Episode 43: Tween to Teen; Owning Their Faith Jul 21, 2021
    Show notes

We bring our little kids to Jesus but we want our big kids to start coming to Jesus on their own. They have to own it! It needs to be personal for them but how do we do that? Listen in as we share our own faith journeys, why church camp made such an impact and how we want our kids to follow in Peter’s footsteps of walking out to Jesus and then completely flinging themselves toward him with reckless abandon.

This episode is part of our summer teaching series: The Tween to Teen Transition. You can catch all of the other lessons on Gather Moms Patreon.

Episode 42: HOME; Where are my Keds? Jun 14, 2021
    Show notes

High-five, MAMA, because we have made it to the last episode of Season Three: HOME! We are finishing this season with a peek in the room of our tween kids. Tweens are ages 9 to 12 and it’s that in-between phase of childhood to teenager. So much happens in their development and bless all the changes…body changes, school changes, and emotions on hyper-drive. Kate and Rebecca share their memories of tween clothing, hair styles and song choices. Oh how the times have changed, but still an important growing period as our tweens desire privacy, independence and would rather ask friends for advice than Mom. Their bodies are in major flux and it is so hard to navigate the eye-rolls, attitude and changing bodies. This is a hard phase, MAMA, and our goal is to help our kids remember who they are in Christ Jesus so they can tackle their struggles well WITH our love and support.

    Mentions:

    • Poodle bangs, double-layer socks, Keds, scrunchies, Lisa Frank and glitter pens, hyper-color, Trolls and so many iconic shows, movies and songs. Enjoy your own walk down memory lane from your tween years!
    • Tips for how to journey well with our Tweens:
      • Start allowing more privacy – knocking on the door before entering
      • Tech-wise – be ‘in the know’ of what your tween is watching and how much time they are on it
      • Friendship drama – helping set boundaries so they are not connected 24 hours a day
      • Be flexible with their changing interests
      • Slow down at bedtime for a daily check-in

    Back to the Bible:

    • Romans 8:37
    • 1 Timothy 4:12
    • James 1:5
    • Philippians 4:6-7

Episode 41: HOME; What’s Hiding Under the Bed? Jun 07, 2021
    Show notes

Snack wrappers, moldy cereal bowls, lonely socks…these are all things you find under the bed of a teenager. We just upgraded my son’s bed and I found so many treasures hiding behind that piece of furniture. The transition into the teenage room is essential to their new responsibilities and lifestyle. Give them ownership of their stuff and the capacity to keep it clean. Today Rebecca shares some helpful tips to creating a feel-good, work-hard space for your teenagers. Not only are we upgrading furniture, but we’re casting vision for their future. We have the opportunity to speak truth over our mini-adults and remind them of their gifts and potential. Let’s spur them on to a life of learning and resilience.

    Mentions:

    • Mathetes is the Greek word for disciple. A disciple is a learner.
    • Spur means to encourage someone to do or achieve something.
    • Sear means to burn, mark or injure.

    Episode 39: HOME; I’ve got issues…with food May 24, 2021
    Show notes

We’re back in the kitchen and cooking up a great episode all about food. It’s essential to living but can also cause anxiety and struggle. Kate is sharing her truth about growing up with mixed messages about food and her body. We know this can be a sensitive topic for some of you so thank you for listening and processing with us!

The kitchen and food are so central to our HOME and families. So much of our life revolves around it. As mamas, we need a healthy relationship with food so we can model that to our kids. Naturally we compare our body to others. As parents we sometimes compare our kids’ bodies to other kids. It’s sad that we often find our standard for beautiful from the world instead of our Creator. These mixed messages for good and bad foods, beautiful bodies and acceptable weight is doing harm to us and impressionable young minds. Let’s speak kingdom culture over our kids and point them to God’s standard.

All things God created are good. We, as humans, have labeled food and weight by our limited perspectives and now we are influencing others to join our club. God’s word reminds us to not allow anything to master us. If food has mastery over me, then I need to ask my Creator for help to find freedom. God created the world and our bodies with order. When our physical fuel tank is low, then we need to refuel. Let’s ask Him to teach us what is best for our bodies!

    Back to the Bible:

    • 1 Timothy 4:1-4
    • Romans 14:20
    • 1 Corinthians 10:23
    • 1 Corinthians 10:31
    • 1 Corinthians 6:12

Episode 38: HOME; My Way or the Highway May 17, 2021
    Show notes

What would you say is the hardest working appliance in your home? Hint: It resides in the kitchen. That’s right, the dishwasher! I run my dishwasher at least once a day. All the people…all the dirty dishes…all the days of my life. My dishwasher is an analogy for my parenting because I have an unwavering belief that there is one right way to load the dishes. In mom-speak, “My way or the highway.” Today our kitchen-chat is all about leaving room for our kids to make mistakes as we train them both in chores and life. Sometimes we assume that our way of doing things must be the only way. We expect perfection from our small people that we ourselves are not capable of meeting. Deep breaths for letting go and giving our kids room to try, try again. We want our kids to work hard and do things with excellence but perfection should not be the ultimate goal. The dishwasher reminds us to wash away our perfect expectations just like that spraying water washes away the leftover food.

    Mentions:

    • Bosch dishwasher deep dive found here
    • Idiom = figurative language (ex. my way or the highway, raining cats and dogs)
    • Good starting chores: taking out the trash and unloading the dishwasher

Episode 37: HOME; What’s in your Closet? May 10, 2021
    Show notes

Gather wouldn’t be here without our sweet friend, Jenny Worsham! She is the visionary behind our Gather groups, the Queen of hospitality and one of the best storytellers you’ll ever meet. She joined the ranks of homeschool mom this past year with her elementary aged kids and is now a zoom expert. Her house is just like yours with a touch of chaos, kid catastrophes and deceased pet fish. She is always up for a theme day and throws the best parties. Today she joins us in the studio to tell us all about her Prayer Closet. Closets hold priceless square footage in our homes because we can never have enough of them. Jenny chose to clean out her under-the-stairs closet to create a special place to spend time with God in prayer. She also brings her kiddos into the closet to pray together and model by example this spiritual discipline.

    Mentions:

    • War Room is a movie made popular in 2015 and follows Elizabeth Jordan played by Priscilla Shirer as she discovers the power of prayer through her mentor, Miss Clara. She cleans out her master bedroom closet to create a prayer room where her time in prayer literally changes her life and family.

    • Keep a basket of journals and pens to write our your prayers to God
    • A comfy chair or blanket adds a cozy touch
    • Be intentional and pick a quiet moment to get away and ask God to help you spend time in prayer
    • You can create a prayer place anywhere in your home: a comer of your bedroom, a spot at the kitchen table or an early morning on the back porch. Use whatever you have.

Episode 36: HOME; Not Home Alone May 03, 2021
    Show notes

Moms share some common needs like sleep, caffeine and solo shopping trips. Guess what else we share? 90% of moms endure the common struggle of loneliness. It’s hard to imagine a mom would ever be lonely in a house full of people, but often we feel isolated amidst the chaos of motherhood. We need each other! We need mom-friends to walk alongside us and share our burdens, offer encouragement and remind us we are normal. Social media would lead us to believe that great moms have it all together, along with a tribe of perfect friends. Wrong! All of us have sin struggles and emotional breakdowns. Great mom-friends get vulnerable with each other and share their imperfections. Stop prioritizing ‘doing’ over ‘being’ because a checked off list of to-do’s won’t offer the same support as a kind smile and warm embrace. Show up for those around you and be intentional with building your tribe of like-minded MAMAS.

    Mentions:

    • Check out our BONUS Episode: The Day We Met which dropped August 28, 2020 to hear about the start of our friendship.
    • Character clothing is just part of growing up. Give in because we promise it won’t last forever!
    • You know you’ve found a true mom friend when you can answer the door braless.

    Back to the Bible:

    • Hebrews 10:24-25
      • Get creative with how you encourage other mom-friends
      • Build each other up with courage, support and confidence
      • Don’t isolate in your home away from community
      • Meet together and pursue hope and healing

Give a MOM the gift of community by joining our Gather Moms Patreon – for $5, $10 or $20 a month you can support Gather Moms as we produce resources that support and podcast episodes that encourage. We want moms to know they are not alone! Thank you for considering supporting us financially.
