The Ramble: Jubilation for Norwich, Chelsea’s youngsters impress, and Arsenal revert to type Sep 16, 2019
    Show notes

    In Daniel Farke’s voice:

“A pleasing weekend of football in which many of the topics were covered, such as Norwich City’s win over Manchester City which was perhaps not expected, Liverpool asserting their sporting superiority over the struggling Newcastle United and Arsenal showing much quality in the first half of their game with Watford and then perhaps letting themselves down in the second.

There is also much discussion of the parting of the Red Sea, which is slightly off of the topics, there is some controversy regarding the designated email section of the podcast and some perhaps unnecessary discussion of dog boobs.”

    The Blizzard: Peru 4-2 Austria, 1936 Sep 14, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, sees us travel back to the 1936 German Olympics. Journalist and sports writer David Owen joins us to discuss the chaotic quarter-final between Peru and Austria.

The game was played against a backdrop of Nazi rule and propaganda in front of a fairly empty Stadion am Gesundbrunnen. These were two sides with contrasting fortunes throughout the 1930’s; Peru were beginning an impressive run of form that culminated in a victory at the 1939 Copa América, while Austria had begun a stark decline. Despite the sides’ lowly reputation, the match and extended aftermath were utterly bizarre. Join us as David, Jonathan and Marcus discuss a tumultuous affair involving a pitch invasion, three disallowed goals and a rescheduled game.

    The Blizzard: Ajax 2-0 Panathinaikos, 1971 Sep 07, 2019
    Show notes

For today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by another member of the Football Ramble Daily parish: Andy Brassell! He’s here to discuss the 1971 European Cup final, where Rinus Michels’ imperious Ajax side took on Ferenc Puskás’ Panathinaikos.

Ferenc Puskás’ return to Wembley - eighteen years after his miraculous display in Hungary’s 6-3 hiding of England - was most significant achievement in his coaching career. He led an unfancied but hugely talented Panathinaikos side past Everton and Red Star Belgrade in the latter stages of the competition to the final, against one of the most significant teams in football history. Captained by Velibor Vasović and featuring a Johan Cruyff at the peak of his powers, this era-defining Ajax side went on to enjoy huge success with their Total Football philosophy, and this final may well have been the sliding doors moment at the beginning of it all.

We discuss the match itself, the political landscape surrounding Panathinaikos at the time and this pivotal moment in Dutch football history, which Jonathan sums up via a splendid gardening metaphor!

The Preview Show: Big games ahead for England, Wales and Scotland Sep 06, 2019
    Show notes

It’s the first international break of the season and we have a look at the most important contest of the week, which is of course Michael Owen vs Alan Shearer. Where the hell did that come from? Let’s see how this fascinating story develops.

As well as minor things such as the Euro 2020 qualifiers we learn how to keep tabs on various Peters, flying footwear and the spotting of a Ramble favourite in the wild…

Meanwhile, Luke inexplicably forgets about the very existence of Alan Hutton.
