The Preview Show: Arsenal head to Anfield, James Maddison looks sharp and Ian Holloway's got confused Aug 23, 2019
    Show notes

We’re here to ease you into another lovely weekend of football with The Preview Show, sponsored by Betway!

After finding out it’ll take seven insipid years to get used to VAR, as well as Ian Holloway’s confused take on international diplomacy, we turn our attention to the weekend’s fixtures. Arsenal take on Liverpool in what should be another thigh-rubber as Dani Ceballos and his merry men will be hoping to get one over Klopp’s Clan. We also discuss West Ham’s trip to Watford—which will no doubt result in a very intriguing match, what with West Ham’s poor start and Watford’s terrible one.

We also squeeze in some chat on Sheffield vs Leicester and try to improve on our dismal record in Betway’s 4 To Score feature.

On The Continent: Maurizio Sarri's transfer troubles, Lyon start strong, and Franck flies to Florence Aug 22, 2019
    Show notes

James Horncastle’s back in one of our continental hot seats and he’s packed some Serie A chat in his hand luggage! We start by talking about Juventus, as Sarri begins his reign in Turin. With the transfer window closing soon, their squad still looks a bit bloated— James discusses how they might be able to offload some of their fringe players as Sarri looks to streamline the team. We also discuss Franck Ribéry’s lovely move to Fiorentina and how they might get on under new coach Vincenzo Montella.

We then head to France as Andy’s faves Lyon have got off to a great start (against admittedly poor opposition). Plus, there’s talk on Zinedine Zidane’s difficult task at the helm of Real Madrid and Thierry Henry sticking his cultured boot in.

Ramble Meets... Alan Curbishley Aug 21, 2019
    Show notes

Alan Curbishley has managed over 700 games at Premier League and Championship level, making him still, after eight years out of the game, one of the top ten most experienced managers in top flight football.

Here in this exclusive and revealing interview with Football Ramble Daily, he talks us through his career from the highs of achieving promotion to the Premier League in dramatic fashion with Charlton Athletic to the lows of his contentious exit from West Ham while still at the peak of his powers, as well as how close he came to the England job in 2006, and why Thierry Henry still brings him out in a nervous sweat.

Jules & Andy: Questions around Chelsea, Championship stars in the Premier League, and Sol Campbell's exit Aug 20, 2019
    Show notes

We’re back to take a deep dive into the biggest stories from another hectic weekend of football. We begin with a thorough look at Frank Lampard’s Chelsea after a promising but inconsistent draw with Leicester— will we see a return to the unease that plagued much of last season?

Then we take a look at some of the players who have come up from the Championship as they look to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Teemu Pukki has taken the bull by the horns after his hat-trick against Newcastle, while Southampton’s new star Che Adams hasn’t enjoyed as successful a start. We also look at Sol Campbell’s recent exit from Macclesfield after he excelled last season despite the constraints of ‘the worst job in the football league.’

The Ramble: Yet more VAR, Pukki the poacher, and a sexy Pards Aug 19, 2019
    Show notes

Time for a new episode of The Ramble, fresh out of the oven! We begin with the inevitable chat about VAR in City’s game against Spurs, but also take the time to acknowledge Kevin De Bruyne and Érik Lamela looking back to their imperious best as well as Pep's wild gesticulating.

Elsewhere, we try and unravel that dismal Newcastle performance at Norwich as Teemu Pukki grabbed a glorious hat-trick. And Marcus tells us about his trip to the Emirates with Camerman Sam to watch Dani Ceballos and David Luiz have a lovely old time.

Oh, and with no apology, we get a glimpse into the mind of a horny Alan Pardew. It's just the service we aim to provide.

    The Blizzard: Brazil 1-2 Norway, 1998 Aug 17, 2019
    Show notes

For the latest episode of Greatest Games, in association with the Blizzard, we’re off to the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille with Norwegian writer Lars Sivertsen. He talks us through the 1998 World Cup group game between Norway and reigning world champions Brazil, where two late goals from his unfancied home nation beat an XI featuring Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Dunga and Roberto Carlos.

Lars discusses a risk-averse but hugely talented Norwegian side who, after disappointing results against Scotland and Morocco, had to win to secure their qualification from the group. After an 83rd minute equaliser from imposing striker Tore André Flo, Kjetil Rekdal struck the game-winning penalty in the final minutes— “with the lowest heart rate of any Norwegian.”

    Show notes

We’re back in our Cristiano Ronaldo pants and ready for some weekend footy— let’s hope Jurgen’s washed his pair after all last night’s penalty shoot out excitement! We discuss that Super Cup win for Liverpool and look ahead to their next game against Southampton this weekend.

Then, we turn our attention to the thigh-rubber of the weekend: Manchester City v Tottenham. Expect tactical fouls aplenty as you sit down to watch this one with your Saturday afternoon tea. We also squeeze in some chat on Arsenal hosting Burnley and Newcastle’s trip to new boys Norwich.

There's also a parachuting Santa and Adil Rami gets himself in all sorts of bother.

We get stuck into the recent Champions League qualifiers, as Ajax battle through two tough legs against PAOK. Jules & Andy: Impressive debutants, promoted sides’ endeavour, and a momentous UEFA Super Cup Aug 13, 2019
    Show notes

The Premier League got off to a flyer and we’re here to dissect the biggest stories from the weekend. We begin by discussing some of the impressive debuts across the league, including Harry Maguire’s imperious performance for Manchester United and Tanguy Ndombele’s classy turnout for Tottenham. Then we turn to the newly promoted sides as Norwich and Sheffield United resolutely stuck to their respective styles of play that secured promotion last year. Is this a developing trend that will continue throughout this Premier League season?

Finally we look ahead to tomorrow’s UEFA Super Cup and Stéphanie Frappart, as she makes history as the first woman to officiate a final of a men’s UEFA competition. Jules reflects on how this is a hugely encouraging sign for young women seeking professional opportunities in football.
