frame are the co-authors of "Beyond the Calories—Is the Problem in the Processing?" The review was recently published in the journal Current Treatment Options in Gastroenterology. Dr. Laster is board-certified in Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, and Obesity Medicine, Dr. Laster’s research focus is on nutrition and obesity medicine within the field of Gastroenterology. She is a recent Nestle Nutrition Fellow, member of The Obesity Society and the American College of Gastroenterology, and a Physician Nutrition Specialist diplomate. Dr. Frame is director of the GW Integrative Medicine Programs and executive director of the GW Office of Integrative Medicine and Health. She has used her wide-ranging experience in biomedical research (from wet bench to clinical research) to oversee research programs, including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Parkinson's Disease Biomarkers Program. ◘ Related content Beyond the Calories—Is the Problem in the Processing? https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11938-019-00246-1?shared-article-renderer The Obesity Action Coalition https://www.obesityaction.org/ The Obesity Algorithm®—a set of obesity treatment guidelines https://obesitymedicine.org/obesity-algorithm/ CDC: Overweight & Obesity https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-beyond-caloriesis-problem-processing-gw-office-of/?published=t ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. The Power of Neuromuscular Therapy Jul 30, 2019
    Show notes

Today we’re talking about bodywork, specifically neuromuscular therapy, with Elizabeth Goldberg, a licensed massage therapist and wellness coach. Neuromuscular therapy, sometimes called trigger-point massage, is a form of soft tissue manipulation that aims to treat underlying causes of chronic pain involving the muscular and nervous systems. This medically-oriented form of massage therapy addresses trigger points (tender muscles points), circulation, nerve compression, postural issues, and biomechanical problems that can be caused by repetitive movement injuries. By working with incredible practitioners, Elizabeth was able to not only relieve the pain in her back but also developed a new relationship with her body and mind. She believes strongly in the power of therapeutic bodywork. Elizabeth practices at Freed Bodyworks on Capitol Hill, and she first came to massage as a client with a repetitive stress injury. ◘ Related Content Controlled pilot study of the effects of Neuromuscular Therapy in patients with Parkinson’s disease https://www.researchgate.net/publication/6751675_Controlled_pilot_study_of_the_effects_of_Neuromuscular_Therapy_in_patients_with_Parkinson's_disease Effect of ischemic compression on trigger points in the neck and shoulder muscles in office workers: a cohort study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23993756 The impact of latent trigger points on regional muscle function https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18765139 Investigating Neuromuscular Therapy: Efficacy of Application on Chronic Pain (Case Report) https://cns.edu/images/pdfs/research/Depression%20and%20Fatigue.pdf Responsiveness of myofascial trigger points to single and multiple trigger point release massages – a randomized, placebo controlled trial https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5561477/ ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-power-neuromuscular-therapy-gw-office-of/?published=t ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
