Chris Bennett - The Soaring Academy of Southern California Aug 22, 2019
    Show notes

Meet Chris Bennett, who along with his wife Julie, runs the Southern California Soaring Academy and Glider School. This incredible facility is located near wide-open expanses and at the foot of mountains, making it highly sought after for flying enthusiasts and glider specialists. The Soaring Academy is a non-profit organization that offers glider rides and lessons for certification, as well as a full airstrip for those who own and operate their own gliders. On top of all that, they have found amazing ways to give back, working closely with students, especially 8th graders at the iLead Schools in California, adding to their studies about aerodynamics and flying mechanics. Also, The Soaring Academy works with various wounded veterans organizations to give men and women who have served and suffered the opportunity to soar among the clouds and aide in the journey to recovery. Hear Chris's inspiring story on episode 140 and stick around to the end (of the full video podcast on YouTube) for a first-person look at flying in a glider taking off from The Soaring Academy.

To visit the facility and also to donate to their organization, go to www.soaringacademy.org

SCIENCE: A Norse hall discovered in Scotland Aug 18, 2019
    Show notes

On the science episode this week, I first unpack the recent discovery of an ancient Norse drinking hall in Northern Scotland. A team of researchers from the Archaeology Institute at the University of the Highlands and Islands has unearthed the remains of a large Norse building at the site of Skaill farmstead in Westness, Rousay. This incredible find has also shown other settlements on top of the hall, helping researches to piece together a better picture of life in the area throughout the years. Then I look at the award-winning interactive site from NASA, Home, and City, that details all the scientific advancements made from space exploration that impact everyday items in your home and your city.

Dr. Stephen Humphreys - American Veterans Archeological Recovery Aug 15, 2019
    Show notes

Archaeologist and veteran of the US Air Force Dr. Stephen Humpreys joins episode 139 of the podcast this week. Dr. Humphreys talks about what led him down the path to archaeology while in the service and how it helped him formulate the plan that would eventually become the American Veterans Archaeological Recovery program. Dr. Humphreys and his team invited me along with members of Death Wish Coffee to their recent archaeological dig of the Saratoga Battlefield and discusses just what they found and their hopes of returning.

AVAR or the American Veterans Archaeological Recovery program is dedicated to bringing a unique approach to discovering the past while helping people in the present with what they call "rehabilitation archaeology". Archeological digs have a specific mission, objectives, strategy and tools that are deployed and allow veterans to easily acclimate to the parameters. Plus, AVAR is dedicated to helping veterans pursue archeology as far as they would like, not just on a single dig site, but even as a budding career if they so choose.

You can learn more about how amazing AVAR is and the archeology they are a part of at www.americanveteransarchaeology.org and you can also donate to the non-profit organization at https://americanveteransarchaeology.org/donate/

SCIENCE: The Artemis Generation Aug 11, 2019
    Show notes

The most exciting news about space exploration is that we are focused on going back to the moon in a big way, with our sights on Mars. The Artemis program will be multiple missions from NASA, culminating in bringing the first woman and the next man back to the surface of the moon. Plus, NASA will be creating Gateway, an orbiting space station around the moon that will ferry astronauts to and from the lunar surface.

We are the Artemis Generation. Just like with Apollo, this will instill wonder and excitement back into the American space program as humanity has its sights set on becoming a true interplanetary society.

Chris Pryonski - Titmouse Inc. Aug 08, 2019
    Show notes

Chris Prynoski never dreamed he would run his own animation studio until he started to do just that with Titmouse Inc. Chris joins episode 138 of the podcast to talk about starting out in animation in the early nineties at MTV, working on many titles in the Liquid Television era. Chris also worked on Beavis and Butthead Do America, helping to plot out the famous hallucination sequence in the movie.

But then Chris just wanted to start his own T-shirt company on the side of his animation career, and Titmouse was born. Chris quickly learned he could actually start his own animation studio, and Titmouse has become a giant player in cartoons today, producing fan favorites on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Netflix including Metalocoplyse, The Venture Brothers, and Big Mouth.

Titmouse Inc is also integral in one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in history for Critical Role - The Legend of Vox Machina, a new animated series based in the realm of Dungeons and Dragons.

    SCIENCE: 500-year-old sunken ship Aug 04, 2019
    Show notes

On this week's science episode, first, we head to the bottom of the Baltic Sea. An incredible 500-year-old ship has been preserved and remains almost intact, a surprising find for a wooden ship from that long ago. With the smaller boat and deck guns still visible in the submarine videos, it's both haunting and beautiful to behold. The team that is investigating this find will be pulling more data and hopefully be able to shed light on this tumultuous time in history in that region. Then, let's head up to the stars to celebrate the one year anniversary of the TESS mission. NASA launched TESS, the Transiting Exoplanets Survey Satellite has discovered 24 exoplanets already with hundreds more that need to be verified.

Death Wish Coffee goes back to space Jul 25, 2019
    Show notes

Death Wish Coffee is going back to space! In 2018, we sent our coffee to the International Space Station to help fuel the astronauts as they perform various science experiments in space. Now, thanks to iLEAD schools and DreamUp, our coffee is part of an experiment created by students at iLEAD schools that will be sent up to the space station for the astronauts to work on.

The basic idea of the experiment is to test if coffee can help kill bacteria in your mouth in microgravity. We went out to the schools in California to talk with the facilitators, administrators, and the students involved in the experiment.

Hear from iLEAD school founders Amber Raskin and Dawn Evenson, Kathleen Fredette the Director of STEM initiatives, former CEO of DreamUp Carie Lemack, learners Presley Radford, Kallie Verkouteren, Skyler Verkouteren, Emily Barragan, Luke Rigdon, Finton Harwood, Connor Raskin, Isobel Salters, Braden Hall and more.

Death Wish Coffee is proud to help fuel the next generation of science and space exploration, and to partner with incredible organizations like iLead schools and DreamUp.

This story isn't over, as the experiment will be sent to the International Space Station and then return to Earth after the astronauts work on it, and then the iLEAD school learners will compare the results.

    SCIENCE: Apollo 11 - The 50th anniversary Jul 21, 2019
    Show notes

On this week's science segment, I go down the road to the historic Apollo 11 mission that put the first people on the moon and returned them to Earth. Starting in 1957 when the Soviet Union put Sputnik, the first satellite, into space, the race was on to make it to the moon. There were triumphs and tragedies on both sides, and it seemed like the Soviet Union was always one step ahead. But the United States made the 'giant leap for mankind' with the success of the Apollo missions and the culmination of all the hard work and dedication from NASA to send Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin to the moon and back.
