    150th Episode Guestless Spectacular Jun 23, 2015
    Show notes

Ep. 150 - For our 150th episode we decide to do a little something different... so instead of talking food with a musician or music with a chef we gathered up all of our guest hosts to shoot the shit about food and music. Tall Tales + The Stew podcast host Jason Stewart (aka DJ Themjeans), Thrillist's Jeff Miller and Producer Chuck P all join Zach over danish. Among the topics discussed are:
Zach's trip to Santa Clara this weekend to see The Grateful Dead and scour the parking lot for fatty egg rolls
Alma Restaurant announcing a new crowd funding campaign and what it all means for them and the restaurant business itself
What Jason thought of Fuku in New York (David Chang's new fried chicken spot)
And Thrillist's recent list of 50 Things You Have to Eat in L.A. Before you Die
And then at the end, we introduce a new feature called "Worst Food Blogger of the Week" where Zach vents about something online that really pissed him off.
Let us know what you think of the guestless format by tweeting us @foodisnewrock. If you like it, we'll do of more of these shows!

We talk first album, first concert, and a dinner he did with John Cale. Plus he tells about how his restaurants Big Star and Nico Osteria are both named after musicians.

    Show notes

Ep. 148 - AJ and Dak from L.A. indie pop band Saint Motel are this week's guests. We talk to Dak about his days as a sushi chef, and AJ give us his picks for best restauants in L.A. and on the road.

    Show notes

Ep. 147 - Our podcast guest this week is Philadelphia Chef Marc Vetri, owner of the Vetri Family of restaurants and the guy who Tom Colicchio called the best chef guitarist he knows. We talk about the bands he was in before becoming a chef, the music and food series he does with musician Phil Roy, and his new cookbook "Mastering Pasta".

    The Wombats May 26, 2015
    Show notes

Ep. 146 - Murph from the UK band The Wombats joins us on the show this week to talk food. He tells us about the time the band made pate on Sunday Brunch w/ the Saturdays, how one of the tracks on their new album features a drum loop made from a burp, and the time his dog got into the fridge and ate everything. And then at the very end, Sam joins the podcast to tell us what barnacles taste like.

Big Gay Ice Cream Truck Returns May 19, 2015
    Show notes

Ep. 145 - Doug Quint and Bryan Petroff from the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck return to the podcast this week. We talk to them about last week's podcast guest Stephen Merritt (from the Magnetic Fields), jerking off bulls, and some of the various easter eggs that can be found in their new cookbook "Big Gay Ice Cream: Saucy Stories & Frozen Treats". Plus Doug talks shit about "Zephyros Winds", the chamber quintet that replaced him without telling him shortly after the ice cream truck took off.

The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt May 12, 2015
    Show notes

Ep. 144 - On this week's podcast Zach meets up with Stephen Merritt (and Sam Davol) from the Magnetic Fields at Doomie's, a vegan restaurant in Hollywood, CA. Over vegan fried chicken and ham and cheese croissants they talk about Stephin's friendship with Doug Quint from the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, why he became Vegan, and how much better it's gotten over the years for touring musicians who don't eat meat (and he makes it clear it has nothing to do with the hummus.) Plus Stephin teaches us about the vomit fruit al, which is also one of the subjects of his new Scrabble inspired book of mnemonic poems, "101 Two Letter Words". We were warned that Stephin is a notoriously interesting interviewee and to be ready for awkward pauses. He didn't disappoint.

    Marc Canter May 05, 2015
    Show notes

Ep. 143 - Guns N Roses might not be the topic you'd expect us to spend over an hour talking about with the owner of Canter's, the famous Jewish deli in L.A.'s Fairfax district. But that's exactly what we did w/ Marc Canter last week, who not only grew up with Slash but has documented practically his entire career. He was there when Guns N Roses was formed, and his book "Reckless Road" is full of stories and pictures from that time. Recently he was the subject of an Uproxx documentary about G'nR, prompting us to sit down with the 3rd generation deli owner. We talk Guns N Roses, the Sunset Strip, and (of course) pastrami.

    Christina Tosi Apr 28, 2015
    Show notes

Ep. 142 - Momofuku Milk Bar chef Christina Tosi is this week's podcast guest. Zach welcomed her to our Bronson Island studio, where they exchanged sweets and then talked about their mutual love of R. Kelly. Christina also talked about her childhood cassette collection, her Dad's hatred of the Beach Boys, and her completely shocking very first concert- which we won't ruin by telling you about here. We then asked her what it's like working with David Chang, and hatched a plan to make Questlove the cereal milk of his dreams (don't tell him about it.)
Christina Tosi's new cookbook "Milk Bar Life" is out now.

    Jenn Louis Apr 21, 2015
    Show notes

Ep. 141 - Chef Jenn Louis from Lincoln in Portland, OR is this week's podcast guest. She has a brand new cookbook out called "Pasta By Hand", so we sat down with her when she was in town for the L.A. Chef Classic last month. Jenn told us about how she became a drummer, her friendship with M. Ward, and what it was like to sing along with the Von Trapp family at a cookie party for Food & Wine Magazine.
