Experiments with Alcohol Apr 21, 2020
    Show notes

    The Challenge

Every year, starting the day after my birthday, I like to set a challenge for myself. This year I took a two month fast from alcohol.

I’m not a heavy drinker, but I am a regular drinker. It’s hard not to be when you play in a country band. Busch Light is often the only thing promoters provide for dinner, and country fans aren’t quite sure how to say “thank-you” if they can’t buy you a beer or shots.

As a personal trainer, Jiu Jitsu athlete and health-minded individual, I was curious to see what life without liquor would be like, so between January 10 and March 17, I didn’t drink a drop.

What I discovered came as a surprise, even for me.

    Results

    Weight

Starting Weight: 203 at 18% body fat. (166.5 pounds lean mass, 36.5 pounds fat.)

Ending Weight: 195 at 16% body fat. (164 pounds lean mass, 31 pounds fat.)

As expected, I lost weight, but it wasn’t all fat. While I lost 5.5 pounds of fat, I lost 2.5 pounds of lean mass. My estimate is that through the fast, I eliminated about 9000 empty calories over two months, and this is probably on the low side.

    Sleep

I’ve read that alcohol, even in small amounts, severely disrupts sleep, and it’s true. I slept better than I had in years after eliminating alcohol.

    Inflammation

There was no official scientific method that I followed for gauging inflammation, but about a month into my fast, I noticed I didn’t have my standard aches and pains. As a Jiu Jitsu practitioner who averages about ten hours of training per week, it’s rare not to have achy joints, but my joint pain almost completely disappeared during the second month of the fast. I literally felt better than I had in years.

    Cognitive

This improvement came as the biggest surprise to me. During my alcohol fast, I had two major mental revelations. The first was discovering a new way of thinking about music theory, a subject I’ve struggled with for over 30 years. The thought was so revolutionary to me that I wrote and published a book on it called Intuitive Theory.

The second, lesser revelation (but still major to me) was regarding the music video for a song I wrote more than two years ago. The song will likely be the next single I release, and I’ve debated ideas for its music video since the day I wrote it. During my fast, I finally developed a concept I know will make waves.

    Reintroducing Alcohol

As a skeptic, I couldn’t help but wonder if any of these improvements were due to the placebo effect, so on March 17, even though (and let’s be honest, partially BECAUSE) St. Patrick’s Day was cancelled due to Covid-19, I allowed alcohol back into my diet.

Once again, my drinking was in relatively small doses. I rarely allowed myself to drink more than two beers in a night.

Here’s what’s happened in the month since I began drinking again.

    Weight

My weight is right back up to 203 and 18% body fat. (At least I’m consistent.)

    Sleep

My sleep has been trash. On a night that I drink even one beer, it’s not uncommon for me to wake up at 3:30 or 4:30 in the morning and not be able to fall back asleep.

    Inflammation

I didn’t notice a difference right away, but the last week has been the achiest I’ve felt all year.

    Cognitive

This one is hard to gauge, but I was averaging about one major mental revelation per month without alcohol. I haven’t had a single one since I started drinking again.

    Moving Forward

All said and done, I’ve started another fast, this time for three months. I’m an all-or-nothing type of person. Saying I’m going to “drink less” won’t show any measurable results for me. I need hard and fast rules to stick to or I’ll backslide as soon as I’m tempted.

I don’t see myself giving up alcohol for good. I’ve got too many friends in the craft beer industry I need to support. That said, I can see these fasts becoming a regular occurrence in my life.

What I’ll Do Different This Time

My goal for the next two months is to lose fat mass and maintain, if not build my lean mass. To do this, I’ll need to replace the calories I lose from not drinking with calories from lean protein and healthy fats.

I’ll report back in in two months with my results.

    Tips for trying this yourself

Le Croix is a great substitute for beer. It certainly doesn’t taste as good but it fills the craving for something cold and bubbly. Best of all it’s cheap and it has no caffeine, calories, or artificial flavors.

Change the habits to lead to your drinking. I’m most tempted to drink when I’m sitting at home watching TV. If I’m not watching TV, I’m not tempted. If you can’t hang out with friends at the bar and not drink, find somewhere else to hang out with friends.

Create Barriers for yourself. It’s hard to drink when there’s no beer in the fridge or when you tell your friends to kick you in the nuts if they see you drink a single drop.

Have you given up alcohol and noticed differences? If so, share your experience in the comments below.

    100 Hour Challenge Apr 01, 2020
    Show notes

Technically, today is April Fool’s Day, but it feels as if the entire world has been punk’d over the last month, so I’m not here to play a prank. I’m here to issue a challenge.

I remember not too long ago when the biggest complaints I heard were “I wish I had more time,” or “I’m sooooo busy.” Fast forward to present day and most people outside the medical field are complaining of boredom. Yes, Tiger King took the edge off and memes are also helpful, but we’re quarantined until at least the end of April, if not longer, which means we’ve still got a long way to go.

For better or worse, we may never find ourself with an abundance of time like this again. Therefore, I submit the 100 hour challenge.

    100 Hour Challenge

    1. Find something you want to learn.

    2. Commit to practicing it for 100 hours.

    3. Practice EVERY DAY and log your hours.

    4. See how fast you can reach 100 hours of practice.

What does 100 hours of practice look like?

If you start today and practice 3 hours and 20 minutes a day, you could hit 100 hours of practice before May 1.

You could also practice 2 hours a day for 50 days or 1 hour a day for 100 days.

Not sure what you’re interested in learning?

Here are a couple places to look.

    Codecademy.com

Coding may be the most valuable skill you ever learn. Codecademy teaches it for free.

    Udemy.com

This website has hundreds of topics to choose from. I’ve taken courses on coding, web design, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, writing, singing, etc. Bonus tip: If the course seems too expensive, put it in your shopping cart and walk away. Udemy regularly emails coupons and puts their courses on sale. I’ve never paid more than $10 for a course.

    Freecodecamp.org

This website has hundreds of Ivy League courses for free.

    Your Local Library

Physical branches may or may not be closed, but libraries have tons of free resources online and through the Libby App. All you need is a library card.

Is this the ideal situation for us to be in? Far from it, but with a little initiative, we have the potential to turn it into a valuable one.

Don’t let the opportunity pass you by.

Feel free to share what you’ll be learning in the comments below.

    Books of 2019 Jan 03, 2020
    Show notes

It’s been a good year for reading. I managed to find a few books that were truly life-changing and I found one that’s a new favorite work of fiction. All links are affiliate links but most of the books I read I get from the library. Seriously, if you take nothing else away from this post, at least go out and get yourself a library card. Most Transformative Dark Horse – Todd Rose, Ogi Ogas This book clued me into the micro-motivations that drive me as an individual and it helped me realize the secret ingredient to the things I’ve stuck with and excelled at in life. If you’re feeling like a failure, this book is imperative. I consider it one of the top 3 most important books I’ve read in my life. Getting Things Done – Gary Allen The subheading of this book is the “The Art of Stress-Free Productivity” and it’s not lying. Most productivity methods take more effort than they’re worth. David Allen’s method of creating an “external mind” has freed up my brain in a way that’s hard to describe. Only time will tell, but I believe I’ll stick with this method of organization for the foreseeable future. Can’t Hurt Me – David Goggins This book has motivated me and almost every man I hang out with. If you find yourself lacking motivation or discipline, this book will mainline it to your system. Most Fun The Ocean at the End of the Lane – Neil Gaimen This is my favorite work of fiction in a long time and it’s a fairly short read. It’s a dark, modern fairy tale, and it’s just wonderful. Thank You for My Service – Mat Best Mat Best is pretty much the perfect man. Good looking, former special forces, former CIA contractor, freak athlete, funny, smart, successful, and he can even play the guitar. This book is a riot, but it’s not for the faint of heart. You’ll know within the first three pages if you can stomach it. If you can, hold on for the ride. 100 Deadly Skills – Clint Emerson This book is kinda like a Boy Scout Handbook for wannabe assassins. Learning how to dispose of bodies properly, how to make a taser out of a camera, and how to hide things up your butt are but a few of the skills you’ll learn in this book. Jack Reacher – Bad Luck and Trouble – Lee Child Jack Reacher is my spirit animal. I’m thankful there’s like 100 more of these books because it’ll be a sad day when I read the last one. Jack Reacher – Nothing to Lose – Lee Child Did I mention Malcolm Gladwell is a huge Jack Reacher fan? The publisher actually sends him the books before anyone else gets them. Great Perennial Seller – Ryan Holiday I celebrate anything Ryan Holiday writes. This book is one I plan to re-read in 2020 as I’m finishing up the first of several major writing projects I’ve been working on. Storyworthy – Mathew Dicks As a writer, I found this book invaluable. It’s targeted more for the speaking form of story telling, but the lessons apply to writing as well. If you want some inspiration to read this book, check out Matthew Dicks’ excellent interview on “The Art of Manliness” Podcast. I’ve listened to it 3 times. Also, check out some of his Award Winning Live story telling videos. We Learn Nothing – Tim Kreider This book is a collection of random essays on life. It’s beautifully written and extremely honest. I hope I can write as well as Tim Kreider some day. The Graveyard Book – Neil Gaimen I listened to the audio version of this book and I suggest you do the same. Neil Gaimen himself narrates and he has a voice like English butter. The story itself is just weird and wonderful. Monster Loyalty – Jackie Huba I read this one on a whim after Ryan Holiday suggested it in “Perennial Seller.” It dissects how Lady Gaga has grown from obscurity to super-star and how you can apply her principles to your own business. Even if you don’t like Gaga, this book is worth the read. It’s very very insightful. You’re Worth it – Kyle Carpenter If a Medal of Honer recipient writes a book, I want to read it. I can’t imagine going through what Kyle’s gone through and to maintain his level of positivity is impressive. If you’re feeling “woe is me” this book will help put things in perspective. Finish – Jon Acuff I’ve been familiar with Jon Acuff for a while but this is the first of his books I’ve read. It reads half like a stand-up comedy routine and half like a motivational coach helping to push you over the hump and finish that project you’ve been putting off. Good Choose Yourself – James Altucher I’ve had this on my shelf for several years and finally decided to read it. It’s a good book if you’re needing the motivation to strike out on your own. Trust Me I’m Lying – Ryan Holiday Another useful book by Ryan Holiday. The only reason it didn’t make my “great” list is because it’s a little dated. That’s my fault, not his. I should have read it years ago. Nonetheless, there are some major insights into media in this book. It’s difficult to watch or read the news now after this book showed me just how ridiculous it all is. The Trident – Jason Redman I love books by veterans, especially books by Navy SEALs. This one is worth the read. Jason Redman is brutally honest about how his failings almost got him kicked out of the SEALs. His road to redemption, subsequent life threatening combat injuries and recovery demonstrate how a person can make a complete 180 in their life. The Richest Man in Babylon – George S Clason This is an old timey book of financial wisdom. I debated putting it in the “great” category, but I’m not gonna lie, the King James writing style makes it difficult to read. If you can muscle your way through it, you’ll be blessed with some great personal-finance gems. I Never Met a Story I didn’t Like – Todd Snyder I really enjoyed this book, but it was also infuriating. I’ve struggled more than half my life for one shot at “making it” in the music industry. Todd Snyder was handed opportunity after opportunity and pissed them all away, yet he still “made it.” I guess it goes to show, some talent is just too good to keep down. Good Omens – Neil Gaimen, Terry Pratchett This book has been on my shelf for more than ten years, but after listening to Neil’s podcast with Tim Ferriss, and in anticipation of the Amazon Prime TV series based on the book, I decided to finally read it. I may have built this one up in my head too much. It was good, but not quite what I expected. My fault, not Neil or Terry’s. This is Marketing – Seth Godin I’m a huge Seth Godin fan so I was excited to read this book. For me, the only reason it didn’t fall into the “great” category is I’d already gleaned most of its content from Seth’s awesome podcast “Akimbo.” That said, I did take pages of notes. Really good information, but a lot of it was review for me. Gridiron Genius – Michael Lombardi I picked up this book after hearing the author speak on “The Art of Manliness” Podcast (my number one current resource for finding books to read). I honestly don’t care all that much about football, but I am a strategy nut, and football has it in spades. I will warn you, you may actually respect the New England Patriots after reading this book. Contagious – Jonah Burger I may have heard about this book through “Perennial Seller” as well, but I can’t remember for sure. If you create content, it’s an important read. Meh Own the Day, Own Your Life – Aubrey Marcus This book could be useful for someone who doesn’t know anything about fitness and nutrition, and I did try a few of his ideas, but overall I didn’t get much out of it. Be The Man – Garritt J White I know this book has helped some people, but I didn’t really take anything useful away from it.
