So we’ve had an eventful day! We discovered that all the major podcast services had suddenly lost a good half of the first season of our show. Upon digging deeper, we discovered that WordPress limits its RSS feed capability to only 150 episodes, and since we’ve crossed that number, every new episode we release will drop an episode off the feed. Obviously we don’t want this, because we want new fans to be able to start from the beginning and old fans to be able to go back and listen to it from the start if they want.
Fixing this within WordPress would require a business plan, which costs $25 a month. That’s a lot for a podcast we don’t make any money on. So we’ve decided to migrate to Pinecast, a service that will also add a lot of functionality that makes the process easier on our end and is only $10 a month.
We’re happy to pay that hosting fee, but if you want to help us out with hosting costs, we aren’t going to say no. Pinecast also includes a “Tip Jar” function over at https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/gilmore-ball-z where you can kick us a few bucks if you want to help. We’re not going to aggressively market for that, because we feel like the Gohan and Rory Fund is more important, but the option is there if you’re interested.
Paige has time chamber questions Grant can’t answer, Amy Sherman-Palladino leaves a mess for someone else to clean up, and Trunks almost breaks the fourth wall to explain how Dragon Ball fights work.
Despite big Buu developments and the wackiest hijinks the Pallidinos could throw at us, Grant and Paige still struggle to find anything to say about episodes of Dragon Ball and Gilmore Girls that couldn’t find their pacing.
Gohan and Rory Fund donor and friend of the show James G joined us to talk about Buu’s growth, revel in some (fictional) hospitalization, and negotiate the nuances of one of Gilmore Girls’ least popular plot points.
Paige actually sees some of the point of Majin Buu, Dragon Ball finally figured out playing characters off each other, and a Gilmore guy gets a better send off than either of us expected.
Content warning: This week, both Gilmore Girls and Dragon Ball Z do a very bad job of handling sensitive subjects. For Gilmore Girls, it’s stalking, gas-lighting, and escaping bad relationships. For Dragon Ball Z, it’s sexual harassment. We talk about it a lot in the episode, so if either of those are especially sensitive for you, please be advised.
Normally we’d talk about things like the first appearance of Gotenks, or Zack and Mrs. Kim writing a “hit” song together so he could marry Lane. Those are both bonkers. Unfortunately the episode pulled a weird left turn by having Goku offer every woman he knows up to get groped by a stranger, and Gilmore Girls dipped its toe in bad relationship dynamics it wasn’t equipped to handle. So we talk about that a lot, while hoping the shows get back into their comfort zones next week.
Gohan and Rory Fund donor MST3James joined us to talk about the some of Goku and Gohan’s best bonding and some of Rory and Logan’s messiest drama. Meanwhile, Zack puts his hat in the ring for worst relationship choice on the show (stiff competition), Buu makes the world’s worst milk, and Leslie Odom Jr. stops by Gilmore Girls on his way to bigger and better things.
Paige and Grant are divided by Buu’s version of Elmo’s World. Paige has some questions about Goku’s time management, and Grant doesn’t know why this is Gilmore Girl’s most infamous episode.
Paris is out as Editor in Chief of the Yale Daily News and Grant is despondent that her character development is off chilling with Jaime Lannister’s growth. Meanwhile, Goku has 30 minutes to teach the boys fusion and decide who’s top of his “Best Friends to Say Goodbye To” list before he has to go back to Otherworld, and Christopher and Logan do some questionable bonding.
Gohan and Rory Fund donors and friends of the show, Alex and Ashley Hamilton, join us to talk about two fantastic fights: Goku vs. Buu and the Gilmore family free-for-all. We dive into the psychology of Buu, are amazed by Logan doing one (1) good thing, and miss a huge opportunity: Seriously, we had Alex Hamilton on the show, and Richard repeatedly threatens Yale’s bursar, but we don’t make a single Hamilton joke.
Goku comes up with the worst plan in Dragon Ball yet (which, is saying something), but Luke’s determined to try to beat it when he just, kinda hopes Lorelei won’t go to the diner, and Logan might have them all beat with his stalking strategy.
For once, there was more fighting in Gilmore Girls than Dragon Ball, and Goku had more emotional intelligence than any of the men of Gilmore Girls. We don’t know what’s happening either.
Zach reaches new lows, Paige gives up on a Dragon Ball plot before it even starts, and we’re still not sure Gilmore Girls knows the difference between a carnival and a Ren Fair.
After Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino teamed up with Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) and Broadway’s Sutton Foster to make a show about *checks notes* a man stalking a woman, taking advantage of her hitting rock bottom and lying to her to get her to marry him, his subsequent death and little girls learning ballet.
Logan is even worse than usual, the B-list Dragon Ball characters show promise but are under-utilized again, so we gave up and temporarily made this a Gravity Falls podcast. But hey, at least Jess is taking care of himself.
Paige and Grant can’t agree on if this episode undoes the impact of Vegeta’s sacrifice, they can’t make up their minds on if they loved or hated this episode of Gilmore Girls, and Paige gets on a Purity Culture soap box.
Lauren Graham as a military officer? North Korean spies getting taken down by a duck? Dancing Nazis? (Okay, that last one’s pretty normal for the Sound of Music.) Our brains got a little scrambled when we watched Vin Diesels’ The Pacifier.
Neysha from the But Why Tho podcast network joins us to talk about the rage and sacrifice of two proud alien papas, and incredibly expensive bags. Look, the common ground was lacking this week, but some legitimately cool character work happened on DBZ.
Grant can’t figure out what a good Gilmore Girls episode is anymore, but he does know vicious Emily is delicious, and we ask “Is Buu supposed to be Goku or Vegeta?”
Rory cannot make her own coffee or learn the maid’s name, but she can escape all of her problems via helicopter, another great Vegeta moment gets eclipsed by Evil Elmo, and we ask a very important question about Bulma’s wedding cake.
On this bonus episode, Grant and Paige watch The Return of Cooler (not to be confused with Cooler’s Revenge), where Vegeta displays a supernatural power for dramatic entrances, Paige gets exasperated by the Big Gete Star’s computing structure, and Oolong is here for some reason.
It’s always a joy to drop someone smack dab into the middle of late stage Gilmore Girls and Dragon Ball, and it was even more fun to get to do it with Paste Magazine Correspondent, Charitable Dungeon Master and Grant’s older brother, Ken Lowe.
The second episode of Ken’s livestreamed LotR D&D campaign will be going out May 3rd, to raise money for Livestream for the Arts.
Although Dragon Ball Z still hasn’t learned to show instead of tell, Vegeta finally gets the monologue he deserves. Meanwhile, Grant takes back everything nice he ever said about TJ.

It’s the end of Season 5, so we’re celebrating by discussing our favorite (and least favorite) moments and characters, and give an update for the Gohan and Rory Bookclub Fund.
Grant and Paige decide they really, really Chad Michael Miss Chad Michael Murray puns and pivot the entire show around them. It’s now called Chad Michael Mecha and it’s about One Tree Hill and Gundam Wing. Deal with it.
Grant doesn’t approve of Rory’s life choices, Paige isn’t mad at Vegeta, just disappointed (and maybe a little mad), and as we’re staring down the barrel of a very interesting season 6, we try to answer the question: Why did we decide to do this?

Lizzy Garcia, senior editor at But Why Tho and co-host of Why Am I Watching This, joins us to talk about mom jeans, embezzlement, and fuckbois. Seriously. We say fuckbois more in this episode than in any other episode combined.
Neysha, host of SO MANY THINGS and writer/Marketing & Strategic Communications for But Why Tho, joins us again just in time to watch her boy Vegeta destroy, see the worst museum Stars Hollow has to offer, and watch the Paris, Lane, Rory meetup that could have launched its own spinoff.
This week, Dragon Ball strips away all pretense and gives us 30 minutes of exposition (that we somehow don’t hate) and Videl continues to not live up to her potential. On Gilmore Girls, Richard doesn’t poop in the jello, but Logan AND Zach somehow make kissing worse.
Heads up: Since this episode does a terrible job portraying the realities and complications premarital abstinence, Paige and Grant spend some time discussing sex, including the fact that they’ve had it at least once.
Only Dragon Ball could screw up the pacing of a perfectly good tournament arc, only Amy Sherman Palidino could make a few minutes of Fiddler on the Roof feel like 3 and a half hours, and only Logan could screw up the simple joy of eating too much Chinese food.
Ash of Why Am I Watching This, Rogue Podron, and SW Skyhoppers joined us to talk about garbage men (i.e. Logan), not garbage men (i.e. Luke), and men who all look the same age in Anime (i.e. Goku and Gohan).

In Paige’s most painful bonus episode, we explore that beautiful disaster that is Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan (and we mean both “beautiful” and “disaster”).
Paige and Grant try to explain how, in Gilmore Girls and only in Gilmore Girls, crashing a woman’s car to make her get together with you doesn’t seem as absolutely toxic as should be. And on Dragon Ball, Piccolo is menaced by…pictures of the ocean?

Logan is back to his Frat Tristan ways when he hits on a child, then disrespects Rory’s education. Meanwhile, Vegeta is in Kill-Kakarot mode while he watches his son defeat Goten–breaking a few rules along the way.
Gilmore Ball Z indulges in its favorite tradition. Not Paige saying “Goku” when she means “Gohan,”* using our swaps to punch someone in the face, or even suggesting someone needs therapy. It’s Christmas time, and that means it’s time to enjoy survive another Traveling Pants movie with All Caps Kyrie.**
The girls are in college, which means it’s time to combine three YA novels into one 2 hour movie and still come out lacking.
Baby fights and fights near babies! Rory completely ignoring the mother daughter boundaries Lorelei never established, and a punk kid completely ignoring the rules of conduct the Jr. Martial Arts tournament definitely never established! Look, you love our pain, and we love the children. This was sorta inevitable. Goku’s white, Chi Chi has even less personality and they can’t even pronounce Gohan correctly. It might also be one of the worst pieces of garbage I’ve ever seen. And only kinda in the fun way? That’s right, it’s time for 2009’s Dragon Ball Evolution.

Paige accuses a beloved Dragon Ball character of blackmail, Grant delves into a deep depression over one Gilmore Girls couple, but Dean was mature for five seconds, so it’s still an improvement.
Kyrie joins us again to revel in Luke and Lorelei’s first date and defend the first appearance of her favorite Rory boyfriend: Logan. She’s much more successful in the first than the second. Also, Bulma joins the ranks of Bigfoot and the Mothman as one of GBZ’s favorite cryptids.
In a special Halloween, Grant and Paige watch 80s hitcult classic Buffy-predecessor The Lost Boys starring everyone’s favorite Gilmore Grandpa as Jack Bauer’s vampire dad. But was it a trick, or a treat?

We mark the halfway point of Gilmore Ball Z with some big introductions. Most importantly, George of Wait a Dune Minute delighted us. Luke’s sister Liz surprised us. Mr. Satan’s Pupils confused us.
Paige would also like to apologize on behalf of her brain for calling Pokemon’s James “Jesse” all episode. She will return her 90s kid card and grovel accordingly.
Dragon Ball Z goes back to basics, Gilmore Girls gives Grant’s been waiting for since the start of the show (he claims it’s Mrs. Kim’s character development. I’m pretty sure it was the chance to make a Power Rangers joke) and we discover some of the backstory for a Gilmore Girls guest appearance.

Sure, there’s also some really cool visual storytelling in Vegeta’s fight with Cell, Rory also has her first day at Yale, and Yale invents a verb in Lorelei’s honor, but let’s focus on the important part.

Sarah and Ken, the co-creators of the “Seeing Things” webcomic join us to talk about Paris burning, Cell’s…appendage, and the greatness of Bulma. Also, Grant’s nemesis returns.
In this week’s bonus episode, Grant brings us back to the early 00’s with his favorite teen primetime soap opera: The O.C., starring Gilmore Girls‘s Adam Brode. Paige isn’t sure what she just watched.
It’s investigation time for Bulma, Gohan and Trunks when they find a time machine that’s identical to Trunks’s, it’s also investigation time for Rory who just wants to know how Jess got a black eye. They’re both equally useless detectives, but hey, at least we got some A+ moments from Emily and an interesting mystery from Dragon Ball.
Grant finally gets some of that Gilmore Girls prequel he wanted when Sherry’s baby coming early reminds Lorelei of giving birth to Rory and we get some A+ Emily and Richard flashbacks. Meanwhile, both Piccolo and Kami make some good points.
In this week’s bonus episodes we watched the original DBZ episodes Freiza’s Counterattack and Goku’s Ordeal (better known as “Gohan’s Tutor” and “Piccolo and Goku Learn to Drive”). We also learned that Chi-Chi is under-appreciated, Gohan has a dragon(?), and Bulma’s mom might have something in common with her grandson’s worst enemy.
