FRD Book Club: Soccernomics, Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski May 31, 2020
    Show notes

We’re here to supply with you with the tools to win any football argument on today’s episode of FRD’s Book Club, as we take a look at Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski’s ‘Soccernomics’!

This project has taken on a life of its own since it was first published in 2009; the book and its data-driven analysis are continually updated in subsequent editions, with some theories proven and others revised within the context of the modern game. Kate Mason, Andy Brassell and Luke Moore pull their respective editions from their shelves and sit down to discuss some of the entertaining anecdotes from the book and the wider discussion around statistics’ place in football discourse – and we also hear from Simon Kuper himself about the process involved in continually updating what may prove to be a life’s work.

    The Blizzard: Barnsley 2-4 Ipswich, 2000 May 30, 2020
    Show notes

This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of the fantastic First Division play-off Final that’s the subject of today’s Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Geneticist, author and broadcaster Adam Rutherford joins us to discuss Barnsley 2-4 Ipswich, the last club game at the old Wembley!

After Ipswich were knocked out in the three previous play-off semi-finals, they arrived at a Wembley on the back of a 7-5 aggregate win over Bolton in the semi-finals. They must’ve worried misfortune would strike again after just six minutes into the final, as a Richard Wright own goal put Barnsley ahead. But, on the back of some classy technical operators that had impressed all season, Ipswich pulled it back, with Adam and all his family cheering on in the sunshine.

Ramble Meets... Danny Murphy (Part 2) May 27, 2020
    Show notes

We’re back with the second part of our extended Ramble Meets… interview with former Liverpool, Fulham and England midfielder Danny Murphy! On today’s episode, we rejoin Danny’s story when he left Charlton and joined Martin Jol’s Tottenham.

Danny talks to Luke about how the initial differences with Jol gave way to problems in his family life that ultimately hampered his career in North London. He then swapped North for West, joining Fulham, and they reminisce about the club's journey to reach the 2009/10 Europa League final under Roy Hodgson. They also discuss what it’s like challenging a manager whose philosophy isn’t working, wonder whether he could have achieved more and remember Clint Dempsey’s unbelievable reaction to being told he’d been dropped on the day of that Europa League final.

Jules & Andy: The psychological strain on professional players, and updates from the Football league & WSL May 26, 2020
    Show notes

Your favourite duo on Football Ramble Daily are back with a brand new episode, as we get stuck into the latest news during these unprecedented times.

We begin by speaking to psychiatrist Dr. Tim Rogers, who counts a number of professional footballers among his clients, about the mental strain professional players are currently under and their worries around future finances and employment. We then discuss some updates from the Football League, where many smaller clubs are in a precarious financial state as they try to finalise plans for the rest of their seasons. We also look back on some of our favourite moments from the WSL season - which was curtailed this week - and discuss the clubs' hopes for if/how standings may be finalised.

We'd love to here from you in these unprecedented, chaotic times - email us: julesandandy@footballrambledaily.com or tweet us @JulesBreach @AndyBrassell @FootballRamble

The Ramble: Bad defending in Germany, Premier League training and Djibril Cisse’s mathematical mission May 25, 2020
    Show notes

The Bundesliga continues to deliver, with positive results for all of our beloved teams - Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Koln - as well as big wins for Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Such merciful release.

Back in rumourland Mauricio Pochettino is making it clear that he’d be happy to manage in the Premier League again and those Rafa Benitez to Newcastle rumours just aren’t going away.

Elsewhere we saw many pleasing examples of footballers with lockdown hair, there’s some confusing talk about kestrels and we review Goal 3. Oh. Goal 3. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

At The Match Revisited: Sunderland 3-0 Southend Utd, 2018 May 24, 2020
    Show notes

As domestic football's return gradually takes shape, we're taking a look back at some of our favourite episodes of At The Match from the last few seasons, where Andy Brassell samples some of the best football atmospheres around.

On today's episode, fellow Football Ramble Daily host Jonathan Wilson joins Andy as he heads north for a chilly autumnal afternoon Stadium of Light. Andy sits down with David Rose, the FSF’s deputy chief executive and lifelong Sunderland fan, to discuss the improved relationship between the owners and supporters, and what the Red and White Army supporters group are doing in the local community. We also hear from Peter Daykin on why life outside the Premier League isn't as disheartening as one might imagine.

The Blizzard: Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich, 1999 May 23, 2020
    Show notes

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we remember one of the most iconic Champions League finals of the modern era. We’re joined by celebrated commentator Clive Tyldesley, who was in the gantry for the game at the Camp Nou, to discuss the 1999 Champions League final!

Manchester United’s victory over Bayern Munich ended English football's long wait since their last continental triumph. It also sealed the treble for United that, rather than through imperious dominance, was won via a series of ridiculous comebacks across the season. Bayern themselves produced a remarkable comeback in their semi-final against Dynamo Kyiv and, with five minutes to go, looked to have written their name on the trophy. Clive joins us to discuss his experience of commentating on this iconic match where, with the introduction of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and the pressure building, the seemingly inevitable happened.
