sad alex Interview Aug 30, 2022
    Show notes

We'd be lying if we didn't say that Tik Tok has been a huge source of my entertainment since the start of the pandemic. There are a ton of truly funny, weird, and inventive people using the platform to express themselves. A lot of musicians have been using the platform but none as well as sad alex. Recently, Alex has been running a campaign recently through a series of Tik Toks leading up to the release of her new single "rugburn". Each video features a portion of the song and her singing it somewhere different. Dan and Alex sat down to have a in depth conversation which you're about to hear.

Alex Saad and Dan discuss her use of Tik Tok and social media for sad alex to promote her music through the pandemic. But they also delve into the dangers of social media and get a bit into the ideas of parasocial relationships.

Alex has written music for many other artists but we chat about creating her art and the amount of authenticity that goes into creating art for the sad alex project. When you put something of yourself on the page, you have to give a level of the truth to the audience which Alex excels at. Her music is a look into who she is and that's what she wants. Her intention is to be her authentic self when creating art.

The two discuss their approach to the creation of content but also get into the idea of faking it till you make it. They talk about how trying to approach things differently is where they have found their success. Before the interview, Dan ran a question past Alex that she was shocked he knew. It was a big moment like he was Nardwaur interviewing someone.

Alex talks about blending sexuality, intimacy, and humor for her connects in her music.

Alex is also from the East Coast so she and Dan talk about the difference in sandwiches between their area versus Los Angelos.

"rugburn" is out now and be sure to stream her other music.

    J H Williams III Echolands Interview Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode, J.H. Williams III (Sandman Overture, Promethea, Batwoman, Batman, Desolation Jones, Blondie, The Sword) returns to the show after the release of the first volume of his series Echolands from Image Comics. Our first conversation happened after Issue 1 which only gave us a brief glimpse into the world he co-created with W. Haden Blackman (Star Wars, Elektra). The team is once again joined by the legendary Dave Stewart on colors and the GOAT Todd Klein.

In a bizarre future world that has forgotten its history, a reckless thief, Hope Redhood, holds the key to excavating its dark, strange past—if only she and her crew can escape a tyrannical wizard and his unstoppable daughter. But fate will send them all on a path leading to a war between worlds. Echolands is a landscape format, mythic-fiction epic where anything is possible—a fast-paced genre mashup adventure that combines everything from horror movie vampires to classic mobsters and cyborg elves, to Roman demigods and retro rocket ships. It's full of things you know spun in an entirely new way.

With this interview Dan and J.H. were able to really dive deeper into the world and its inspirations. The discussed quotes as a form of inspiration to them as creators. Williams got a bit in depth on each of the different parts of the world of Echolands including Horror Hill which Dan was eager to learn much more about. Dan talks about their discussion of Cor in the first episode and why the character is important for him and others. Both of their minds spent some time in the gutters... no not those gutters weirdos... the gutters of the page itself to discuss how it can effect the art and story on page physically. They also once again talk about music and specifically Lizzo.

Echolands Vol 1 is out now wherever comics are sold in a hardcover format. This is the series you want to read physically to truly absorb all of the feeling of holding the abnormal formatting. Read our review here!

On the third episode of this Anime August, Scarlett, Gunner, and Ashley have a thoughtful conversation about the smash hit anime film, Your Name, as Jake twiddles his thumbs thinking up his next joke. Which is the same thing he did while writing this episode description!

Mitsuha is just a small town girl that gets on a train going anywhere. Taki is just a city boy that wakes up in Mitsuha's body. And she wakes up in his. The pair share their bodies with one another and communicate through notes on their phones but one day that all stops. Years later Taki goes to her small town to meet her only to learn that it was struck by a meteor. Upon learning this his memory begins to unravel as he fights to remember only to recognize a place Mitsuha's grandmother brought him to and he falls and is transported back into her body the day she died. Taki along with Mitsuha's friends go out of their way to evacuate the town to save everyone despite the mayor, Mitsuha's father. Right before the crash Taki returns to his body only for Mitsuha to return and the adult Taki meets the young Mitsuha at dawn between the worlds and time only to begin forgetting one another and try to remember. Back in the present an adult Taki runs into an adult Mitsuha, each asking one question of the other, whats your name?

The red string of fate leads the pair from "Small Town Girl" by Journey into a Freaky Friday situation that is only destroyed by the plot if a disaster film only to be saved with a Groundhog's Day situation. The film relies on the fact that its two characters are partially on a delay between when the other takes over their body. Its a sweet film thats excellently written and directed.

Harley Quinn Interview with Patrick Schumacker Jul 28, 2022
    Show notes

With Harley Quinn season 3 dropping its first three episodes on HBO Max today, we had the chance to chat with co-creator, executive producer, and writer of the show Patrick Schumacker about the series. Patrick's other work include Abbot Elementary, Powerless, Surviving Jack, and the upcoming Harley Quinn spin off Noonan's. Be sure to check out this Harley Quinn interview before watching the new season.

Harley Quinn is the first time we've gotten to see Harley and Ivy on screen as a couple which has made fans extremely happy. Patrick talks about the impact of being able to treat queer stories as they are as normal everyday things. Patrick talks about the reactions to this and the positive reactions the fans have had. But he also gets into what it was like before it was confirmed and how the fans treated the show and the team.

The Harley Quinn show has given it's unique take on many well known characters in the DC Universe. Patrick talks about the ones he is most proud of but more so the one that he wasn't expecting to have as much staying power as they did. With television being a collaborative process, Patrick talks about how the writers (and Dan) want to keep one character the way he has been in the show.

Season 3 brings in some familiar fan favorite characters from the DC Universe. The season has some more focus on the bat family with Nightwing finally making his appearance. We chat about the character and his interactions with the best Robin Damian Wayne. Patrick and Dan also talk about the vibes that the show's Swamp Thing gives off and his role in the show at large.

    The Sandman Jul 27, 2022
    Show notes

We hope you brought your thickest black mascara, your fishnets, and your leather black trench coat because the GateCrashers are getting all kinds of Goth as we cover The Sandman! It's their first time reading it and the first time Neil Gaiman has been covered on GateCrashers!

Jake and Dan both read The Sandman from DC Comics for the first time ever. It's the first episode in nearly 2 years where neither of these hosts has had read the title before preparing for the episode. Spoiler for the episode but they both love The Sandman. Maybe not as much as Wesley Dodds but Dream is getting pretty high on the cool character scale with his goofy little guy posing in his debut series. The series helped kick off DC's iconic Vertigo imprint that features other titles like Swamp Thing and more.

With the new Netflix series on the horizon, we decided it was finally time to crash the gates of The Sandman's dream kingdom to see if the comic is one you should check out. It's a great series but you should be prepared for some unsettling topics that may not be for all readers.

As always, the first half of the episode is dedicated to telling you a little bit about the series to see if it's for you! We get into the themes explored in the first book of The Sandman. Dan goes on a rant about how good the covers of the series are and how they're iconic.

The series first 8 issues are currently available on DC Universe as well as in physical form at most comic book shops and book stores. With the upcoming release of the show, The Sandman should be easy to find where you get your comics! If you don't have a shop, check out Third Eye Comics who is always there to help you find this and many other titles.

The boys always may or may not get into a fight in today's cold open... honest mistake. Dreamy, wake up... I don't like this.

The Sandman's creative team includes iconic names like Neil Gaiman, Karen Berger, Todd Klein and more!

    What's covered in the episode:

    The Sandman Book One

    Writer: Neil Gaiman

Artists: Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Malcolm Jones iii, Chris Bachalo, Michael Zulli, Kelley Jones, Charles Vess, Colleen Doran

Colorist: Daniel Vozzo, Zylonol, Steve Oliff Letterer: Todd Klein, John Costanza

    Cover art by Bree King

Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, and Steve Hepburn Talk Minor Threats Jul 26, 2022
    Show notes

Do you love D-list super villains and crooks who are more so looking to make ends meat rather than take over the world all the time? We've got the perfect book for you then, Minor Threats! The book is co-written by Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt, the duo who brought us MODOK on Hulu and MODOK: Head Games from Marvel Comics. They are rejoined on art by Steve Hepburn who did the art for Head Games.

The trio joins us today to talk about their fully original new Dark Horse super hero universe. We get into which d-list villains that we have always loved and what makes croooks like these more relatable characters than the big bad A-listers. Patton Oswalt gets into the idea of criminals having a code and what that means. Scott talks about the freedom of getting to design a new world that has been lived in by superheroes for so long and what makes for a good hero or villain costume.

It's hard out there for a supervillain. Not the world conquerors, chaos engines, or arch-nemeses . . . but the little guys. The ones who put on uniforms, knock over jewelry stores, and get tied to poles. And things are about to get worse. The psychotic Stickman has murdered Kid Dusk, sidekick to Twilight Citys premier crime-fighter, the Insomniac. The Insomniac's teammates are tearing Twilight apart, turning it into a police state--desperate to capture Stickman and stop the Insomniac from crossing that final line in which he may never come back from. Caught in the middle are the small-time c-list villains, finding it impossible to walk down the street without being harassed by these heroes. With a bounty on the Stickman's head, former villain Playtime decides to assemble a ragtag team of villains to take down the Stickman and kill him themselves.
