    333. Carla "26, Married, Medical Student & Working as a Barista" Aug 14, 2026
    Show notes

She's 26, freshly married, living in the Midwest, and working as a barista to make ends meet — while simultaneously training to become a doctor.

Meet Carla. She's a medical student pursuing family medicine and psychiatry, navigating one of the most financially demanding seasons of life: medical school, a brand new marriage, and a future that's full of potential but tight on cash right now.

In this episode of Future Rich, CFP® Barbara Ginty sits down with Carla to untangle her financial picture and build a real plan, one that works on a barista's income, medical school grants, and a whole lot of determination.

The good news? Carla's situation is more manageable than it might seem. She's already saving $200K in tuition through her program, has $16,500 in grants, and has a partner working and going to school simultaneously. Barb helps her see the full picture and what to do with it.

In this episode, Barb and Carla discuss:

    • How to manage $39K in student loans while still in school
    • What saving and investing looks like on a $12K barista salary + medical school grants
    • Why Carla's tuition-free program is a bigger financial win than she realizes
    • Retirement planning strategies for future doctors, when to start and how
    • How Carla and her husband can build a financial foundation together
    • Family planning considerations during medical training: what to think about financially before having kids.
    • The financial reality of pursuing family medicine and psychiatry and what income looks like on the other side.

If you'd like to be a guest on the podcast, we are looking specifically for women who want to discuss their personal finances and have questions about retirement planning, Social Security, and more.
