Garrett Titlebaum: It's Nice To See He's Working RSS

Fresh off her stint as the January comic in residence at Burning Bridges Comedy Club, Helen Wildy will be at the UC Warehouse with the monthly show Unplanned Comedy’s Stand Up Stand Ups, this Saturday.

She joins the podcast to discuss what she learned when we met at Arcade house team auditions, we then talk about her one woman show she put on for Pittsburgh’s First Night. Helen and I shared are affinity for the Gilmore Girls. We get lost in a Stars Hallow discussion. We talk about being Irish. Then have a great talk about navigating open mics.

I’ve been lucky to have four, five or six different shows with Helen over the last couple months and she’s quickly becoming one of my favorite people to work and hang in the green room with.

Enjoy the final episode of January.

Today on the show I have a great conversation with Justin Zell co-owner of the STEEL CITY IMPROV THEATER. We discuss the beginnings of the theater he manages with his wife, Kasey Daley and this weekend’s upcoming 9th Anniversary Show. As the landscape of Pittsburgh comedy has shifted and grown so much in the last decade it was nice to catch up with my first improv teacher and find more about his time in New York with People’s Improv Theater and how Gary Vaynerchuk and John Taffer have been able to influence him from outside of the comedy scene.

Great to connect with one of my first improv classmates, friend and Bear Plane teammate, Chris Kreiser. We hash out the always controversial topic of Top 10 Workout Songs, as well as the importance of the much needed skill of listening, and the similarities between jazz and improv. Good convo with a great person.

It was great to catch up with Gregory during a short visit back in Pittsburgh headlining at the Brillobox. I was lucky to get him in the studio just before he headed to the gig.

Gregory is a NYC-based comic, writer, and producer that I got to know in 2017 while he was staying a few months in Pittsburgh catching up with family. You may be familiar with him from his regular appearances on SiriusXM radio or maybe his set at my old showcase The Home Club . The show I co-hosted with a talking sandwich named Lunchmeat Grumblekraut.

I’m starting off 2019 with one of my first friends in comedy, Alex Homyak. As Alex finishes up his residency at the Burning Bridges Comedy Club, we sit down for our first one on one chat on the mic. He tells of how he’s finding new ways to hone his comedic voice, engage with audiences, and entertain with an unbridled infectious personality. We were lucky enough to catch up with him while he was in full vacation mode. We talk character roasts, his parent’s thoughts on his bits about them, the State College experience, and the focus on being more present and reliable.

Check out Alex’s stuff Friday, 01/11/19, at CLUB CAFE as he opens for Stavros Halkias

Merry Christmas Beautiful Baumshells! Hope you enjoy this episode with a warm cup of cocoa on on your way to the in-laws for Christmas dinner. Great to reconnect with Krish after a whirlwind year that included a 4 month tour with his fiance and then wedding in October, just ahead of his 30th birthday.

Krish and I discuss the audience response to his newest hour Empathy On Sale and how The Mohan Mafia Maryland Chapter has been able to protect and support him. We discuss faith, Universal Basic Income, and how learning patience might be the key to improving all relationships.

Thanks for all of your support during 2018. I’m looking forward to the chance to have more great conversations in 2019 to share with all of you. Be safe this holiday season and be good to each other.

Senneca Stone & John Dick Winters

Garrett Titlebaum: It's Nice To See He's Working RSS

First, I’d like to say one thing about this episode, I found I know very little about The Misfits.

Senneca Stone & John Dick Winters, two old friends of the podcast return ahead of their respective comedy anniversaries.

Senneca Stone joined the podcast almost two years ago to the date, and I’m happy he’s back. Now 3 years into his stand-up career, he is heading into his first featured spot, tomorrow, at Helium Comedy Club in Buffalo. Helium is a space where Senneca had the chance to host a handful of weekend shows, including this past weekend with Nate Bargatze.

John Dick Winters joins the very elite 3 timers club on the podcast. Upon the eve of his 7th anniversary as a joke teller, we discuss how the first three months are going at the Burning Bridges Comedy Club, the club he and Derek Minto recently started at Hambone’s Restaurant.

Also JDW is in the midst of submission season for his festival with the same name as his club, we discuss the finer points of getting a good tape together, we talk strategy on working out a longer set on tour, and go over some of the different trends he has seen as a booker and promoter which lead him to opening Burning Bridges Comedy Club.

Lots of great moments come up with these two when they talk of their different comedy journeys. They both offer a ton of insight on many different topics surrounding comedy today in its current state.

Burning Bridges Comedy Club is Pittsburgh’s only independent stand up club with shows every Saturday at 8:00 PM and 10:30 PM, Sundays at 9:00 PM, as well as open mics Monday and Thursday, both at 9:00 PM
