Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley

Finding the Throughline: Conversations about the Creative Process invites you into the minds of writers and other creatives as they open up about their process, their doubts, and what kinds of changes they’re thinking about making. The questions are mildly invasive, honestly, and the answers are unvarnished…and so refreshing!
Whether your creative work is writing, painting, making music, parenting, or simply living, Finding the Throughline can help you get—and stay—inspired. Invigorated, even.
For detailed show notes on each interview, visit katehanley.substack.com. And if you’d like to hear these interviews in one ad-free episode (as opposed to broken up into three shorter episodes with a few ads sprinkled in to keep the lights on), become a paid subscriber once you’re there.

Today’s quick hit is to look people in the eye. This may seem like no big deal, or like it doesn’t have anything to do with being a better person, but listen in for how much it matters.

[Current Obsessions]: The Goodwill Find That Makes the Perfect Morning Beverage, Ep. 804 Sep 28, 2022
    Show notes

Why is it that your first cup of coffee or tea is so perfect that you want another one, but the second one is never as good?

I’m a tea drinker and I was plagued by trying to find a way to have the right amount of tea at the right strength and temperature. I mean, it’s the little things, right? And then I took my thrift-loving daughter to Goodwill one day and occupied myself by lookin at the household items aisle. And that’s when I saw them. One of my current obsessions – a big ass mug.

With a bonus beverage I’m also currently telling everyone I know about–a low-carb beer alternative.

    Show notes

Are you always on the lookout for things that will help you sleep more–especially ones that don’t require a prescription, aren’t habit forming, and don’t make you wake up feeling groggy? Me too. And I recently found one that works so well, I’m completely obsessed with it. (Hint: It’s a supplement, but it’s not a pill!)

[Current Obsessions]: The Streaming Show That’s Giving Me Life, Ep. 802 Sep 26, 2022
    Show notes

This week, I’m doing something new–sharing the handful of things right now that I am loving so much that I find myself talking about them with friends and family. So I figured, why not share them with you, too?

Today’s current obsession is a show–but it’s not any show. It’s a show that models body acceptance and celebrates bodies of all sizes. I’ve been watching it with my daughter and I can feel it helping both of us love our bodies more. I mean, not bad for a little Amazon Prime and chill, right?

[Time]: How Can I Stop Frittering Away a Whole Day?, Ep. 801 Sep 23, 2022
    Show notes

We’ve all been there–we had the whole day open to do as we pleased, and we had all these things we wanted to get done, but by the time 5 oclock rolls around, we haven’t done squat.

Today’s episode is about how to avoid frittering away the day.

And today’s episode is inspired by a listener question. Hooray!

If you have a question or quandary you’d like me to address on a future episode, email me at kate@katehanley.com. Bonus points for recording a voice memo and attaching it to your email (we can totally keep you anonymous if you like).

[Time]: Weed Out Annoying Time Sucks, Ep. 800 Sep 22, 2022

The dumb little things you have to do repeatedly can eat up your time and drag your energy down. Since this week is all about ways to take better care of the intersection of time, energy, and happiness, finding solutions for these minor aggravations is the subject of today’s episode.

I don’t know about you, but I find teeny little changes ridiculously exciting, which means I’m ridiculously excited about this episode.

[Time]: Make Time for Happiness, Ep. 799 Sep 21, 2022
    Show notes

Today I’m talking with Dr. Cassie Holmes, professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, social psychologist who researches the intersection of time and happiness, and who teaches a wildly popular MBA class on how to change the way you think about time in order to boost happiness. She generously shares her evidence-based strategies for changing your approach to time and making more space for the things that really matter to you. I love this episode!!

[Time]: Switch Your Squeeze, Ep. 798 Sep 20, 2022
    Show notes

When you’re cracking open your planner, or opening up your digital calendar (I use both)--here’s what we tend to do: put in the things we have to do first. Things like commute, work, have this meeting or this appointment. And then we try to squeeze in everything else around it–things like, do something with friends, exercise, read, do our hobbies. All those things make us who we are and add enjoyment to our days and richness to our lives.

I say, let’s switch that whole approach around. Make space for the things you WANT to do, FIRST, and then squeeze in all the things you have to do around it.

It’s the equivalent of the financial advice to pay yourself first–take the time you need for yourself right off the top, and then everything else will sort itself into the spaces that are left.
