Gospel for the Culture with D. Danyelle Thomas

Gospel for the Culture is a public-intellectual library in audio form.

Hosted by writer and public theologian D. Danyelle Thomas, each episode is a literary essay spoken aloud—an invitation to think through race, faith, history, culture, memory, power, desire, and the stories that shape public life.

Organized into collections like American Mythology, Empire State of Mind, American Memory, Algorithmic Economies, Songversations, and Office Hours with the Dean, the show moves between cultural criticism, theology, political history, personal reflection, and Black intellectual tradition without chasing the news cycle or forcing every thought into a hot take.

This is not a podcast designed to tell you what to think.

It is a place to reconsider what we’ve inherited, ask the questions we were taught not to ask, and sit in good company while we think them through.

Come be in good company while you reconsider.

Office Hours with the Dean: Meet Cute Sep 21, 2026
    Show notes

What does it mean to desire without apologizing for it? In this installment of Office Hours with the Dean, Danyelle Thomas reflects on eight years of singleness, purity culture, romantic agency, digital intimacy, and the kind of meet-cute she actually wants: one where a man encounters her mind before he encounters her body. Moving from Threads to the Song of Songs, she reclaims feminine desire as active, searching, embodied, and narratively powerful. The woman of the text does not wait passively to be chosen. She wants. She seeks. She goes looking. This is not a story about begging to be desired. It is a story about choosing to want—and remaining open to what might meet you there. Come be in good company while you reconsider.

    American Memory: Everybody’s Slavin’ & Prayin’ Sep 20, 2026
    Show notes

“Everybody enslaved somebody” is the kind of sentence that is true enough to end a conversation and false enough to prevent understanding. You can read the text of this episode on UnfitChristian.com In this selection from the American Memory Collection, Passuh Dany examines what gets lost when the racialized hereditary chattel slavery of the Atlantic world is flattened into a generic human history of captivity. Moving through plantation nostalgia, labor and capital, the pseudoscience of Drapetomania, racial memory, Christian formation, and the ongoing struggle over how America remembers itself, she asks what happens when the descendants of the enslaved are expected to “get over” a history the nation has never fully told the truth about. But this is not only an essay about what slavery did. It is also about what survived it: Black memory, theological imagination, spiritual agency, and a Christianity that enslaved people refused to leave entirely in the hands of enslavers. What if the more interesting question is not simply “Where was God during slavery?” but “How did enslaved Black people rescue Christianity from slavery?” History. Theology. Politics. Memory. Come be in good company while you reconsider.

Songversations: Michael & Joe — The Ambitions of the Family Patriarch Sep 19, 2026

In this selection from the Songversation Collection Passuh D. Danyelle Thomas examines Michael Jackson, Joe Jackson, patriarchal family systems, religious authority, reproductive labor, and the transformation of children into economic infrastructure. You can read the companion essay in the written library over on UnfitChristian.com: https://www.unfitchristian.com/michael-joe-the-ambitions-of-the-family-patriarch/

Empire State of Mind: Mutha is Only Half a Word! Sep 16, 2026
    Show notes

Welcome to the Empire State of Mind collection. Behind the reference desk, your friendly librarian has pulled today’s selection: Mutha Is Only Half a Word. Nigga is only half the story. What becomes of a people whose racial category entered the social imagination before their personhood did? In this public lecture, D. Danyelle Thomas considers how empire compresses whole worlds into language—how words like ghetto, bonnet, durag, and nigga can carry histories of class, anti-Blackness, white gaze, domination, memory, and resistance. The slur does not invent the worldview. It condenses it. From the language of empire to the language of kinship, from racial naming to Black self-articulation, this essay asks what words remember—and who gets to claim authorship over their meaning. Come be in good company while you reconsider. Thank you for being a friend of my mind.

Grand Opening: Gospel for the Culture Becomes a Public Library Sep 16, 2026
    Show notes

Welcome to the grand opening of the Gospel for the Culture Public Library.

For years, D. Danyelle Thomas has written publicly about faith, race, history, culture, and the stories that shape human life. Now the page becomes embodied—spoken, breathed, and offered aloud.

Each episode is a literary essay performed as a public lecture for people who want company while they think. There is no weekly race against the algorithm here. No demand that you agree. No promise to tell you what to think.

Instead, this library asks us to reconsider: the stories we inherited as history, patriotism, common sense, doctrine, and truth; the systems we have confused with God; and the questions we were taught were too dangerous to ask.

Danyelle’s work begins with a simple moral concern: What do our beliefs do to actual human beings?

You do not have to think like her. You are simply invited to think with her.

    Welcome in.

    #GodSawMe | Chapter 3: The Preacher's Kid Aug 07, 2024
    Show notes

On this episode of Gospel for the Culture, you’ll meet Chapter 3: The Preacher’s Kid, a personal essay of growing up in the very different worlds of my Baptist preacher Dad, my Pentecostal Mommy, and building my experience of God in between. It is a deeply vulnerable narrative about my master wound and all of its contradictions. But most importantly, it is a celebration of all that conspired to bring me to the point of my public work with Unfit Christian and leading others to an experience of God that sees (and loves) the whole of them fearlessly. It is my manifesto that there is room at the cross for all of us, no matter how radically different our approach to God may be. #GodSawMe | Chapter 2: White Man's Religion Jul 31, 2024
    Show notes

As someone deeply aware of the history of racism, classism, death, and oppression tied to Christianity, why do I still identify as a Christian, especially as a conscious Black woman? Can deconstruction and decolonization redeem such a faith? These questions are at the heart of my book, The Day God Saw Me as Black. In this episode of Gospel for the Culture, I introduce you to Chapter 2: White Man’s Religion. This central essay addresses the burning question often linked to my work: why remain committed to a faith so steeped in supremacist harm? I share my journey through compulsory Black Christianity, reconciling my gender, race, and sexuality with my faith, and how shifting my personal dogma led to liberation. Join me as I explore faith as an act of resistance against white supremacy. Preorder the book now: www.godsawme.com Audiobook available for pre-save on Spotify and Audible

We begin with Chapter 6, “Will There Be One?”—an in-depth look at the future of the Black Church and its struggle with systemic oppression.
