027 The Exorcism of Emily Rose (Anneliese Michel)
Oct 16, 2019
Show notes
Was the Exorcism of Emily Rose (Anneliese Michel) Real?
Was the Exorcism of Emily Rose (Anneliese Michel) Real? In Ghostly’s twenty-seventh episode, Pat and Rebecca continue their exploration of exorcisms by taking a closer look at the real story behind the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The movie is based on the real life of Anneliese Michel and her claim of being possessed. Her death after receiving the rite of exorcism led to criminal charges for her parents and the priests involved. Was Anneliese (aka Emily Rose) really possessed by demons?
Who is Anneliese Michel? What is the history of her illness? What odd things happened to Anneliese? How similar is the movie to the real story? At what age was Anneliese when she started experiencing symptoms of possession? Was the treatment given by the medical establishment correct? What did the parents do to help their daughter and did the priests follow the rites of exorcism correctly? Did Anneliese see the Virgin Mary? Was her death a way to save those who have fallen off the path to righteousness or criminal negligence by her parents and priests?
Listener Mail

You could be on a future episode of Ghostly!
Listen to Pat give the history of the real story behind the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose. A young woman named Anneliese Michael experienced symptoms of what doctors said was epilepsy but what she and her parents came to believe was a possession by multiple demons. They found priests willing to perform exorcisms, 67 of them in all. When Anneliese died in 1976, the priests and the parents were charged with negligent homicide.
Rebecca adds to the story by going into the claim that Anneliese saw the Blessed Mary, who asked her to choose if she wanted to suffer and die to serve as a call to those who have fallen in their faith or to have the demons removed through an exorcism and she could live out her life. What did she choose? Also learn about the trial and whether the priests and parents were convicted of her death.
We are saving the debate for
Exorcisms until the final episode of the month, so there will not be a poll for
this episode yet. But keep talking and thinking if you believe in possession
and exorcisms. Was it right that her parents were charged? What about the priests?

Bob Anderson Oh, hey there! My name is Bob Anderson, and I host the paranormal show Bob After Dark. I became interested in the paranormal at a very young age. It all started with watching Unsolved Mysteries as a kid, and the rest was history. As I got older, my interests grew from just ghost stories. Cryptozoology, Lore, Extra Terrestrial, and even the Occult have all gained a fancy from me. Now, I’m on a quest to teach people the stuff their textbooks do not. Give them an idea of what is out there that can not be explained.
Anthony Di Fabio My name is Anthony Di Fabio, I was born and raised in beautiful Australia. As a child I spent most of my time immersed in nature, either on a beach watching and listening to the waves crashing onto the shore, to the stunning evenings where the moonlight and stars would seem to paint pictures across the water and sky, or in the wilderness reserves where I would feel an absolute powerhouse of energy. My explanation of these feelings of oneness and connection to the land would come many years later, as I found out about my Indigenous roots. I learnt at an early age that everything is connected in some form or another and we are all forms of energy constantly shifting to different vibrations. I’ve always been interested in the paranormal, encountering strange phenomena as a child and pre teen that I couldn’t explain. I dove into the occult studying as much as possible. Ancient ways of daily life and different religions/ practices from across the globe sparked my interest and I found the beauty in those that I encountered. There are so many things on this plane of existence that are not explainable by our own rational. Those are the things that drive me. Cheers! Anthony.

023 John Dillinger
Sep 04, 2019
Show notes
In Ghostly’s twenty-third episode,
Pat, Rebecca, and special guest Mondo explore the life and afterlife of John
Dillinger, one of the FBI’s first #1 Most Wanted criminals. Dillinger robbed
banks during the Great Depression while styling himself as a Robin Hood figure.
Not only did he escape capture many times, he also escaped jail when he was
captured. After he was finally trapped and killed by the Division of
Investigation (later known as the FBI) outside of the Biograph Theater in
Chicago, many claim to have seen his ghost. Does Dillinger’s spirit still haunt
this earth?
Who was John Dillinger? How did his life of crime start? Who
was in his gang? How did he become so good at robbing banks? What made him different
than other bank robbers? How did he escape capture so often? How did he escape
from jail? When was he finally killed? Who betrayed him to the FBI? Where do
people claim to see his ghost? What evidence is there that his ghost has been
seen? What do people claim to see of his spirit? Does Dillinger’s ghost linger
here?

evidence of John Dillinger’s ghost and how it haunts many places. Some say he
can be seen in the alley by the Biograph Theater (now called Victory Gardens
Theater) in Chicago. Others say they see his spirit in Crown Point, Indiana
where he escaped from jail, and then there are those that say he can be found
at the John Dillinger museum in Hammond, Indiana. Listen to Mondo’s and Pat’s response to these
claims as well as everyone’s rating of each piece of evidence.

022 Forever 27 Club
Aug 21, 2019
Show notes
In Ghostly’s twenty-second episode, Pat and Rebecca explore the curse of the 27 Club. Over the last century, many young artists have died at the age of 27 and legend says this is because they are cursed due to their immense talent and fast lifestyle. Or maybe even a deal with the devil. Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse are seven of the most famous members of this club, and in this episode Pat and Rebecca tell their stories of fame, drugs, alcohol, and untimely deaths. Did the devil come for his due?
WARNING: This episode contains topics that may be sensitive for some listeners.
What is the 27 Club? Who are the more famous members of the
27 Club? What happened to them that led to their deaths at the age of 27? Who
is Robert Johnson and what is the story of The Crossroads? How did Robert
Johnson influence the musicians that came after him? Are artists more likely to
die at 27? What is the curse? Were these deaths natural, suicides, accidents,
or the devil coming for his payment? Is the 27 Curse real or just a coincidence?
And do their ghosts still haunt this earth?
After the poll results, Pat and Rebecca embark on a
different pattern this episode. This is a big story and even while only seven
artists are explored, it takes both of them to deep dive into the history of
each and tell the story of how they might be curse. And how each has a ghost
story to tell.
Time for the debate! For each of the
seven artists, Pat and Rebecca debate if they were affected by the curse as
well as discussing if their ghost stories are true. Robert Johnson is often considered the first modern
member of the 27 Club. His life was tragic and so was his death. The story of
Robert Johnson is what gave birth to the curse, but it is the four deaths of
Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison that create the idea
of a 27 Club. Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse’s deaths have made sure that the story
of the curse remains fresh in our minds.
After debating each individual
story, Pat and Rebecca discuss and debate the curse as a whole. Listen to help
you decide your own vote.

Marie Laveau
Aug 07, 2019
Show notes
In Ghostly’s twenty-first episode, Pat and Rebecca explore Marie Laveau, the original Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. Born in 1801, she was known for her charity work and voodoo magic. Everyone in New Orleans knew who to go to for mojo bags and spells to fix their problems. But her legend didn’t die with her death in 1881. Ever since her death, Laveau has been seen all around New Orleans, at her home, at her tomb, and on the streets. Does Marie Laveau still haunt New Orleans?
Marie Laveau’s Tomb Photo by Patrick Harrington
Questions explored in this episode:
Who was Marie Laveau in life? How
did she practice voodoo? Why was she called the Voodoo Queen? What is voodoo
and how does it work? What charity work did Marie Laveau do? Who was Marie
Laveau II? Where is Marie Laveau buried? Does her spirit grant wishes to those
that mark her tomb? Does her spirit visit her grave in the form of a crow or a black
mass? What are the stories of those who have seen her? Does Marie Laveau haunt
New Orleans?
After the poll results, listen to Rebecca tell a ghost story
inspired by Marie Laveau’s spirit.
Then, listen to hear Pat give the history of voodoo and
Marie Laveau. He also reveals some of his own history with spellcraft and
voodoo.
Time for the debate! Rebecca shares
evidence of Marie Laveau’s spirit and how it haunts the city of New Orleans.
Some say she comes in the form of a crow. Others say she grants wishes to those
who mark her tomb with an X and follow the right rituals. Some report seeing
her figure around her tomb, her old home, or even the streets or stores around
town. Finally, there are stories of her spirit as a black mass hovering over
her home and grave. Listen to Pat’s response to these claims as well as Pat and
Rebecca’s rating of each piece of evidence.

020 Eastland Disaster
Jul 24, 2019
Show notes
In Ghostly’s twentieth episode, Pat and Rebecca explore the Eastland Disaster, the deadliest maritime disaster on the Great Lakes. On July 24th 1915, 844 people lost their lives when the Eastland capsized. This year is the 104th anniversary of this horrific event. Since the accident, visitors to the area of the disaster as well as those in places where the bodies were taken have reported noises and visions of faces and ghost figures. One of those places is Harpo studios, otherwise known as Oprah’s studios.
Pat and Rebecca are joined this episode
by ghost tour guide and historian Tony Szabelski to tell the history and explore
the ghost stories. Tony conducts weekly tours with Chicago Hauntings Tours and helps
people who want to ghost hunt get the chance with Hands On Paranormal.
What happened on the Eastland on
July 24th, 1915? Why were so many people on the ship? Why did it
capsize? Why did so many people die? What happened after the accident to the
bodies? What did eye witnesses say about what they saw? Where have people
claimed to see ghosts? What other paranormal activity has been reported? Are
there any places haunted by the spirits of those that died in this horrific
accident?
Listen to hear Pat and Rebecca talk with Tony about the
history and the ghost stories related to the Eastland Disaster. Tony reveals
which stories are definitely not related to the disaster despite often being
reported as part of it. After the interview, Pat and Rebecca offer up a few
more historical pieces of information as well as a few more haunting stories.
Be sure to stay tuned for Pat and Rebecca’s “Truth Meter” rating at the end. How true do they each think these stories are?

In Ghostly’s eighteenth episode, Pat and Rebecca explore the phenomenon known as Ouija boards. These modern talking boards have been sold in the game aisle of our favorite stores for years as a game for kids, but is it really a game? Can we really talk to spirits using a Ouija board? Listen and hear the history of this famous parlor game as well as Pat and Rebecca’s personal experiences with their own spirit boards.
Ouija Board
Questions explored in this episode: What is a Ouija board and how is it used? What are the rules for using a Ouija board? What is the history of the Ouija board? Is it a game? Can it contact spirits and/or demons? How long have people been using talking boards? When should people avoid using Ouija boards? Who is Zozo and why are people so scared of it?
Old Ouija Board Instructions
Listen to hear Pat give the history of the Ouija board,
explaining how it came to be and theories on how it got its name. He explores
the reasons people use the board and the early marketing of it. After the history, listen to Rebecca
tell the rules of using the Ouija board. These rules are as scary to hear as
the stories of people using board.
Homemade Ouija Board
Then listen to the Great Debate! Rebecca and her friend Cheryl tell the story of when they used the Ouija board as young teenagers and what happened when they did. Pat also tells his personal story of using the board and what happened in the aftermath. Both stories cause much debate. Then Rebecca tells more of the demon Zozo and Pat tries to sell us on the power of belief…and disbelief.
Be sure to stay for the whole episode to hear the “Closing Arguments” to help you make your choice before voting. And stay on afterwards for a very special bonus with two great young people debating their own ghost story.
Now is the time to vote on this episode! Vote on whether or not you think Ouija boards are real using the poll on our Facebook page. Just search for Ghostly Podcast on Facebook and be sure to Like us so you don’t miss anything!
