Episode #46: No-risk Ranching: Grazing on Leased Land with Greg Judy Oct 23, 2026
    Show notes

In 1999, Greg Judy was deep in debt and close to losing the family farm. Then he started leasing idle land and custom grazing other people’s cattle, and within three years he paid off his house and farm. Today, his livestock have bought seven farms, and Greg trains the next generation of graziers through his year-long internship program. Keith Berns and Greg talk about building relationships with landowners, running sheep and cattle together on one hot wire, using cover crops as a step toward perennial pasture, and marketing direct to customers who want to see you succeed.Hear Greg in person as keynote speaker at the Southeast Kansas Soil Health Conference, December 3–4 in Iola, Kansas. Episode #45: A Space Shuttle Engineer's Biological Approach to Growing Grapes with Patrick Kavanaugh Oct 09, 2026
    Show notes

Patrick Cavanaugh spent 13 years as an engineer on the space shuttle program, and today he leads soil and vine health at Union Grove Farm in North Carolina. Keith Berns and Patrick talk about how Union Grove is rebuilding degraded farm ground with vermicompost extracts, cover crops, and rotationally grazed sheep, and how Patrick measures whether the soil is getting better. The ideas apply to any farm, not just vineyards. Join us at Union Grove for the Regenerative Nexus, November 10–12, and sign up here: https://greencover.com/pages/events/r...

Episode #44: Juggling Almonds, Olives, Sheep and 8,000 hens with Benina Montes Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

Along with her family, Benina Montes of Burroughs Family Farms runs the world's first regenerative organic certified almond orchard, producing walnuts, olives, year-round sheep, and 8,000 laying hens in California's Central Valley. She and Keith talk about how a catch frame harvester lets her keep the orchard floor covered, how cover crops and grazing cut her water use by about 30%, and how she markets her almonds, almond butter, and eggs directly instead of selling into the commodity market. In honor of the International Year of the Woman Farmer, Benina also shares what she's learned about working across generations and raising kids who might one day come back to the farm. Check out her products at https://burroughsfamilyfarms.com/ and visit https://greencover.com/ to build a cover crop mix for your own orchard or pasture.

Episode #43: How Plants and Microbes Work Together in Harsh Environments with Kevin Elmy Sep 11, 2026
    Show notes

Kevin Elmy joins the podcast to share how he turned a sandy, worn-out quarter section in Saskatchewan into 26+ inches of rich topsoil, using winter cereals, cover crops, and livestock instead of synthetic inputs. He digs into practical wins any farmer can try this fall — interseeding winter triticale with durum, letting cover crops do their job early instead of chasing a big biomass at season's end, and reading soil biology signals (like weeds and blackberry brush) instead of reaching for another chemical fix. Kevin also explains why deeper, healthier root zones make "mining the soil" a myth, and why nature works in teams, not silver bullets. He closes with simple advice for anyone starting out: find a mentor group, commit to one field for three to five years, and always keep something green and growing. You can find Kevin's book on Cover Cropping in Western Canada here: https://www.amazon.com/Cover-Cropping-Western-Canada-Kevin-ebook/dp/B08K9BXXZ4?ref_=ast_author_dp&th=1&psc=1Green Cover's book on the basics of cover crops: https://greencover.com/pages/books-and-courses

Episode #42: Applying the Soil Health Principles Across Various Landscapes Aug 28, 2026
    Show notes

Podcast host Keith Berns sits down with his brother and Green Cover co-founder, Brian Berns, Green Cover sales rep Zach Louk and Green Cover's Contract Seed Production Manager, Scott Ravenkamp to describe how each of the six Soil Health Principles is applied on each of their vastly different operations.

Episode #41: The Fertility Hiding in Your Crop Residue — And How to Unlock It with David Olson Aug 13, 2026
    Show notes

A single Nebraska field trial revealed that fall-applied biology can fix nitrogen straight out of the air and unlock phosphorus already locked in the soil — turning $30 worth of product into over $450 in nutrient value. Keith Berns sits down with David Olson of Sustainable Growing Solutions to break down the science behind the Decomposer and HyprCycle+ program, from how saprophytic fungi break down lignin and cellulose to why fall is the best window all year to build a fungal population in your soil. If you're tired of paying for fertility your residue could be generating for free, this episode walks through the data.

Episode #40: Cutting the Nitrogen Bill with Legumes and Microbes Aug 01, 2026
    Show notes

Nitrogen fertilizer costs U.S. farmers $5 billion a year — but a good chunk of it is sitting in the atmosphere for free. Zach Lauck joins Keith to break down which legumes actually pull their weight (hairy vetch, winter peas, clovers), why timing and planting depth make or break them, and how new inoculants and free-living microbes can fix nitrogen even without a legume in the mix. If you're looking to cut input costs without cutting corners, this one's for you.

Episode #39: Why You Should Be Running On-Farm Test Plots Jul 24, 2026
    Show notes

Green Cover's Nathan Choat joins Keith to explain why the company runs hundreds of test plots every year — and why every farmer should be running small trials on their own ground, too. They dig into corn and soybean interseeding, nutrient cycling data, and why what works at someone else's field day might not work on your farm. Green Cover's summer field days are August 4th and 5th in Bladen, Nebraska — sign up free: https://greencover.com/pages/events/green-cover-summer-field-day-1

Episode #38: The Forages Behind Steakhouse-Quality, Medicinal Beef with Karl Palmberg Jul 17, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode of the Green Cover Podcast, host Keith Berns talks with Karl Palmberg, a former F-16 pilot turned grass-fed beef producer in Larchwood, Iowa, about building a regenerative cattle operation from the ground up. Karl breaks down how he uses cover crops, baleage, and even carefully-timed corn silage to hit a 1:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in his beef (versus roughly 10:1 for typical feedlot beef), along with his approach to genetics, herd size, and direct-to-consumer marketing. He also shares hands-on experience with virtual fencing including trialing collars from two different companies and the time saved from implementing the collars. You can purchase beef directly from Karl and his family through their website: https://sunlightandrain.com/Learn more about nutrient density from Dr. Stephan van Vliet: https://stephanvanvliet.com/nutrient-...Check out Green Cover's SmartMix Calculator to design custom cover crop mixes: https://smartmix.greencoverseed.com/Speak with a Green Cover sales representative at 402-469-6784.

Episode #37: 45Z Explained: How Farmers Can Get Paid for Soil Health Practices with Mitchell Hora Jul 09, 2026
    Show notes

After nearly four years of delays, the USDA has finalized guidance for the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit, and it's opening up real financial opportunities for corn and soybean farmers. Mitchell Hora, seventh-generation Iowa farmer and founder of Continuum Ag, breaks down how a farm's Carbon Intensity (CI) score works and how lowering it through cover crops, no-till, and better nitrogen management can add up to premiums of 10-50 cents per bushel on corn. We cover what documentation you need, how the audit process actually works, and why farmers who already delivered 2025 crop into the biofuel supply chain need to act now. Mitchell also shares how to calculate your farm's CI score for free at https://topsoil.ag/, so you can find out if this program is worth pursuing on your own operation. As Mitchell notes, the program is still in its early stages, with real uncertainties around exactly how much ethanol plants will share with farmers, whether nearby plants will participate at all and other risks but overall the program opens up new opportunity that could radically increase adoption of soil health practices across the US.
