We're in a celebratory mood on today's episode, as La Liga returns tonight with another edition of El Gran Derbi between Sevilla and Real Betis. We also discuss Ligue 1's hastiness to cancel their season, a disturbing attack on Benfica's bus and what's next for Mario Balotelli, after his disappointing homecoming in Brescia looks likely to come to an end.

You can listen to episodes of the Mailbag, where Andy and Marcus Speller answer your European football questions, exclusively on Patreon! Sign up at patreon.com/footballrambledaily and send your questions to: otc@footballrambledaily.com.

    Fantasy Five-a-Side: Nick Bright Jun 10, 2020
    Show notes

In all honestly, the dream line-up for this week’s episode of Fantasy Five-a-Side might be the hardest, most unforgiving bunch of tyrants you could ever assemble.

Nick Bright, DJ on BBC 1Xtra and 5 Live, joins Jim Campbell to talk him through a five-a-side squad that would strike fear into any opposition at your local Powerleague. It features an otherwise stoic goalkeeper - who became a rampant madman on the pitch - a couple of beautifully graceful thugs from the continent and, thankfully, an affable Arsenal legend up top.

Jules & Andy: Lingering questions around Project Restart, and football's fight for equality Jun 09, 2020
    Show notes

With the Premier League’s return just over a week away, we discuss the final moving pieces of Project Restart on today’s episode of Jules & Andy!

We acknowledge some of the questions that still need answers, including clubs deciding what to do with their fans’ season ticket money and how players will manage any injury worries after their prolonged break. We also discuss Raheem Sterling’s interview on BBC’s Newsnight where he stressed the need for black and minority ethnic players to be represented n the higher echelons of football, from the dugout to the boardroom.

We'd love to here from you in these unprecedented, chaotic times - email us: julesandandy@footballrambledaily.com or tweet us @JulesBreach @AndyBrassell @FootballRamble

The Ramble: Celebration Cam, a Champions League mini-tournament and the inspirational Brendan Rodgers Jun 08, 2020
    Show notes

How we’ve missed Brendan Rodgers. With the Premier League’s return just around the corner he’s talking about “emotionally activating” his players and taking inspiration from Phil Jackson of The Last Dance. Yes. Yeeeeees. This is what we want, and it’s all so close.

The Premier League have also discussed setting up a Celebration Cam - a camera for players to celebrate into - which is why they get paid the big bucks, while in the Bundesliga we got our first taste of artificial crowd noise and frankly the jury is out.

We also found time to chat Pro Evolution Soccer, marvel at Multipurpose Steve Harper and indulge Pete’s dog borrowing plans, as well as his interminable film club.

At The Match Revisited: Dortmund 2-0 Freiburg, 2018 Jun 07, 2020
    Show notes

With football across the continent gradually returning, we've been using its absence to look back over some of our favourite episodes of At The Match. Join Andy Brassell as he immerses himself in some of football's best atmospheres, speaking to those closest to the club in the stands and the boardroom.

With the Bundesliga taking centre stage in recent weeks, today's retrospective episode takes us to Westfalenstadion, home of Borussia Dortmund, to sample perhaps the best atmosphere around. Andy speaks to Jens Weber of schwatzgelb.de about the international attraction of BVB and how that's received by the fans, just why Jürgen Klopp was made for the club and the unity between rival fans against the authorities' plans to encroach on their matchday experience.

Which episodes of At The Match do you want us to revisit? Let us know on Twitter: @FootballRamble & @andybrassell.

    The Blizzard: Bologna 2-0 Inter, 1964 Jun 06, 2020
    Show notes

We’re looking back at one of the most infamous seasons in Serie A history on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Writer and musician Dan Carney joins us to discuss the 1964 title-deciding playoff between Inter and Bologna!

Nobody would have expected Bologna to be challenging for the Serie A title at the start of the 1963/64 season, since their previous title came in 1941, while Helenio Herrera’s famous Grande Inter side was among the favourites. What followed was an era-defining Serie A title race, featuring drug scandals and points deductions, that ended in Inter and Bologna finishing on the same points. There was only one thing for it: a championship tie-breaker at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico!

The Preview Show: Roy Hodgson defends modern players, the restart gets nearer and Timo Werner to Chelsea? Jun 05, 2020
    Show notes

While chaos has unfolded around us Chelsea have quietly gone about getting some impressive business done, with Timo Werner seemingly on the way, leading us to ask the question; just how handsome is he?

As the Premier League nears a return Southampton have looked at Ralph Hasenhuttl and decided “more of that please”, Roy Hodgson has been praising modern footballers and their responses to the current political situation, while Mike Ashley continues to be a silly sausage.

Away from all that serious nonsense Marcus introduces us to his Fulham hooligan firm and a trip down the Time Tunnel reminds us of Steve Kean’s not-actually-that-brief reign of terror at Blackburn Rovers. Simpler, if still very weird times.

On The Continent: Numerous Bundesliga protests and football returns to Portugal Jun 04, 2020
    Show notes

We’ve got all your continental queries covered on today's episode of On The Continent, as Luke Moore and Andy Brassell guide you through the biggest stories in European football.

We begin with the protests by the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Thuram and Achraf Hakimi around the killing of George Floyd and the wider Black Lives Matter movement. As football’s governing bodies vocalise their support for the protests, we wonder whether this is a tipping point for players’ social activism and football publicising wider social issues.

There’s also plenty of on-pitch action to get stuck into, as Portugal’s Primeira Liga has started up again! We discuss league leaders Porto’s transfer plans and their shock loss to Famalicão, as well as the latest updates from Spain and Italy regarding their return.

Fancy getting in touch? We are now releasing episodes of the Mailbag exclusively to Patreon! Email us at otc@footballrambledaily.com and visit patreon.com/footballrambledaily to get involved!

Jules & Andy: The Championship gets a return date, and players' social activism Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

With Jules unwell this week, Andy Brassell welcomes fellow Football Ramble Daily host Marcus Speller, along with a couple of great guests, to today's episode of Jules & Andy!

With the EFL setting a return date for the Championship, many clubs have raised concerns about the lack of preparation time and dialogue between themselves and the league. We welcome TalkSPORT's EFL commentator, Ian Danter, to the show to discuss the league's international appeal and what reassurances clubs across the league are asking for.

Then, with various players voicing their support for the family of George Floyd and the wider Black Lives Matter movement, we speak to The Independent's Melissa Reddy about Jadon Sancho's display of activism after his debut hat-trick and why younger players across Europe are far more engaged in highlighting social issues than their predecessors.
